1  Knee Replacement Before my scheduled knee replacement, I told the surgeon that I did not want VERSED under any circumstances because the use of it during previous procedures had made me very sick and had also caused loss of memory. He assured me that all I had to do was tell the anesthesiologist when I got to the hospital. However, when the anesthesiologist came in, it was with two other nurses, all three of whom pressured me into letting them use "the tiniest bit" of VERSED, to help me get through the spinal injection I would be having. With my family also siding in against me, I consented and have been sorry ever since. Again, I've suffered memory loss from the VERSED. Now I am scheduled for minor surgery and have told the surgeon, his nurse, and the surgical center, that I don't want VERSED and that, if they try to force it on me this time, I will walk out without the surgery. One positive note: When I had my pre-op exam, my family doctor made a notation on my allergy list regarding VERSED: LONG TIME MEMORY LOSS. I would advise anyone reading this to insist that their doctor(s) do the same so that you will have a record of when you reported it to your doctor, should you ever need that information. F 74

1  Given Versed and Spinal Block for T I felt and remembered pain during surgery also could hear and feel pounding. Still remembered after surgery. After surgery terrible muscle spasms they were also unable to get pain under control for almost 8 hours after surgery. I will NEVER let them give me versed again, nor will I ever recommend it for anyone having a major surgery. I have nightmares about the surgery. Horrible experience and I have had several prior surgeries first time they used versed. F 62 1 days

4  Tonsillectomy elation upon administration. it looked like the anesthesiologist had 2ml in a 3ml syringe so whatever the normal dosing (mg/ml) is. I have an exam and believe i am cognitive enough to study 30 minutes post surgery. Not worried about the "forgetful" side-effect of versed M 28 1 days

5  Dental surgery (wisdom teeth) No unwanted or unwelcome effects. My experience was pleasant and precisely what I'd been led to expect. Oral triazolam gave very mild sedation and was followed by midazolam (versed) 40 mins later. Within seconds of insertion of the IV, i lost normal consciousness. Subjectively, it was like falling out into a relaxed sleep. Within hours my mind was clear and at ease. I am feeling great today, only 16 hours post-op. Clearly an excellent drug when used appropriately. M 49 1 days

1  Hip replacement surgery Flashback and hysteria prior to loss of consciousness. Unaware of surroundings for several hours post surgery followed by fog, nausea and indigestion. Had constant hiccups (and unable to sleep) for over 24 hours and didn't eat for 48 hours after that. Sense of fear and anxiety for a week. Many years ago I had a severe reaction to halothane as a general anesthesia and lost half my liver, developed halothane hepatitis and spent several years regenerating my liver. I avoided general anesthesia since by having Propofol and fentanyl as twilight sedation or Propofol and epidural or spinal. Once an anesthesiologist gave me Propofol, fentanyl and versed, and I was violently ill. Two weeks ago I had to have general and the the anesthesiologist agreed to only give me Propofol to both induce and maintain the general. After my horrible experience, I checked my medical record and saw that the anesthesiologist had broken our agreement and given me versed along with the Propofol. I need to have the other hip replaced and will have to find a different hospital because I will never trust this hospital with my safety again and a new surgeon because my surgeon only operates at this hospital. Given my experience, I could not enter the OR or look at the hip operating table without remembering the panic, dishonesty and illness I suffered. F 64

1  cataract surgery Spouse was given Versed pre-op. He remained unconscious for 2 hours after the 10 minute surgery. Then he kept asking the same questions over and over. He couldn't remember anything at all the rest of that day and the next day also. His memory still isn't the same 2 months after being given this drug. M 70 1 times

1  Cataract Surgery IV Anesthetic I was given Versed for cataract surgery, a small amount before the surgery and more during the surgery. I woke up from the surgery feeling just fine and went home. I fell asleep for two hours, then woke up and had the most out of control, horrible feeling of devastating depression with some suicidal thoughts, have never ever had anything like that in my life! It was so extreme I made my husband go call the doctor immediately, and for a moment thought I might have to go to the hospital. Thank God that feeling passed within a few minutes, but was followed by out-of-control feelings of distress and anxiety that would come and go. I felt completely overwhelmed some of the time. I would feel OK for a couple hours and then walk into her grocery store and feel like I was having a nervous break down. It's now one week since the surgery and the feelings are much less intense, but still can come and go. I also remain physically very drained. Went to the gym today and had a hard time doing anyt M 62 1 days

1  MRI sedation-neuromuscular disease NONE- I walked out of the facility 1hr later as if nothing had been given to me. I was given Versed IV to relax my body and potentially stop my twitching caused by my neuromuscular disease. This medication was ineffective. I didn't fall asleep or forget anything. I was fully awake and aware of my twitching body. I had 3 MRIs scheduled I wasn't able to successfully complete the 1st one. There was not a single readable image. I will be rescheduled under general anesthesia to complete my MRIs to look for any changes in my brain as well as my spinal cord. F 32 1 days

5  Colonoscopy I was groggy until the next day, but I'm not sure that it was from the Versed. I was given the Versed with Fentanyl, and this is the first time I've had Fentanyl. The combination was wonderful because I felt nothing at all, and I only remember a little, which is just what I wanted. F 59

5  EGD A bit loopy. Very tired. Slept for about 4 hours after I came home. Don't remember conversations with the doctor or my husband. Still a bit tired and I'm sure I will sleep well tonight. I was given Versed with Fentanyl for and EGD. I remember talking to the nurses and the doctor before the procedure and then starting to feel a bit loopy. Almost like a dizzy feeling but weird. Then the next thing I remember is being in the wheelchair and getting in the car. F 37 1 days

1  lung biopsy horrible headache and nausea, and I rarely get either. Finally threw up several times what seemed like a gallon yellow liquid, and felt a little better Remembered everything about biopsy, comments made, i.e. dr. had to go in a second place & I asked about what was going on and I remember what they explained, and remembered how it felt etc. (uncomfortable but not really painful), so I don't know what the point of giving Versed was. The biopsy was a piece of cake compared to the after effects. I'm going to claim allergic in the future (thanks to whoever mentioned this, great suggestion). F 57 1 days

5  Two Root Canals IV sedation I had Versed combined with Propofol & Fentanyl for a 1-2 hour root canal procedure. My teeth don't get numb, so I had no other choice but to be put under. I was given the IV, was out in less than a minute, and woke up feeling like only a few minutes had gone by. I remember none of the procedure, felt no pain, and had no memory loss outside of the procedure. I didn't wake up at all during it. I was groggy for 1-2 days, and threw up once about 10 minutes after waking up. I'm very sensitive to nausea and grogginess though, so it probably was worse for me than others. In general, I thought this combination was great for the procedure and had no surprising side effects. If not for this, I'd have to have root canals and feel everything. Don't forget that most people who have no side effects don't report things online. Don't be scared if you're getting this drug. It's very common and the vast majority of people do not have any side effects at all! F 35

1   hernia surgery, general anesthesia, versed used as pre medication before going to the operating room, this drug was given to me without any warning while I was talking with the nurse , so I felt like I was in the fight of my life I couldn't see talk nor move this onset was harsh not soft like a floating off to sleep drug which I have experienced in the past I assume it knocked me out at that point I don't know. Post op was also strange, I felt like I was talking but it wasn't me or I was outside my body chatting, at the point when they determined I was ready to leave I dressed and was taken home I had a huge desire to leave I'll call it fear. I have never experienced this in the past surgeries. I also experienced depression after surgery, this was a first for me, and was not my self for the 1st month after surgery, didn't pay my monthly bills, which is extremely odd for me, I manage a couple of rentals and care for elderly parents and was not up to doing normal business tasks. I didn't take any hydrocodone after surgery just ibuprofen for the discomfort. F 68 1 days

5  eye surgeries I was given Versed before each of two eye surgeries - three weeks apart. I received an oral dose. The most negative thing I can say about this medication is that it had a bitter taste. The drug started taking effect after about 15 minutes. I was generally aware of when they took me into the first procedure room, but after that I have no recollection although I am told that I followed doctor's instructions very well during that time. They didn't want me asleep, just very relaxed. The effect starting wearing off within an hour, and I was out of the facility and on my way home within 90 minutes. As directed, I did lay down for a nap as soon as I got home and I slept soundly for about three hours. (the first time, I only had time for about a 60 minute nap because I was going out to a show that night.) My response to this medication was so positive that would like to have my dentist and oral surgeon use it for their procedures. 😉 No negative side effects, tolerated it well. F 50 2 times

5  Colonoscopy No side effects - worked perfectly. Took before colonoscopy along with propofol. I nicely drifted off in the exam room and awoke 20 minutes later. No side effects, just sleepy the rest of the day. This was my 7th time having Versed and I now request it when I know I'm having any type of procedure. F 31
