5  Psychosis TIREDNESS! Lethargy, erection that lasted hours at night, apathy, unable to wake up in the morning so sleepiness, a hungover feeling in the morning, couldn't shave and bathe in the morning Tell your doctor that you are depressed if you take risperidone and feel that it is working but also exacerbating your depression. Your doctor will most probably give you an SSRI like Fluoxetine to counter the tiredness and depression. Fluoxetine helped me a great deal with the tiredness and flashbacks. I just wish my doctor could have given me Fluoxetine in the beginning itself! M 29 2.5 years

5  Psychosis Tiredness, lack of motivation, avolition, anhedonia, loss of creativity, lethargy/laziness, helpless, hard to think about a chore and then do it, weak I will be honest. Risperidone removed my hallucinations and delusions completely. I have been on it for more than two years and I am feeling much better than I was before. However, I am also feeling inactive, lethargic and lazy. I am unable to access that part of my brain which pushes me to be active, to do things (especially chores) and to be more happy. While it is has been extremely effective in removing even auditory hallucinations, I have become a statue. I just cannot get myself to move around the house in the way that I did when I was not on it. I am not creative anymore. I do not have those motivational feelings which made me go out for walks and to exercise. And when I try being active I feel pain. I am not able to help my mother in the house too. Once, when I told my shrink about these side effects she said that I should take “baby steps” and whatnot. I would like to see the professional psychiatric establishment take this powerful drug. I am told to be strong, but how can I be strong when I have no access to a part of my brain? I feel helpless. M 29 2 years

5  Son 10 years/ Autism, Self Injury "Weight Gain!" It was very welcomed and needed because of food adversions and he was very thin. Dry Mouth. Sometimes drooled or had a pocket of saliva in his mouth that ran out. This may have been a Behavior? One sad thing is a person can top out of the drug amounts and I tried a few add on Medications but nothing worked as well so take the strength slow and once a good place is found stay there for as long as possible before upping the dosage! There is a limit to the amount allowed to use and then an add-on has to be added. I know there are always new drugs to try but who wants to keep trying different ones and wasting time with an unhappy autistic child? Risperdal changed our lives in a positive way with our autistic son who was self injurious, aggressive, has food adversions, hid under under tables or blankets, and didn't make eye contact with teachers or therapists. After a few months of taking only Risperdal liquid he broke out of his shell/ became aware and began to learn! Aggression stopped! He still scratched himself but not bloody! His school noticed the possitive change and other parents asked me what he was taking because the changes were so noticable. M 15 7 years

5  Bipolar Weight gain, craving of sugar and carbs. Sleepy. This med gave me my life back. I started out on .25mg about 15 years ago and I helped me sleep well. It helps my mood far more than my prozac 20mg. Keeps me stable. I have tried most of the usual bipolar meds but always came back to this one. F 50 15 years

5  Bipolar affective disorder I started with injection of 50mg every fortnight, now orally I'm down to 1mg of risperdal per night. At the start of 50mg I gained a lot of weight nearly excess of 20kgs. I slept about 13 hrs per day. Gradually lowered my dose and I made healthier food choices and joined the gym. Low dose of 1mg has helped my mind to not be cognitively slow. I've lost 15 kilos and am mentally well and stable and look like my old self again. I find you have to help yourself help yourself. In my experience adopting a healthier and more active lifestyle does wonders and I also feed myself spiritually too. But everyone is different with different circumstances. F 33 3 years

5  Schizoeffective disorder this medication can give me all the downsides that's mentioned by all the other patients, but why am I saying it's great? Because if it's eliminating all your manic and hallucinations and delusions then it's up to you to battle the weight gain, and anxiety, and sleeping long hours, and aggressiveness and thinking suicidal, how? I've been to hospital nearly 6 times and that's because I've stopped my medication or when I was put on consta I stopped taking the injection suddenly because I thought I was fine because I had battled all the downsides, sorry I didn't get down to how? I'll explain. Firstly I don't smoke, I don't drink, I don't gamble, I go for long walks pushing myself at fast pace to get my dopamine Levels high so that takes the place of smoking and I have a sleeping pattern I sleep 8 hours during the night even though I have the urge to sleep more and nap during the day for about an hour I read books and I work hard in battling this illness everyday to learn about my illness and work hard to keep myself from overeating because the medicine gives you appetite but it's up To you to control how much you eat and what you eat, and for being aggressive, you need to be a zombie so you need that sleep to keep yourself from being aaggressive and the naps and suicide you have to again be a zombie again to eliminate that thoughts until you control it. Conclusion you need to get out there in 3 ways, spiritually you need to have a connection with God, you need to learn as much knowledge about the illness you have and what's the right led and thitdly stop winging And get out there and go for long walks so you get your dopamine levels high specially if your feeling low or out of energy or too overweight.  5  Bipolar II Lactating, weight gain (although I gained at 13 years old have since lost the weight), vivid dreams My doctor has been surprised that I can be on Risperdal on a very low dose - 1mg once a day. He says I qualify for Abilify because of lactating (since I was 13) but I like Risperdal, I know what to expect and it works. I don't mind lactating and the weight gain is now weight loss - since I work out 5days a week. I have taken numerous drugs - trying new ones when they come out but always go back to Risperdal. It just works. I'm able to function although I have periods where I can barely get out of bed and I'm completely irrational when I'm angry. Usually I go into a depression mode twice a year - my anger stages are rare and may last for about 2 hours. Depression stages last all winter ( doesn't help that I live in NJ - might be better if I move to FL for the lovely yearly weather). So that might last about 5 months. I try to work out more and do activities to help keep me going strong, but I usually just want to stay home. F 27 13 years

5  Bipolar I Seem to be holding water weight, but have gained 5 lbs. I'm on weight watchers and keep to my points so it's hard to see the 5 lbs. Abilify combined with Zoloft gave the unpleasant side effect of sweating profusely. Zoloft by itself didn't do it, but the psychiatrist said Zoloft would be the culprit and for some reason the combination of Abilify and Zoloft caused awful sweating. At night I'd sleep with towels, not sheets. I couldn't stand it any longer and was switched to Risperdal. I like it so far. I take it at night and sleep well. Some perspiration, but nothing like it was on Abilify. I started at 0.5mg and was increased to 1mg at night. It hasn't affected my sex drive in a negative way. F 41 4 weeks

5  OCD and Depression Low sex drive, mild fatigue This medication has done wonders for me with minimal side effects. I take a low dose along with Paxil and have seen a dramatic reduction in obsessive thoughts, dalusions and anger. It's not a cure-all.  5  Mood disorder NOS lower libido, tiredness, lack of motivation It definitely got rid of my obsessive thinking, also stabilized my mood, as I was having bouts similar to bipolar (but not as severe). At this point I think it is worth the side effects I've experienced, however I do want to try and get to a lower dosage out of fear of possible long-term, serious side effects. M 34 3 years
