MACROBID  (NITROFURANTOIN; NITROFURANTOIN, MACROCRYSTALLINE):  This medication is an antibiotic used to treat bladder infections (acute cystitis). It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu). Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can cause it to not work for future infections. This medication should not be used in infants younger than 1 month old (see also Precautions section). This drug should not be used to treat infections outside the bladder (e.g., kidney infections such as pyelonephritis or perinephric abscesses).   FDA Approval Date: 1991-12-24 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  resistant blatter infection extreme weakness, fogginess, depression. I could not function on this drug. Extreme neurological side effects. It was my only option to treatment of the bacteria I had, except shots. I think I would rather have had the shots. This was a scary experience. 100 mg, twice daily. I am a 159# female. 7 days

3  UTI Nausea, aches, and fatigue I was prescribed this after diagnosed with UTI and my doctor said it was safe during pregnancy. I took it after eating a large meal and still felt so nauseated. By day 3 the nausea was still there and I felt horrible. It took everything in me to finish all 14 capsules as I didn't want the infection to go to my kidneys during my pregnancy. 7 days

3  UTI nausea, chills, feeling like I have to throw up, diarrhea I thought I was gonna throw up about 4 hours after taking my first pill. It was awful. The next few days I'd have chills and severe nausea and diarrhea. Symptoms finally went away then came back the last two pills I took. I hope it goes away soon. The only good thing is that is cleared up my UTI. F 7 days
100 MG 2X day

3  Gastritis and possible bladder infection I started to feel extremely hot like I was going to pass out. Dizziness followed behind that. My arm had a small trash and itches, I get extreme fatigue and go into deep sleeps. Heart palpitations and having to pace myself when that comes on. Slight headache and feeling like I'm sweaty with a slight temp.. I do drink lots of fluid and still feel dehydrated. Appetite is sporadic and I feel like I don't get enough good even when I've eaten. I have very few antibiotics I can take. This one I don't like at all. I wouldn't take this one unless I had to and in my case I did. F 7 days

3  UTI None I experienced no side effects after taking this drug, and I am sensitive to sulfa drugs (had a bad reaction to the Bactrim which was first prescribed). I would give it a higher rating, but unfortunately I am having to take a second round of antibiotic (different one) as the Macrobid did not completely eliminate the infection. 7 days

2  probable kidney infection I am allergic to sulfa cross reactive medications. We thought I would be safe with this one. After taking only one dose per day, at day 8 I ended up with a rash on both legs .. that classic allergice reaction and at the emergency room for good measure. Oh well. Not a drug I should again take. F

2  UTI Headache (really bad), nausea, burning rash after 3 days of taking medication. Worked so-so on the UTI. I also took cranberry pills from AZO and bought the cranberry juice w/o sugar (more expensive but works better). Still have the rash and burning on neck/chest after discontinuing medication. 3 days

2  prostatitis due to resistant staph General weakness, fatigue, chills, head ache, and back pain. Were running out of drug options here, as few anti bacterials can penetrate the prostate wall. Macrobid is known to NOT have that quality. My Md suggested we try it anyway because there's not much left to try. The next option is levaquin, which can be much worse in the side effects dept. Unfortunately, I don't think macrobid is doing the job. M 5 days

2   Adding to what I just posted: Forgot to mention that also while taking macrobid, that in addition to the horrible headache, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramping, and rash that I also have something going on with my heart rhythm that's worrisome. I have PVC once and a while but last night they were almost constant for quite a while...almost went to ER. F

2   Just looked up Herxheimer Reaction as recommended by another posting. Herxheimer reaction only states that those are the symptoms for those who are treating their infection with Collidial Silver..not macrobid.

2  Pain I immediatly got an allergic reaction. My feet itched, there was a huge red spot with red spots on it, and my fingers and hands itched. It turns out it is so bad I have to go to the doctor. Do not buy it.You get allergic to it real fast. F 1 days

1  bladder infection After approx 10 pills, I started to experience the chills & severe body aches. I thought I was coming down with the flu. The next day, the symptoms continued. I slept practically all day and could not move my body. I felt as if I was paralyzed! At night I noticed a rash on my my legs, with welts further down on my shins and ankles. The pharmacist told me an allergic reaction should have started earlier, but the nurse at the gyn said sometimes it takes time for the medicine to build up and actually cause an allergic reaction. I have never been allergic to anything, but I guess I am now allergic to Macrobid. I was relieved to see so many other people with the same side effects. I would never take this medicine again, and I don't recommend it to anyone. F 5 days
