1  Migraine Pervention Tingling of hands and feet, vision problems, extreme anxiety, agitation, intrusive thoughts of harm, chest pain, sweaty hands. Even after two years of being off medication is still experiencing all symptoms except tingling of hands and feet and vision problems. This should not be prescribed to someone that has underlying anxiety and OCD. My son's life has been ruined. Horrible for a mother to witness her son with these life altering symptoms that no one can fix. M 25 3 weeks

3  Migraine prevention Nausea, memory problems, some tingling in feet (subsided after 4-6 months), lack of appetite, weight loss, anxiety, persistent low grade fever, hyperthermia, anhidrosis, dry mouth, kidney infection. Horrendous watery diarrhoea and sometimes stomach pain that felt like someone was stabbing me with glass from the inside. I really tried to persevere with topamax as it almost stopped all my migraines and headaches. However the persistent fever went on for nearly 5 months and the drs didn't know what it was. I had lots of tests and they gave up. I decided to take matters in to my own hands and slowly taper off. I'd researched Topamax and persistent fever as a side effect. It was causing me to be off work constantly because I felt so unwell plus a kidney infection which kept me off of work for almost 2 months. My IBS was well controlled with diet but I developed severe watery diarrhoea and have been living on imodium. The weight is falling off very quickly. I am now day 4 of being off of Topamax completely. I am having some insomnia and high anxiety on the mornings. Otherwise I have not had a problem tapering. I can't wait to have this drug out of my system mainly due to the awful side effects. I think before taking it you have to decide whether the benefits outweigh the risks. F 8 months

1  Doctor prescribed Tingling in toes and fingers, finding it hard to come up with everyday words and spell them, racey heart, feeling like someone was behind me, not sure of my steps on stairs - overall creapy! My new doctor put me on this because he took me off a beta blocker that kept my migraines away until I got cancer. It was given to me as a preventative. F 59 5 days

2  Yes Memory loss, anorexia, suicidal ideation. Diminished emotional, cognitive and memory capacity. Thoughts of impending doom. Lack of pleasure in anything and everything. Bright streaks/balls going through my corner fields of vision - randomly. Increased aggression. GI upset. WIthdrawal symptoms from hell. Massive hair loss. Thanks to the generic version of this med, I think I may have experienced Hell. Prescribed for weight loss, but not worth losing everything good about yourself in the process. Even after stopping a week ago, I still feel like a zombie and like I have lost myself. Zero emotion (which is so unusual for me). The anxiety caused a cold sore outbreak, which I haven't had in 2 years. Complete loss of motivation. Personally, I will lose weight the good old fashioned way vs lose my mind with this horrible med. I really hope I return to my old self soon. There are ways to lose weight that make you feel good and empowered, this just makes you want to die. What a nasty med. Feel free to contact me if you are experiencing problems or know how to get yourself back to normal after taking this med. F 41 6 weeks

3  Migraines Word finding issues, memory loss, but the worst lately is the depression. I have a history but I didn't realize how much Topamax impacted my mood until recently. I'm detached and want to isolate. It worked for migraines but I'd rather go back to Botox or anything else to have my cognitive functioning and emotions stable again. F 43 2 years

1  seizure disorder Horrible gastric problems: nausea, diarrhea all the time. Total loss of motivation. I was supposed to be ramping up to 250 mg, but never got past 100. It felt like the drug was reorganizing my intestines, and not in a good way. The diarrhea went away about 2 weeks after I took my last dose. I barely ate anything the whole time i was on it, to control the diarrhea. Also, the loss of motivation: I've never experienced anything like that. I sat on the bed for 3 weeks staring at the ceiling, and that was all I could do. I am a self-employed artist and normally I don't sit down much during the day. The motivation has come back, thank heavens, and my mood improves the longer I am off it. I was trying to replace Keppra with topomax, but nope. This was a really frightening drug for me.  1  Weight loss THIS DRUG IS POISON! I have been on it twice and the first time it worked great. I lost 90 pounds (in combination with phentermine), then the weight loss leveled off so I quit. Several years later (2022) I tried it again and it didn't do anything so I decided to quit again. While I was on the drug I didn't really notice many side effects except for maybe slight depression, but let me tell you, coming off it is a NIGHTMARE, even if you do it slowly, like I did. Both times I suffered days of tachycardia, irregular heartbeat, emotional lability, night sweats, and more. I even went to the hospital on one occasion for palpitations and suspected dehydration, and I was so dry they couldn't even get any blood out of me after 7 sticks and couldn't get an IV going. Fortunately, the withdrawals seem to be short-lived and diminished greatly by the 3rd day off the medicine. I am writing this here to remind myself never to take this evil pill again!! F 58 10 days

1  Trigeminal Neuralgia I lost three of my longtime friends because I said something that I don't even remember.  4  Migraines A little mushy brained when first talking it- like it's harder to recall some words and I felt a bit dulled sometimes. It goes away especially if it's take a lower dose. I think it causes a bit of hair loss too. I have taken Topamax for quite awhile for migraines and it has helped with that a lot. It also has some unexpected benefits. I think it helps with menopausal symptoms and it seems to calm anxiety a bit. I only noticed these things when I have stopped taking it. I realized it was doing more than I realized. It's not easy for me to get off , though, it takes very slowly weaning down. I prefer not to take medicine I don't need, so it have experimented with cutting it out. F 57 5 years

5  Bipolar/migraines The side effects from this drug make it sound awful but this one has been a total game changer for me. I might have a few balance issues here and there I'm not really sure if this is the medicine or because I can be a klutz but it's never given me brain fog and I've always been forgetful so I can't blame that on this life saving drug. It has taken my appetite and I only eat about once a day. I take it in conjunction with Cymbalta and it controls my bipolar symptoms pretty well most of the time. Topamax is an "off label" mood stabilizer that was originally favorable to me first of all because of how I reacted to other medications like depakote, lithium, and risperidol, but also because of the weight loss factor and the problems I have with my lower back. It's taken my migraines away either completely or made them so "dull" I can usually take care of them with Tylenol or can still take Maxalt with it. If there was an option for 10 stars instead of 5 I'd give it to topamax. M 30 4 months

1  Weight loss While on topiramate- suicidal thoughts, easily angered, drowsiness, confusion, felt stupid, irritability, carbonated drinks taste flat, no appetite, frequent urination. Once off Topiramate- body aches, chills, cold feet, tingling in hands, feet, random parts of my body. Neck and back tension, eye pain, heart palpitations, anxiety, shaking, slight headache, & itching! This medicine drove me to want to kill myself and be snappy with my babies so I quit cold turkey. I've been off for 4 days and I'm still having drowsiness(not as extreme) and all the above it's scary! I thought something was happening to me I was going to go to the er until I looked up withdrawal symptoms! F 24 7 days
