PROGESTERONE  (PROGESTERONE):  Progesterone is a type of female hormone (progestin). This medication is similar to the progesterone that your body naturally makes and is given to replace the hormone when your body is not making enough of it. In women who are not pregnant and not going through menopause, this medication is used to restore normal menstrual periods that have stopped for several months (amenorrhea). Progesterone is also used as part of combination hormone replacement therapy with estrogens to reduce menopause symptoms (e.g., hot flashes). Progesterone is added to estrogen replacement therapy to reduce the risk of cancer of the uterus. This medication is not for use in children. Progesterone must not be used to test for pregnancy.    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Low levels Some acid reflux if taking too much It saved my life. I couldn't sleep, I had intercystial cystitis, panic attacks, low thyroid, and the list goes on. I can't drink alcohol or coffee if I am not on progesterone. I take compounded oral version. Prometrium didn't agree with me, and cream doesn't seem like it's enough. F 48 2 years

1  low progesterone level leg muscle fatigue -- could no longer participate in strength training workouts. Usually, I could complete a spin class with no problem. After a year of progesterone therapy, my leg muscles ached during classes. Lost ability to maintain balance/coordination while descending stairs. Breasts became full and tender, ankles would swell at night, trouble breathing normally at night when sleeping on my left side and my heart would pound. I could not get out of bed in the morning. Not just fatigue, but felt like a zombie. Acne on my back and chest. Also, developed an ovarian cyst. The final straw was extreme nausea in the middle of the night. I would wake up with nausea and indegestion. I finally stopped taking progesterone and felt better the next day -- not 100 percent, but I was able to wake up and get out of bed like normal. During the first week of stopping progesterone, I was back to my old self at the gym and regained my strength, stamina and agility. All the symptoms previously F 48 730 days

1  pms, migraines, low levels Severe shortness of breath, muscle weakness, severe depression, suicidal After reading this page, clearly I am not the only one that has had massive negative side effects from progesterone supplementation. I am sensitive to a lot of meds but 18 months on from stopping and my body is still trying to regain balance. Each cycle when my natural progesterone is at it's highest, my breathing difficulties return and nothing can be done about it. If I take any nerve relaxants like magnesium, herbal medicines or I have tried antidepressants, it makes my shortness of breath unbearable. I will never get back the last 18 months with my young kids. There are many avenues to try - just don't go down this road. F 35

1  Menopause/Estrogen Dominance Severe Hot flashes/Night sweats, insomnia, tingling in hands, severe panic attacks at night, racing heart, extreme fatigue, heavy limbs, shortness of breath, extreme dizzy (like vertigo), jaw and sinus pressure, brain fog, brain nerve pain. I started taking Dr. Lee's progesterone cream for three or 4 months. Started off good but then started having severe night time panic attacks. I felt like I was going to die. Hot flashes started to get worse. Did not think anything just thought it was part of the menopause. I then ran out of the Cream and skipped a month but symptons were not getting better. I then went back to order more of Dr. lee's cream but thier web site was down so I ordered another from Amazon. It was Progesterone Cream Bio-Identical USP - NO Phenoxyethanol . Started using this and things got really bad. Severe Hot flashes, Sever panic attacks at night, multiple times through out the night. Heart racing, like I was having a heart attack, Severe dizziness, like I have vertigo, nausea, Brain fog, head and jaw pressure. I started researching the internet and come across this blog and am so thankful to know I am not losing my mind. I stopped using the cream about two weeks ago but still feeling the side effects. Does anyone know how to cure this??? I am desperate!!! I can't hardly function and I want to be back normal. Please e-mail me at [email protected] if you have any suggestions. F 50 3 months

4  To bring on a period Extreme hunger, dizziness. Doctor prescribed me 200mg of progesterone to take on cycle days 16-28 to bring on a period and begin fertility treatment. I was wicked nervous at first because I hate taking pills like WITH A PASSION and it was the biggest pill i've ever taken they're very large at least in my opinion. As soon as I took it I will admit it felt like it was gonna come back up for the first about 5 minutes but then I was fine. About 2 hours later EXTREME dizziness felt like I smoked weed for the first time all over again that lasted about a hour. Then fine! I also have extreme hunger which is good for me because i'm underweight and trying to gain. Give it a shot... F 21 12 days

2  HRT along with estrogen Severe anxiety, panic attacks, irritable, dry skin, itchy vagina, bladder pain Everytime I'd put on the creme my anxiety went through the roof. I'm already prescribed Xanax 1mg PRN but rarely take it but this did me in! I don't get any side effects from the estrogen only product but this was prescribed to get my hormones back to normal. At first, I didn't know what to think so kept taking it but then it got worse so I stopped. F 40 3 months

1  blood work showed low progesterone Dizziness, heavy limbs, headache, deep depression, hopelessness, constanr crying, suicidal thoughts, muscle spasms, severe panic attacks, sweating, paranoia. I had been suffering from daily long lasting migraines, and various other ailments, and my doctor decided to test my hormone levels. My progesterone was low for that time of my cycle, so I was prescribed 50mg daily. Within a couple of days i began feeling as if my body didn't belong to me. My skin was crawling, I was dizzy, I couldn't eat, my legs felt as if they were filled with sand. I kept getting muscle spasms/electric shocks in my forehead. It was awful. After 13 days, I found this website and saw these reviews and knew that I had to stop immediately. The days after I stopped were the worst of my life. At one point, I had an almost out of body experience, where I believe I would've killed myself had I not had a vision of my small child finding my dead body. I was moments away from taking a bottle of benadryl. After about a week, I began to start feeling a bit better. Less dizzy. More like my old self. I am now a little over a month out from stopping, and I am still feeling slight side effects, including anxiety and panic. My suggestion to any woman who has been advised to take this? Please, be careful. PLEASE. If you are currently taking it, and you feel yourself slipping into depression, get help immediately. I feel that it is worth mentioning that prior to progesterone I did suffer from occasional anxiety, panic attacks and pms. And I do have a history of depression. But never in all of these years have I felt as empty, hopeless and ready to die as I did with this dru F 38 2 weeks

1  Low levels Anxiety, insomnia, bloated, water retention, increased thirst, increased hunger, crying spells, moodiness, weight gain, increased hunger, hair loss, dry skin. PROGESTERONE CREAM IS A SCAM. I REPEAT. PROGESTERONE CREAM IS A SCAM. It has literally ruined my life and I only took it for 3 days! The people that say it works for them are either lying or delusional. Literally over night it caused 5lb weight gain, which I hope is only water weight...I can't fit into my jeans and my stomach is flabby. I'm so so tired and I've lost plenty of hair. I've been reading that it can take a few weeks for it to level out so I'm praying for a miracle right now. Please don't fall for this scam. How dare the promoters of this prey on people's misery for money. F 23 3 days

2  PMS - Perimenopause Nausea, foggy thinking, hot flashes, sweating, headache, depression, fatigue, difficulty swallowing I started taking Emerita ProGest 6 days ago...wish I never had!!! After a lot of research and reading that going with a higher dose will help you to NOT get the adverse symptoms of estrogen dominance I started using 100 mg in the morning and 100 mg at night. I was trying to ride it out like they say but oh my! I haven't been able to do much but lay on the couch! Can barely eat. Took less yesterday and only used 50 mg this morning, currently feeling better than I have in the last couple of day although still not normal. I think I'd rather deal with a bit of pre-period hot flashes and moodiness than endure these horrible side effects! The difficulty swallowing especially bothered me, isn't that like a bad reaction to any med?! F 43 6 days

1  Perimenopause 25 lb weight gain! Migraines, lower back and joint pain, emotional rollercoaster, sex drive GONE, insomnia, fatigue. Basically, it was a nightmare! was told my Progesterone was low by some bullshit naturopathic doctor. Struggled with this for two and half years. It wrecked my body. Screwed up my body's natural wiring. You develop this weird dependency on it, its hard to explain. Your afraid to stop taking it. Think about what happens to a women's body when she's pregnant. It's because her progesterone levels are crazy high. This is what it did to me - food cravings, massive weight gain, tiredness, horrible migraines, joint pain, emotional rollercoaster ride. It disturbs your body's natural order. There is a process that the female body goes through in aging, you have to roll with it! I recommend daily yoga outdoors as long as weather permits! Then bring it inside! My email is [email protected] if you need a friendly ear. :) F 50 2 years

3  Peri-menopausal hot flashes Since beginning Prometrium I have experienced terrible GERD (reflux). It has been debilitating. The progesterone is the only link between my stomach issues before and after treatment. I did quite a bit of research and found some, but little, facts linking oral progesterone supplements and reflux. I knew when I was pregnant (and had an increase of progesterone) that I experienced terrible reflux so it came to me one evening that perhaps the supplement was causing my current reflux. It has been two days since I discontinued the progesterone and my symptoms are much improved. I hope as the week goes along that I see continual improvement. The hot flashes are easier to deal with than the reflux! F 46 6 weeks

1  To get my period My DR prescribed progesterone because I was not getting my period. At first, I thought I was pregnant because I was late a month. I took 3 pregnancy tests and they all said negative so I decided to go see my DR. I had another pregnancy test done at the Drs office and it was negative so that's when I started taking progesterone pills. After the second day of taking the pills I started experience all the side effects: nausea, depression, cramps, extreme insomnia, extremely moody, emotionally a complete mess. I have never felt the way I did while taking these pills. Horrible! I would not recommended for anyone to take this. The reason I was not getting my period is because I was under a lot of stress at the time. I can honestly say that I rather have my period for three weeks than ever feel the way I felt. Emotionally I was a mess and physically I was always exhausted because in a total of about 3 days I was only able to sleep for no more than 5 hours. All I wanted to do was be in bed and cry . I hated not being able to be or feel like myself. I finally got my period and I'm starting to feel a bit better. I am having very bad cramps but I rather have cramps rather than feel depressed or cry all day. And I think it's rather hard for others to understand if they haven't been through the same thing. I've learned from this experience, to do research before taking anything. It can mess you up emotionally and physically. Although it did help me get my period, if this ever happens agai F 30 7 days

3  must take with vivelle dot/estrogen Drowsy, some general feelings of weakness, lower back pain, mild uterine cramps without menstruation, increased hot flashes. Reading the comments here, it sounds like I just stumbled into an emergency room in a war zone. I would remind readers that these reviews do not take into consideration any other ailments, disorders or medications - from these "reviews" I have no idea what progesterone is really actually doing or not doing to everyone else; just wanted to share my experience.
