I went off cold turkey about two weeks ago, and am starting to feel slightly better. Was prescribed 40mg a day after an Endoscopy found I had gastritis. Before this drug I had mild anxiety issues, but was healthy, fit, energetic and active. I've lost close to 10lbs in a week and have hardly been able to go to work or care for myself. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS DRUG!! EMAIL ME any tips or how long it took you to feel better. Way more than I can list here. | I have been using omeprazole (Prilosec) for over two years to help with my GERD symptoms. At first, it worked well, but now I have noticed several side effects. The most serious side effects are intense anxiety and panic attacks. I also have body aches, joint pain, and a general feeling of being unwell. Recently, I have felt a lack of energy, no matter how much rest I get. This can lead to low levels of B12, magnesium, and vitamin D because the medication can affect how my body absorbs nutrients. There are other side effects I haven’t mentioned here due to space. Please take this seriously. On day 2 of course noticed very sore right side neck, first i thought this was due to indigestion and reaction to antibiotic (even though first time I ever took antibiotics no reaction like this), but then realised it could be omeprazole as had same pain first time I took it a few weeks back. Then, day 3 got progressively worse. Mid upper back pain, and joint ankle pain left side, depression and feeling so low and moody, creaky voice, sore and dry throat. Over the course of the next 3 days, I was almost bed bound with my laptop as just had no will to do anything (I work from home) and so much pain in my chest and back I thought I was going crazy. Day 6 was the final straw. Took my dose at 5pm. By 5.30, had severe esophageal tenderness that even drinking water hurt! That night in bed I was jolted awake with tingling in my left foot and stabbing pain right side of chest. I have 1 more day of antibiotic course tomorrow, but I'm going to talk to my GP and say I'm not taking another dose of PPI. | F | 39 | 6 days 20mg 2X day | 7/6/2023 | 1 | Too much stomach acid, IBS, hernia | I have always had stomach issues. I was having an IBS flare up and my doctor ran some tests. I had 7 ulcers, gastritis, and bloody stools. I was prescribed this medication to reduce stomach acid. On the second day I started having headaches and heartburn, which I hadn't felt in years. My appetite was shot. I was basically surviving off oranges. It made my diarrhea worse and the most painful gas set in. Can't sleep or if I do it's brief. Constantly thirsty and frequent urination. I started having heart palpitations, muscle weakness and pain, brain fog.... It's been total hell. | I ended up feeling way worse then I ever felt beforehand. Please be very cautious if you choose to take it. This pill should be illegal! I was prescribed omeperazole after getting gastritis. After about 2.5 weeks on the medication, I began to go severely downhill. Insane nausea, stomach pains, that would not cease. I also started getting very intense anxiety and would pace my house literally all day and night, trembling. I still didn't know it was the omeperazole! Went to my GI, had every blood and stool test imaginable done, had an upper endoscopy done which revealed a perfectly fine stomach, had ultrasounds of all my organs done, etc. Everything came back fine. But I was going downhill and fast. In a matter of 6 days, I lost 14 pounds. Then something clicked and I thought about the only common denominator: omeperazole. I went online and realized I wasn't alone; so many people have experienced the same symptoms: nausea, stabbing pain, weight loss, insane anxiety and depression, etc. I went off cold turkey that day, even though they say doing so in that fashion can be dangerous due to rebound effects. I immediately started feeling better. The nausea, stabbing pain, etc., went away! The anxiety has been slower, but I'm getting better every day. It's been about 4 weeks since I stopped the awful medication, and I am almost back to normal. The anxiety has taken some mental work to get through but you can do it! Do not take this medication! I was diagnosed with GERD and a Hiatal Hernia (runs in my family). I was prescribed 40mg of omeprazole a day for life. I took it for 2 months and everything was great, my symptoms were gone and I had no side effects. I was off of it for a few days without withdrawal symptoms because I went on vacation and forgot my meds. I came back and started taking it again. 2 days into taking them I was just standing around and I had a horrific panic attack out of nowhere. I almost passed out about 5 times in the span of an hour, I had chills, I was shaking, I could barely breathe, my heart was racing. So naturally I went to the ER. All of my tests came back perfect. I then talked to my uncle (who is a doctor) and he told me it's just anxiety, and that I must be stressed about something in my life. The only thing is that I'm happier than I've ever been at this stage in my life, and ive never even had anxiety or depression. Theres no way that 2 days into taking the meds again, I feel these side effects without them being correlated. Every doctor ive spoken to has said that omeprazole doesnt cause side effects. This pisses me off because I know my body better than anybody else, a PhD doesnt make you god. I stopped taking the meds a few days ago and have started taking B12, magnesium and 5htp supplements to combat the sever anxiety that I'm feeling constantly. (never had any of these before pill) tapered off quite a bit. Stomach was on fire like a swallowed lava after I quit taking the pill, my appetite did return and I started to eat again. I lost 15 pounds that first week from not eating and I’m not a big guy. Weeks 2-4 I still had all my symptoms, it’s just they weren’t as intense. The extreme fatigue was gone. I think I had my first day around week 3 where I almost felt good. Week 4-6 Many of symptoms started to disappear and fade. The night sweats were gone. I was sleeping better. Waking up a lot, but at least getting 5-6 hours a night. Sore tongue was gone. Dizziness and brain fog were fading quickly. Burping was gone. Sour stomach, nausea and hot flashes were fading. I was having a few more good days. Week 6-8. All my symptoms were gone or fading. Headaches are gone. My stomach issues are 98% resolved. Months 3-4 The face and arm tingling remained for the next 2 months. I thought I had permanent nerve dame but it just a really long time for them to completely fade away. PRILOSEC (OMEPRAZOLE): Omeprazole is used to treat certain stomach and esophagus problems (such as acid reflux, ulcers). It works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes. It relieves symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough. This medication helps heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus, helps prevent ulcers, and may help prevent cancer of the esophagus.
