3  Interstitial cystitis, insomnia Fatigue, 'dead' feeling emotionally, low energy, PAINS IN HIP JOINTS AND CALF MUSCLES I started taking Atarax because I read that it helps bladder pain due to interstitial cystitis. I noticed that it helped insomnia and it works very well for this. Because of MCS (multiple chemical sensitivities), especially to wood smoke, I have allergic brain reactions that trigger out-of-control crying jags and rage, as well as profound depressions that can border on suicidal. I spent thousands of dollars on psychotherapy before discovering that all I had to do was take an antihistamine and I'd be fine. For this, Atarax as well as Benadryl work wonderfully well. However, the price I pay is the side effects I listed. I thought I had arthritis until I figured out that the pains come and go according to whether I have taken Atarax or not. The more Atarax I've taken, the worse the pain, sometimes almost crippling. I have the same reactions to Benadryl and have entered these comments on the Benadryl page as well. F 77 3 years

3  shingles/post shingle pain taken at about 9pm,I was still drowsy in the morning. It has a more potent effect with a can or two of beer.I would not dare to drive after taking it,and have cut down to a quarter of a tablet and will try tonight to do without anything to see if it helps me not to be dizzy, and head-aches,in the morning. I take prednisolone for asthma, and if I am on a high dose the drug helps me to sleep. I think anybody being prescribed this drug, should be prepared to go to bed,in case it has adverse effects M 70 4 years

4  nerves, and allery I stopped taking atarax, and I notice that all my arthritis type symptons are gone. I would take at night before bed, and wake up each day with seems like so many joints aching. It owuld take half the day to begin to feel better. Now Two nights without it and no joint aches. Is this a true sympton of this drug, because emotionally it has helped me so much and also with my allergies..thank you Would like very much to continue to take but..tha joint pain does seem to be related to this 10 Mg pill F 69 25 days

5  Allergies None Have suffered with horrible seasonal allergies. I made an appointment with an allergist for testing. I'm off the charts for seasonal allergies and indoor dust mites. She prescribed Nasonex along with irrigating my sinuses once a day in the morning. I also covered my mattress and pillows with protective covers to prevent dust mites. She also prescribed Atarax for bedtime. It works fantastic. I've never had a better night's sleep and I feel great in the morning. Wonderful drug! M 64 14 days

2  vestibulitis It does make you a bit sleepy. But the worst side effect was the gastritis that resulted. That's inflammation of the lining of the stomach and means at least 6 weeks of Nexium type drugs. It is very painful. I looked up the side effects of Atarax and sure enough, there was gastrointestinal distress...and that's what I have now. I will not take this drug again even though it helped with the vestibulitis. I found that the herb Valerian root capsules works just as well with no side effects, take at bedtime and sleep like a baby. I did not take Atarax for a straight 200 and some days...I actually only took it when the auto-immune problem flared up, so it was off and on for almost a year. F 63 250 days

5  Severe itching (skin) Initially I was given too high a dose, and very briefly experienced some confusion; but once the optimum dose for me was found (about 30-50 mg per day) there was some drowsiness and occasional dryness in the mouth. It was highly effective in countering previously intense itching. The physician who prescribed Atarax (in hospital) very soon found an effective dose that suppressed the itching without causing confusion. M 62 52 days

3  contact dermatitis (itchy skin) mild drowsiness, dry mouth, hoarseness I have tried atarax(20-30 gms/day)on and off for several years for a contact dermatitis condition of unknown cause, which causes severe itchy skin. When it has worked it reduces itchiness to a more bearable level. It does not make the itchiness completely go away. Sometimes I have tried it with no success at all. Dry mouth and hoarseness are some of the side effects. The only way I have found of reducing these side effects is to stop taking the atarax. M 62 3 years

2  Insomnia I am not sure if it is the side effect of this drug or of Zoloft (I was put on both at the same time), but I am almost comatose and feel clumsy...constantly dropping things on The floor… Side effects were much less pronounced the 1st week I took this drug...and was on a half dose of 25 mg F 61 10 days

3  Itching Nothing for over 40 years (other than drowsiness) then post menopause, its drying effect was bad on my complexion. So I stopped cold turkey OMG! For a few months after stopping abruptly (an idiot move in retrospect) last April, the insomina was horrid for a few months. That resolved. But what's followed has been a nightmare. The ringing in my years is so noteworthy, I have to attempt to talk over it. I never had anxiety before (a mental brick) now I feel close to panic for no reason. I'll wake up with dread. My resting pulse rate has gone from around 65 to 120 (that's upon waking!). My heart will pound, my pulse will roar through my extremities, throbbing unmercifully. I can go on, but you get the idea. It was so bad, I had all my hormone levels checked. I had a thyroidectomy in the early '60s so I watch that regularly and take dessicated natural hormone replacement. Over 9 moths later, blood levels are all normal, and clearly I am not. I have no other underlying health issues. How long will this last?! (the rhetorical cry of the damned) I'm wondering whether to start back on a very low dose (like splitting the pills to 2 or 5 mg) but I'd rather not. I'll watch this site for any signs of encouragement (OK, that may be wishful thinking-- even documented discouragement will do.) I can't find anything to replicate my experience online. Thanks.  4  Anxiety I also have took myself off and I am now itching ALL OVER ..anyone know how long it takes to get out of your system?? This medicine did help me initially but I found I was getting clumsy ...angry and putting on weight .I have enough problems with hypothyroidism… gaining weight feeling as if I have dementia because my brain doesn't function !!! I read that Atarax can also exacerbate these symptoms and that it's not meant long term usage so I've weaned myself off it . F 59 3 years

5  Acute attack of hives I had the best sleep I've experienced for years! I do feel a little sluggish the next morning, but this tends to wear off as the day goes on. As a chronic insomniac, I've tried virtually everything in an effort to get a good night's sleep. Conventional sleeping tablets either don't work, give me rebound insomnia when I stop taking them, or make me feel so awful the next day that it simply isn't worth it. Purely by chance I discovered that Atarax works like a charm for me - 8 or more hours of deep, restful sleep. I don't take it every night as I suspect that the effect would wear off. Also, it isn't recommended for people with early signs of glaucoma, such as raised intra-ocular pressure, which my opthalmologist is monitoring me for. I just keep this wonderful pill as a sure-fire cure when I can't handle the insomnia any longer. F 58 8 months

5  Took it for a severe case of hives I had NO side effects at all. Only benefits I had severe hives all over my body for a full month..not an inch that wasn't welted. No idea of why and not allergic to things. Finally I was given Atarax and with one pill within 24 hrs they were 95% gone (what relief)!! I took one more and I was fine. It did make me sleepy but it like a miracle!!! Never got that again, TG. I could have kissed that doctor who gave it to me. I was so full of scratches & sores from the unbearable itch, it was horrible and nothing gave me relief till the Atarax. F 55 2 days

5  Chronic hives nothing now, but at first it was drawsiness I started with 250mg daily and withing 2 wks reduced the dosage to half of a 25 mg per day. I have been using the generic pill (Hydroxine HCL) for 30 years. I have experimented with other pills, but nothing worked as well as this one. My allergy comes like a clockwork and I know when to take the pill. You need to reduce the dosage until you find what works for you. That way, the drwsiness will go away. M 55 30 years
