LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  prostrate cancer hot flashs and weakness hope it keeps working 67 1 years

4  multifocal breast cancer hot flashes, bone pain, anxiety, very dry skin, dry mouth, dry eyes, injection site inflamation, complete supopression of menstural cycle, difficulty in gait, and a mirad of other symptoms dependent on the time in the shot cycle. The last two shots were the 3 month sort and the symptoms were much worse when compared to the monthly shot. I do not recommend the 11.75 ml shot. Opt for the monthly shot as it is much more tolerable. The doctors do the big shot for convenience...Now I am off the shot my life has returned to a much more normal experience with only slight abdominal symptoms when compared to before the shot. I opted for hormonal intervention rather than the standard chemo offered for my DCIS and invasive breast cancers, stage 2. At 49 I had 2 daughters to raise. Overall it was a better experience than what I witnessed other women go through with chemo. There is no long term heart effects as with Chemo. I recommend this shot on the basis of survival. I wish they had treated me 5 years earlier for the polycystic syndrome, maybe then I could have avoided the cancer assault. Just try to turn it into a chemical Adventure! This shot stopped the terrible menstural syndrom I suffered with for 8 years. 54 3.5 years

5  Endometriosis NIght sweats, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, forgetfulness OK ladies this is my second time taking Lupron within 3 years. After my surgery to remove a ovarian tumor in October 2009 when I went to my post-op appointment is when I was told that I have Endometriosis. I started Lupron right away. The pain was instantly gone and so were my periods. Life was great! Then in September 2011 I went for my annual pap and was discussing with my new GYN that I wanted to get pregnant. I had been preiviosly married for 14 years and never once did I get pregnant. Now I know for sure that the problem was me (my ex cheated and got her pregnant). Now I'm engaged to my childhood friend who is my soulmate and now I want to have a baby with him. So after I had an ultrasound done it was confirmed that I did have another cyst and that he wanted to see how bad my endo was now.(I had pics from my previous surgery). Once my new GYN saw the pics he said he could only imagine how bad it would be since the pics were over 2 years old. Long story short I had surgery in December 2011. all went well. My Endometriosis was like a spider web covering all my reproductive organs. My doctor was sucessful in removing it. Unfortunately I lost my left tube because it is completely blocked and my uterus was attached to my abdominal wall. He detached my uterus and left it in. I am going for my final shot in this round tomorrow. this will be number 12 that I've taken since 2009.Next friday 6/29/12 I will be discussing what my next step will be to try to become pregnant.  5  Fibroid tumors Hot flahes, weight gain, Not sure about headaches I've always had them, but now I have them in my sleep. Saved my job..changed my schedule at work and I now have to be there. I would have lost my job if I had not received that shot. This is March,12 I had my last period March,11 and I could not move. Bleed for 36 hours straight!! OMG what a nightmare. I had just come off of lupron for the second time. I didn't know I could not stop getting the shot since it says 6 months. Figure it didn't work the 1st time, so i got it again. Behind that nightmare 1 year ago. I have not been w/out the shot until now. Couldn't get it this month and I am having all those horrible symptoms again. I pray missing this month doesn't make me have a cycle again. I love Lupron, whatever the side effects, doesn't compare to the pain, headaches and horrible flow. I also read reviews of Lupron and started not to get it. Even after the 2nd round, I read the reviews again and hesitated.-musta been crazy! I got the shot in 4 6month doses. It helped me soooooo much. Because of all the bad reviews I chose the lower 3.75 dosages, maybe the high dosage makes side effects worse. I wanted to ease into the medicine, to try to feel out side effects and stop if I needed to. F 51 2 years

5  Severe Endometriosis Vertigo a couple days after injection, sparatic acute ovarian pain for a couple days after injection....all has subsided so far after a couple days. I have a severe case of endometriosis of which most was laser cut during my laparoscopy in September 2005. The pain prior to my surgery was so severe I was unable to work for 3 months. So far I have had 2 injections of the Lupron in a series of 12. My doctor wants me to stay on it for at least 1 year, because of the severity of my endometriosis and the pain that it causes. I haven't had any mood swings, emotional days or hot flashes and Script Assist attributes that to the fact that I was already on Lexapro (anti-anxiety - seratonin inhibitor). I started losing weight before the injections because of nausea and loss of appetite caused from my excruciating pain, but have lost another 8 lbs or so since starting the injections. (30 lbs to date). Not sure if it did, but I hope this helps someone. F 26 2 months

5  Hemmorhaging From Fibroids Hot flashes and sweating. Bone pain first 3 months, none thereafter. I was somewhat "wired" from the Lupron also. I took calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D every night faithfully. I also took 5 mg. daily Provera. F 50 2 years

5  Adenomyosis Hot flashes, sweats, impossible weight loss My primary care physician warned me that lupron caused weight gain....still, I'd glad I'm taking it. I've been on it for about a year and I feel great. Though I have gained considerable weight. I was cramping and bleeding severely. The Lupron injections have put a stop to both. I'd take the hot flashes any day over that horrendous pain!! F 35 1 years

5  Endometriosis some weight gain, hot flashes & night sweats I read a lot of negative reviews about lupron, but decided to trust my doctor. I'm so glad I did! I've been on lupron for 3 months now and have been pain free ever since. I had 1 episode of break-through bleeding when I first started, but that is typical I'm told. I've had night sweats and hot flashes, but those have tapered off. I have gained some weight, but for me, being able to go pain free is worth the trade off. F 26 3 months

5  Endometriosis insomnia, small weight gain, about 1 hot flash a day-if that. So glad I trusted my doctor about taking this! I suffered with absolutely horrible pain for almost a year. Had surgery, found endometriosis, then was put on the Lupron injections and also Aygestin to minimize the hotflashes, etc. I have had 4 injections, I have been pain free since after the first 2 weeks of the 1st shot! I will take the tossing and turning at night and a little weight gain to be pain free! It's just wonderful! F 28 6 months

5  Endometriosis, pain Headaches, fatigue, hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain I just finished my 6 month treatment (1 shot/mo) of Lupron with the last shot being one month ago. I read a LOT of horror stories online prior to taking the drug, but decided that personally, I needed to try it because the benefits could have out weighed the side effects. For me, that was a smart decision. I was in such severe pain. I was on continuous birth control, I had surgery, I took narcotic pain meds, I had cystoscopies and was on the IC diet for months. To say the least, I had investigated other options. I will not down-play the side effects. They are not pleasant. But compared to what I was living with, they are a walk in the park. If you are having mild discomfort and pain from endo, or other issues, think twice before taking this drug. The side effects will probably seem horrific if that is the case. But for me, I will take all those side effects and an extra 30 lbs over the pain and disruption endo was causing in my life. It may be short lived now that the shots are over, but I would do it again if needed and if it will mean keeping all of my organs necessary to conceive. My doctor was thorough in explaining my choices, and I made an informed one. I suggest you do the same for your own situation. F 28 6 months

5  Stage 4 Endometriosis, infertility Mild heartburn for 3 days following my first injection. Mild hot flashes started after my 2nd injection which continued to increase in frequency and intensity. The hot flashes increased following my 3rd injection with night sweats, some insomnia, and some slight changes in irritability. My weight has remained stable and I haven't had problems with acne. I started Lupron Depot 1x/month inj immediately following lap surgery to remove stage 4 endo. My doc's goal was to put me on this med for 3 months to stop estrogen production to allow my body the chance to heal. I had my 3rd injection 3 weeks ago and will be seeing my doctor again next week to discuss the next step towards pursuing IVF. I'm fortunate because I never suffered w/ pain from my endo even though it had bound my organs together resulting in infertility and causing a kink in my bowel. Since starting Lupron, I've had some mild discomfort but nothing intolerable. The hot flashes feel like standing in front of a 400 degree oven when you first open the oven door, but they go away eventually. The night sweats are a nuisance, but I've been able to fall back asleep. I feel irritable at times, but honestly, I made the personal choice to accept that these symptoms are only temporary & this has allowed me to continue living my life without ruminating on how much it sucks to be infertile, to have endo, to have hot flashes as a 34-year old, etc. Remember that the majority of people who write blog entries are going to report their negative symptoms, while the people who don't have the side effects aren't even looking on the internet in the first place. I wanted to put my honest opinion out there to counteract the negative feedback. My heart goes out to anyone who has suffered from this medication. I wish you all the best of luck with your health and fertility:-) F 34 3 months

5  migraines/2cifhystterectomywillhelp hot flashes, hot flashes and night sweats during sleep, one period and 14 days of spotting with first injection, irritabilaty- no pain at all I have had cyclic migraines for over 15 years - after visiting a very renowned headache clinic, top notch nuerologist, pain management dr's etc.. no one would listen to me. I knew my periods where the source of my migraines and have been asking for a hysterectomy for years. The dr's. would just blow me off citing "there is not enough evidenc to prove that a hysterectomy will cure your migranes. After being chronically anemic for years, my hemotalogist and ob cunsulted and FINALLY my ob decided to put me on Lupron. He indicated that if the Lupron worked and eliminated the migraines, he would then preform a hysterctomy. After my first shot, I had a period a bled for approx two additional weeks. It wasn't until I had my second shot that I've had substantial success. For the first time in years I did not have to visit the er to get a shot af narcotics for out of control migraines! They have greatly reduced to just a few, very low on the pain scale and the fact that I have a sinus infection makes me wonder if that may be the culprit. BONUS: I have lost over fifteen pounds without trying or changing a thing and the weight is still coming off - I know each body reacts differently, but for someone who has suffered almost half her life with debilitating migraines-I think it is an answer to a prayer, L.B.  5  Fibroids side effects were light acne on my chest, fatigue, tender skin in genital area. lower back pain in place of menstrual cycle. side effects were only experienced when i did not take the norethin ace 5mg daily. this is a recommended therapy that your doctor should prescribe along with lupron for fibroid treatment. lower back pain did not go away with regular use of norethin, but was resolved with extra strength tylenol. i have regular migraines, and was not out of regular frequency during lupron treatment. finished my 90-day cycle and planning ab-myo at the end of the month. this drug effects EVERYONE differently. i read the horror stories on this site before taking lupron and almost changed my mind. please do not be scared off by someone who had a bad experience. if a few months of inconvenience is worth the chance to have a better surgery and be pain free, healthy, and increase your chances at reproduction, it's a small sacrifice. discuss all of your concerns with your doctor and family to make the best decision for yourself.  5  Severe Endo Hot Flashes, Vaginal Dryness, Weight Loss, I have to believe that comment site such as this one are mostly populated by those who have had negative reactions to this injection. I would like to share my experience with those who feel as if they are at the end of their rope. My OBGYN - a very very well educated doctor suggested after my diagnosis with endo that I try this injection on a 3 month bases with add-back medication and a VERY high dosage of calcium from the start. He was very up front with me that there WOULD BE SIDE EFFECTS. Indeed there were side effects, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, weight loss, and a few night sweats that decreased greatly after we increased my add-back dosage. I took my second 3-month shot and was very content with the side effects. I will take a few hot flashes over the pain of a period any day of the week. I have been off of Lupron for over a year now and have just started having painful periods again, but only on my first day. My doctor and I are discussing my options at this point as Lupron is not *approved* for longer than 6 months of treatment. For those looking to bide some time before having children, or making that decision I would say go for it - talk with you doctor honestly and be honest. F 27 6 months
