CIPRO  (CIPROFLOXACIN HYDROCHLORIDE):  This medication is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Ciprofloxacin belongs to a class of drugs called quinolone antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for virus infections (such as common cold, flu). Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can cause it to not work for future infections.   FDA Approval Date: 1987-10-22 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  UTI joint pain, muscle pain, neuropathy, auditory hallucinations, brain fog, fatigue, anxiety, joint popping, TMJ pain, low body temperature i'm only 26 and this drug ruined my life. 4 pills into my regime, and i knew something was terribly wrong. i was in the worst pain i've ever experienced in my life. i was bedridden for 5 days and i attempted to go to work. i made it 45 minutes into my shift before breaking down, because the pain in my shoulders, spine, and hips was unbearable. i was healthy before this, and now i feel like i traded my body for an 80 year old body. i feel like i have arthritis, fibromyalgia, all of it. i've healed a little bit, but i still deal with symptoms and "flare ups." i've been from doctor to doctor and they can't specify what's going on, but they all agree it was an adverse reaction to cipro. i was cold intolerant before, but that's worse now. my body temperature is always 96-97 when i go to the doctor. i can't warm up. my body is always in pain. this reaction happened back in july, so it hasn't been long but i wish i would heal already. i want to feel normal again. i have days where i can barely move, it feels like lactic acid is building up in my muscles and my joints feel as though there are huge shards of glass in them. there are days i cry, because i worry i'm going to have to apply for disability. i worry what my body will be in 10, 15, 20 years. i can't exercise, i can't work, i can't socialize. i'm restricted to my house most days. i'm 26 and my life feels like it's already over. some days i struggle just to stand up from the couch, i struggle to lean, i struggle t F 26 10 days

1  suspected sinus infection TWO PILLS. That is all it took. Please, do not take this horrible antibiotic or any other one in the Quinolone family, ever. You think you have taken it successfully in the past so you should be fine in the future? Me too. You think people writing here had other health issues that contributed to them being affected by it? I thought that too. I had NO HEALTH PROBLEMS PRIOR. I also successfully took Cipro in the past. I have been dealing with nerve pain, burning, tingling all over my body, insomnia, muscle pain, tendon pain, what feels like bone pain, hair falling out, peripheral neuropathy, intense fatigue (crazy intense, like a flu), and more. Don't do it. There are other options out there. I was affected twice. The first time it took 6 months to nearly heal. Thankfully. This second time it is 9 months. I won't ever be the same as before, but I'm doing pretty good now. I don't want people affected by the antibiotic to think they are a hopeless case...it is not hopeles PLEASE TAKE OFF THE MARKET ASAP. I was not warned. How are there black box warnings on an antibiotic and the patient isn't warned? How? F 39 2 days

1  Thought I had uti Constant diarrhea, nerve pain, anxiety I have taken fluorquinolones before but this was too much. I had been taking amitriptyline for insomnia and nerve pain, started this for suspected uti and it was like being shot with a stun gun. Now have nerve pain,, peripheral neuropathy, fatigue, anxiety, weight loss, extreme depression. If you are dying this might be worth it but caused me a year of pain and still going. F 63 1 days

1  Diverticulitis Pain/Stiffness in joints (knees, ankles, fingers, wrists, toes), numbness/tingling in legs, muscle weakness and pain, fatigue, insomnia, severe anxiety, heart palpitations, tightness in chest radiating to my back, etc On 7/4/18 I had a sudden onset of left-side abdominal pain which was diagnosed as diverticulitis. Prior to that, I had no history of medical conditions, rarely went to the doctor, was completely asymptomatic and considered myself active/healthy. I was prescribed Cipro. On day one of taking it I noticed cramping in my left leg, but brushed it off. On day two, I awoke with stiffness in my wrist and could not move it and pain in my Achilles tendon. I thought I slept wrong. On day three, I had weird shocking sensations in my teeth and my stomach. In the morning I called my doctor and explained the symptoms. He told me he had never heard of these symptoms being associated with Cipro and told me to keep taking it. I didn't listen. Went to a clinic and switched to a different antibiotic. Since being prescribed Cipro, I have unusual symptoms that come and go in waves. Along with those mentioned, I also experience right upper abdominal pain, severe pain in my lower back that causes it to lock up, neck pain, burning sensations in my hamstrings, and more recently left and right flank pain. My hair is also falling out and my skin is excessively dry. All symptoms occur at random and the onset is not attributed to any physical activity. Something as simple as brushing my ankle on a bed sheet can cause shooting pain. F 32 7 days

1  Uncomplicated Diverticulitis I had to stop this awful drug because on day 3, I felt like my entire body was electrocuted and was taken to ER. The problem with Cipro, which is a fluoroquinolone, is that it (and all fluoroquinolones such as Avelox and Levaquin, not only cause horrendous side effects, but the side effects can be PERMANENT. I am 10 mos out from taking this dangerous drug that I've since learned is NOT recommended for uncomplicated diverticulitis by the American Gastroenterological Association. My side effects remain: extreme chronic fatigue (bedridden 10 mos now), unrelenting insomnia, painful neuropathy, damage to both Achilles tendons and to knees, require a walker in the house and a wheel chair if we leave the house, loss of cognition, loss of hair (I am a 61 year-old-women, and half my hair fell out after stopping this horrible medication), and damage to teeth, fingernails, and skin. The FDA has just issued it's 4th black box warning about fluoroquinolones, the most dangerous warning it provides. Unfortunately, few doctors or pharmacists are aware of these black box warnings. I was not warned. The FDA specifically states that no one over 60 should be prescribed this drug; I was 61 (and not told about this warning, either). Cipro and all fluoroquinolones should be reserved for life and death situations when there are NO other options available. In most cases, antibiotics that are far less dangerous can be taken, instead. It is too late for me; I am disabled after taking just 7 pills over the course of 3 1/2 days. It is not too late for you if you are reading this. INSIST ON AN ALTERNATIVE THAT IS NOT A FLUOROQUINOLONE! F 61 3 days

1  Skin infection Racing heart was my most noticeable symptom and most worrisome, stop using it after 3 days when this started happening. muscle spams after taking it, when eating yogurt or consuming probiotic Muscle spams only occurred when taking a pro biotic after I stopped taking cipro. I saw dr and she confirmed a small amount of ppl have this happen, so I could not eat yogurt or probiotic for months after. however my heart palpitations have continued for 3 yrs now after using it and first happening while on cipro. My dr tried to say the heart issue was from anxiety at the time, but now I am pushing for more answers and using a heart monitor. F 30 10 days

1  Cellulitis Everything listed under warning! I have finally (after 3 weeks) started being able feel somewhat normal. I still have a constant metallic/bitter taste in my mouth, even water is a struggle to drink because it tastes so bad and I still have "pins and needles" in my feet, hands and back when I walk. Considering where I was and where I am now, I am SO happy. I just wish I was how I was before I took cipro... Just please use caution when using cipro. Know the possible side effects and at the FIRST sign stop use. My mistake was that I didn't listen to my own body (I knew better:( ) Horrible, nasty, evil, definitely should not be given out easily.  1  Antibiotic I put this medicine on my ALLERGY list. This thing made me so nauseous and I vomited uncontrollably. While driving home and sitting in the passenger seat, I had to vomit so suddenly that I didn't have time to tell the driver to pull over....and I didn't have time to roll down my window! I opened the door while the car was going about 25 mph, and stuck my head out and threw up projectile-style and covered the entire back end of the car with vomit. Maybe this is TMI but I want to warn people of the violent side effects I experienced. F 34 7 days

1  Minor infection Deep aching arm pain. Deep aching (unbearable) muscle pain in upper torso. Sense of being 'out of it' as if drunk during courses. Massive fatigue completely out of character always sleeping. Severe nausea and difficulty eating normal food, consequently weight loss and loss of muscle and fitness. Developed severe IBS where gut would paralyse after eating with exertion. Back pain. Neck pain. Shoulder problems. Tight muscles as if they lost all their collagen. Eventually severe weakness lost use of arms entirely, improved after months but unable to withstand repetitive use or normal level of activity to this day years later. Many effects came one month later and have not gone away. Why is there no zero rating !? Stay clear unless your life depends on it. The doctors and the medication leaflet don't come close to warning the public adequately. Doctors are so ill informed about this class of drugs and often don't recognise the side effects as they emerge and that puts patients at risk of not realising the cause of the new health problems and then taking it again. Many will never make the links to their poor health after these drugs. Side effects can be delayed (Dr Beatrice Golomb describes why this might be) and symptoms can remit and relapse. That sounds strange but one thing to remember with this drug is 'collagen degradation'. Sometimes the problems don't hit until you really try to load the tissues. You can feel fine again but then you try to go to the gym and your body can't withstand it. The warnings don't come close to conveying this reality. Just imagine how many cases of fibromyalgia and other pain conditions, 'idiopathic' neuropathies, and overuse injuries are really side effects of cipro?????? This is why the side effects look rare because side effects get diagnosed as other problems by unsuspecting or unbelieving doctors. F 30 5 months

1  UTI/Bladder infection Took in 9/2014 for 7 days. 2 YEARS LATER - SUFFERING PERMANENT, DISABLING SIDE EFFECTS. While on Cipro - random ice pick pain in both hips, both knees, and shoulder. Terrible lower back pain. Pain all over body. After finishing med - felt like razor blades were slicing both achilles tendons. 8 weeks later - walked up and down stairs/next day could not walk. Both achilles tendons and calf muscles were frozen/taken in wheelchair to orthopaedic doctor. 6 weeks of PT – can now walk, but can never dance, run, exercise, or stand on toes again due to permanent tendon damage. Recently had MRI - diagnosed with tendon damage and bursitis (painful inflammation) in both hips. Hips always painful. Have to lift myself off of car seat with both arms when I drive over speed bumps. Can't do any repetitive movements with my hips. Use heating pad on them and lay down a lot. Hurts to walk for too long in store. Cipro also damaged thyroid - caused hypothyroidism. Nails broke off in chunks after Cipro RUN AS FAR AWAY AS YOU CAN FROM THIS POISON (while you can still run) I IMPLORE YOU - DO NOT EVER TAKE THIS DRUG - IT WILL RUIN YOUR LIFE. (THIS INCLUDES LEVAQUIN AND AVELOX,TOO) I have done a lot of research these past 2 painful years. Cipro was originally created for anthrax exposure only. It also has been used as a chemo drug, and it acts like a CHEMO drug. It is NOT an antibiotic. It works by damaging bacteria DNA, so they cannot replicate, but it also PERMANENTLY damages human DNA. Hundreds of thousands of people have been injured by this drug. Many are permanently bedridden - in chronic pain, crippled, cannot walk. There have been hundreds of thousands of complaints filed with the FDA. There are at least 4 Black Box warnings on this drug, which is the closest thing it can get to being pulled from the market. Warning #1: Tendon damage/rupture Warning #2: Permanent nerve damage Warning #3: Permanent Mitochondria Damage Warning #4: (Posted 7/26/16) As per FDA, "Can cause disabling and potentially permanent side effects of the tendons, muscles, joints, nerves, and central nervous system that can occur together in the same patient." IF YOU VALUE YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE - YOU WILL NOT TAKE THESE MEDICINES AND ASK FOR ANOTHER, SAFER ANTIBIOTIC. CONSIDER THIS REVIEW AS GOD WARNING & PROTECTING YOU. Look up "Cipro is Poison" website to learn more. This website is about a healthy 30 year old guy who took 12 pills and has been bed-ridden for past 6 years. F 43 7 days

1  bladder Wheelchair, unable to stand or walk, nerve stabbing pains in arms and left side of face. wasting, hair loss, gum loss, torture to do anything at all., Burn all over. Former FDA commissioner Margaret Hamburg named in massive conspiracy and racketeering lawsuit involving Johnson & Johnson, a Wall Street hedge fund, and the Levaquin drug. "This Amended Complaint sets forth allegations that involve a conspiracy by Defendants, each and every one of them, to reap large financial returns by failing to disclose to Plaintiffs and the public at large the full extent of the devastating, life-threatening, and deadly effects of a highly dangerous pharmaceutical drug named Levaquin," reads the opening of the lawsuit. The conspiracy complaint also alleges that over 5,000 people died as a result of Hamburg's conspiracy cover-up at the FDA: Once confirmed as FDA Commissioner, Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg acted as the instrumentality that all Defendants used to perpetrate their conspiracy and racketeering enterprise by having her act illegally and outside the scope of her authority as FDA Commissioner to suppress material information to Plaintiffs and the public that Levaquin was inherently dangerous and in fact, deadly. Had this information been disclosed to Plaintiffs and the public at large, her and her husband's financial gain and net worth would have plummeted, since Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg's husband, Peter F. Brown, reaped and continues to reap huge financial gain as a result of Renaissance Technologies, L.L.C.'s holdings of Johnson & Johnson stock. F 50 1.5 days

1  UTI extreme pain of muscles with burning and crawling sensation of my skin, that bad that I cried day and night and no painkillers worked on this. The pain went through stomach, to sides, to back, to arms and hands to my hips and tights, I thought I am dying as I never experienced such an extreme pain. I was on morphine 5 weeks and out of work as I was weak and unable to walk, my legs became so weak from my knees down. later I developed burning and numbness over my face and on the top of my head. Severe diarrhea two weeks after finishing the dose. Terrible nausea, was scared to fall a sleep in the night as I felt like I am loosing myself, and will never wake up. Temperature moving from 37.8 to 33.2 through 15 minutes. Severe pain in carpool nerve on right hands suddenly from one day to another. Went to ER more than 10 times, all were looking at me like I am crazy, as all results were ok. Totally lost appetite and lost 6 kg in 3 weeks. Was out of work more than two months as I was unable to do not take it, ask doctor for second option! There is always the second option.  1  UTI Nausea, joint pain, feeling weak, disoriented but anxious at night. This drug should be taken off the market! I was supposed to take 500 mg for 3 days but only did 2 days as the side effects were not tolerable. My hip hurt so bad and I felt drowsy during the day yet anxious at night.
