LOVENOX (PRESERVATIVE FREE)  (ENOXAPARIN SODIUM):  Enoxaparin is used to prevent and treat harmful blood clots. This helps to reduce the risk of a stroke or heart attack. This medication helps keep your blood flowing smoothly by lowering the activity of clotting proteins in the blood. Enoxaparin is an anticoagulant, also known as a "blood thinner." It is a type of heparin. Conditions which increase your risk of developing blood clots include certain types of surgeries (such as knee/hip replacement, abdominal), long periods of being immobile, certain types of heart attack, and a specific type of chest pain called unstable angina. For some medical conditions, enoxaparin may be used in combination with other "blood thinners."   FDA Approval Date: 2000-06-02 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Factor V Leiden, PE right lung tiny bruises around injection site, constant diarrhea, HEADACHES that seem to never go away, burning/stinging after medicine is injected, hot/cold flashes, an itch as the medicine moves through my body, mood swings, fatigue, skin is very sensitive. i went to the ER complaining of chest pains and difficulty breathing. once tested (xray, ekg, cat scan) they diagnosed me with a pulmonary embolism. they assured me it was treatable and that we had caught it in time. they told me if i had waited 2 more days, i would have died. at 17, thats a scary thought. so i have been on lovenox shots for almost 1 month and i do not enjoy the injections, but i dont really mind them. they are tiny needles and dont really cause that much pain.  4  blood clots due to APS bruising, hard lumps, I had a blood clot in my artery behind my knee in my right leg. Dr. removed it and put me on Coumidan. About 3 wks later developed blood clot same place. Dr said he was going to take my leg off 2 inches above my knee. I said I wanted a second opinion. Went to Baylor in Dallas. Diagnosed with APS. Dr put me on Lovenox injections every 12 hrs. Took blood clot out and took vein from left leg and placed in right leg...also had to have my big toe amputated, due to lack of circulation. Haven't had ANY problems since. I feel VERY blessed! Feel free to contact me! F 53 7 years

4  Pre-electrical cardioversion Just prior to cardioversion because of my atrial fibrillation, the doctor discovered that my INR was too low, so I received two Lovenox injections in my stomach, quite painful and caused bruising, and then I had to give myself injections afterwards at home, too. Nothing I would ever want to do for long. Had a trans-esophageal echocardiogram prior to the cardioversion and somehow my tongue was traumatized (it looked like I may have badly bitten it somehow, but I was under Twilight anaesthetic) and due to the thinned blood, I bled profusely INTO my tongue and the next day after I got home it looked like a killer whale filling up the whole inside of my mouth (my tongue was black and blue and HUGELY swollen). I went to the ER and the doctor said this was life-threatening, because the swelling tongue could block my airway. However, it stopped short of that. It was a horrible thing to experience, very frightening and prevented me from eating any solid food (there was no room in my mouth I downgraded the score to a 4 because even though it did exactly what it was supposed to do, I definitely didn't like the idea of having to inject myself with it. And it leaves bad bruises, but they do heal. M 61 2 days

4  ENORMOUS DVT IN LEFT LEG/PREGNANCY Help!!! Does anyone get anxious when taking this drug? I don't have tolerance for ignorant people and I'm getting shopping cart rage. When I was on this drug two years ago I felt this way but I wasn’t sure if it was due to giving birth and having the large DVT. Now that I’m on the drug again (so that I can have another child), I’m feeling the same symptoms. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to handle this drug much longer! F 29 3 weeks

4  Factor Five Leiden/pregnancy/PE Fatigue, shortness of breath, tired, headaches that can last days or a few minutes, anxiety, irritability, sweating I got multiple pe's in my right lung in 06. Was on lovenox for a few months after, then switched to coumadin. I preferred the coumadin over the shots, but hated the restrictions on my diet and weekly monitoring. Being on lovenox is great because of the lack of monitoring and diet control. But the pain can be unbearable. I am back on lovenox due to being pregnant and with my belly getting bigger I am freaking out as to where to do it next?!? I tried a different method of injection where you clear out bubble, tighten the skin (with index and thumb) and inject slowly the only pain afterwards was the injection site, unlike many other times having pain from the medication or hematomas etc. So far seems easier to find good spots this way.. hopefully it will continue for the next 5 months that is all I have left to be on this.  4  Post endometrial ablation, prev PE Headache, diarrhea. Low grade fever, probably not related to Lovenox. I now use lovenox when flying over 2 hrs in distance, this is the first time post surgery. I have a protein S deficiency and a PE dx post partum almost 3 yrs ago. Convenient prefilled dispensing which I like compared to sub cutaneous heparin and oral coumadin, both I have done for long periods of time during and after multiple pregnancies. I use ice before doing the shot. All stomach sub cutaneous shots, I also ice afterwards if possible. Bruising minimal at best. I have woken with headaches every day of use and have had several episodes of significant diarrhea, this is the highest dose I have used at .4 vs .3. I removed the air from the chamber before injecting lovenox, but was not clear if this was necessary. Also really liked the no recapping and the needle guard that is easily engaged post shot by following the instructions. Would use this again. Easy to travel with. F 43 5 days

4  DVT and Cancer Fatigue, shortness of breath, and bruising. The side effects are bothersome but this medicine has allowed me to take a medicine for my cancer that I would not have been able to take otherwise. I too also wish this was in pill form. F 48 2 years

4  Factor V Leiden, PE, 3 CVTs Very few bruises but when I do bruise they are very large, a few hard bumps, loose stool, overall weakness/fatigue, burning. To lessen the burn I inject lovenox VERY slowly (if you don't have steady hands don't try it). Sometimes the syringes aren't sharp enough and the skin is hard to puncture. My doctors did not warn me of any of the side effects prior to me starting lovenox, they just said some people have very strong reactions and some people have little to no reactions while on lovenox and never said what possible reactions were. I was taking warfarin but never had a stable INR and developed a PE when my INR was 4.0 so I will most likely be a lovenox lifer. Compared to coumadin/warfarin I prefer lovenox because it does not have the numerous drug interactions, its pregnancy safe and doesn't require as much monitoring. Lovenox can be a much stronger anticoagulant than coumadin and isn't easily reversed if your blood is too thin (i.e You can't just take vitamin K or be given FFP like you can with coumadin if your too thin) . When taking ANY anticoag WATCH FOR SIGNS OF INTERNAL BLEEDING!!! ( Bloody urine, tarry/black stool, vomiting blood, etc.) Anyone wanting to talk PLEASE CONTACT ME. I'm heterozygous for FVL, have another blood clotting related antibody affecting me (they haven't figure out what yet), I've had a PE in my lower right lobe, 3 CVTs (superior sagittal sinus, transverse sinus and sigmoid sinus). Coumadin failed after 8 months and I'm now on lovenox. Please contact me if you want to talk, not only F 21 8 months

4  DVT I developed a DVT in my R lower calf in my sleep during a long haul flight. I was now in Sydney and began with Clexane injections which it's called here Lovenox. It helped getting rid of the pain in my calf immediatly....but I adopted other symptoms which I've never had before. I'm very fit. The symptoms are:- Headaches, tiredness, sleepy, fatigue,a nasty taste in my mouth, shortness of breath, over all not feeling well and sure not feeling like myself, sweats,my body just doesn't want to move(I'm very atheletic) been on this injections HAS made a huge difference to my energy levels. At first I was OK with the injections, it was easier because your doses are correct for your body weight without having to do blood work all the time. The Dr. here in the States have just started me on Coumadin/Warfrin which I'm hoping will make me feel better even though blood work will be required 2x per week then once a week to 10 days.....neither are great but treatment is neccessary. It is very important NOT Clexane/lovenox injectables are painful! The Dr. told me "no big deal it doesn't hurt" or "any side effects" but there is. It burns badly like a bee sting. It's not the injection or the needle part it the fluid that goes in. Let the air out first of your injection(even thought they tell us not to) it helps a lot....pinch the site/fat on your stomach and at 90 degrees injected the site then release the skin once the needle is in slowly push the fluid in. Put compression immediatetly on the site once injection is removed...if you try and walk immediatly it may really hurst even more as you can feel the fluid moving into a certain area depending how close to the hip or belly button you are, give yourself a little time....it's unpleasant! At first I was OK with it but after almost 2 months of shoots everyday my tolenrance has became lower, I have bruising with some of the shoots but usually just a spot where the injection has gone in. I did get once a very bad heamatom F 46 2 months

4  Pregnancy, previous DVT Nausea, loose BM..but that could be from the Pregnancy & prenatal pills. The shots are too bad, I have found that if I don't "rub" the injection site afterwards, that I don't bruise too badly. I gave myself a shot in the leg once and that hurt very badly! I will stick w/ the stomach shots. The needles are very very sharp! F 31 5 months

4  early miscarriages bruising, headaches This has helped the shots be more bearable. 1. Use ICE to numb the area for 5 min prior to shot! (At times I don't even feel the shot and I don't have stinging anymore). 2. Use a tight pinch to inject. 3. Apply PRESSURE for a few minutes after the shot. 4. Put the bandaid on TIGHT. (For some reason this keeps from bruising as much. Also, if I miss the bandaid, I tend to bleed hours later after the shot was given. Hope this helps! F 34 42 weeks

4  prior PE I've been taking it for 12 days now after surgery, have to put shots in my thighs because of hysterectomy, have bruises on some injection sites, have sound in my left ear (knocking), feel wobbly sometimes right after I give myself the shot I take the air out of the shots otherwise it burns too much, needles are very sharp, F 40 21 days

4  DVT/Factor V, Protein C/S defiency Very sore stomach, huge bruises around injection site. But I guess that is worth it when compared to the alternative (another DVT) F 22 14 days

4  DVT and PE I had no problems with the injections, but a week later I am experiencing a rash or hives on my stomach - which is where I gave myself the shots. The rash is very itchy and it almost appears as if I have welts. I am terrified of needles, but I have to say that once I got past the fear, it really wasn't a big deal. The only pain was that the medicine stings for a few minutes. The needles were very sharp. F 47 5 days

4  3 bouts of DVTs & PE Shots are painful, hard spots around my waist, but the stuff works. Because of temperature requirements, I am limited where I can travel with lovenox. M 59 3 years

4  PE left lung & DVTs Chest tightness, difficulty swallowing & breathing, sore stomach, anxiety, depression. I didn't have shortness of breath or chest tightness until I started Lovenox. It also went away when I switched to Coumadin only. I'm thankful I could go home instead of staying in the hospital with Heparin, but I think I was a bit mislead about the potential side effects. A few times I thought I was having a heart attack only to be told by my doctor that it was nothing to worry about. It's a good drug, just know what to expect. M 27 2 weeks
