I had the full giardia symptoms acutely (aching belly, D&V, reduced appetite, intermittent nausea), but when diagnosed at 14 days later had only intermittent nausea, very low appetite and slightly loose stools. These have been completely eliminated by Flagyl, my appetite reurning in two days and the nausea gone in four. Worst bit was abstinence from alcohol! Have avoided alcohol like the plague after the pharmacist told me that even a little would make me violently ill (he said it has the same stuff in it that is in Antabuse (sp?), which they give to alcoholics to make them completely miserable if they drink any alcohol at all...) My doctor did not mention any of this to me, and I had never heard of Metronidazole before, so I just figured it was similar the other antibiotics I have taken over the years. I am on day 3 of a 2x/day 5 day regimen. It seems to be working on my BV as I don't smell nearly as bad as I have been, and not much discharge either. FLAGYL (METRONIDAZOLE): Metronidazole is an antibiotic that is used to treat a wide variety of infections. It works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria and parasites. This antibiotic treats only certain bacterial and parasitic infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu). Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can cause it to not work for future infections.
