2  IIH Terrible fatigue and no stamina, ferocious heartburn, overheat very quickly, can't be in the sun at all, occasional tingling of face/extremities especially in the cold, very elevated heart rate on standing, very painful intestinal cramps I feel utterly useless and housebound on this drug. There have been a few months that I went without this for financial reasons, and in that time I felt like a human being again. I feel like I'm going to catch on fire anywhere the sun touches me and navigating the stairs up to my apartment (which I've done for 20 years no problem) leaves me deeply exhausted. All the energy feels drained from every muscle in my body. The heartburn (which I am awake from currently at 4am) is intensely painful. I never had heartburn problems before this drug. Now if i bend over it feels like lava will come pouring from my chest. My pulse is normal when I've been off it, but immediately when I get back on it and throughout the duration of it, sometimes I will be standing quietly, leaning against something, and feel intensely faint and exhausted and my Fitbit will read heart rates anywhere from 120 to 140 until I sit down and it will rapidly normalize. While this drug seems to have done its job keeping my papilledema stable, it has been devastating on my mental health. I frequently can't function at a very basic level F 38 2 years

2  Altitude sickness Tingling in my hands and feet, constant urination, taste buds were off, tiredness, constant heartburn, brain fog, headache, upset stomach I have taken this 3 different times for altitude sickness on my trips. The first time I had only experienced tingling in my hands and feet and soda tasting off. The last two times have left me with headaches, tiredness, brain fog, frequent urination, and heartburn that will not stop! I would rather deal with the altitude sickness than these side effects.  1  Glaucoma Debilitating heartburn, tinnitus, blood pressure bottoming out, intense hand tingling, dizziness, drowsiness Intolerable side effects. I don't know if it had any effect on my ocular pressure, could not continue taking it until the next pressure measurement visit. M 65 3 days

4  IIH and paplidema Tingling that radiates around my body. Chest pain and weird heartbeat. Heartburn. Dry mouth. No carbonated beverages. Nausea upset stomach. Headaches worse when on period. Anxiety. Muscle spasms. It brought the swelling on my optic nerve down but i cant plan things bc everyday is a hit or miss. Sometimes i get this feeling i cant be on my feet anymore and i get dizzy and sick. Its just an overall bad experience but that could be everything. The heart feelings is what worries me most. Scared to work out bc of it which i need to to see if i can come off the meds but i cant even bend down without the swooshing sound in my ears and the feeling of to much pressure in my head. Ive had a lp done it was not pleasant i was in bed for 9 days following due to a spinal leak. The only plus is i am not at risk of going blind right now but that was after a year and a half on the meds. Hope this helps someone know they arent alone in how they feel. F 33 2 years

3  IIH/psuedotumor-cerebri nausea, diarrhea, burning on my feet and mouth, dry mouth and eyes, skin rash, easily sunburn, frequent urination, dizziness, weakness, shortness of breath, weight loss, loss of appetite, headaches, change in taste, ringing in ears, confusion at times, forgetfulness... This medication is awful. If it were not for the fact that I could go blind without it, I would not be taking it any longer. Side effects are severe for me. I think it is helping what I am taking it for but I keep questioning if it is worth it to go through such terrible side effects. F 21 3 weeks

3  IHH & Pallipodemea All the side effects: unbelievable brain fog and slowness, memory issues, anger, depression, confusion, never ending Severe and sudden diarrhea, shortness of breathe (pretty severe) with chest weighted feeling (like someone sitting on it), muscle pain and spasms after kneeling or crossing legs, tingling in arms, hands, knees, feet, toes, and unable to drink carbonated drinks, electrolytes issues headaches, insomnia I was treated with this on an ER basis after seeing an eye dr and my primary, along with an ER MRI due to pressure, ear popping and temporary blindness, among other things. No LP done at that time (Nov) started at 250mg 2ce a day for 2 weeks then to 500mg 2ce a day. Immediately has hard time catching my breathe. But my Vision improved in January, no sign of pallipodemea seen. Neuro ordered LP for Feb and had me wean back off. Within 10 minutes of the LP my ears started popping again, and have not stopped since, in spite of taking my pressure down to 13cc. Went back to the opthomologist and slight pressure is barely seen again. Now Back up to 500mg x2 and my brain fog is back with a vengeance, and my pressure seems to have gotten worse since the LP. Have been on 2500mg of B12 since Dec to help, it doesn't help the brain fog, now prescribed potassium which also hasn't helped the tingles. I do Vit D, Iron for anemia, 1000 mg of vit C (per neuro) zinc and multi vit. I do NOT feel much better except I can MOSTLY see. Neuro Dr told me "it's a water pill so it should not be causing the brain fog or confusion". Well, tell that to my work when I was off the meds for 2 weeks my productivity was almost the level it was prior to the meds. Now it's almost at half. I hate this med, but I suppose if you like feeling stupid, angry, and sad ALL the time, vs going blind then it's worth it. F 39 6 months

3  Glaucoma eye pressure Fatigue, out of breath on minimal exertion, pee all the time, lowered potassium levels, nausea, no appetite, rapid heart rate and slow heart rate, BP all over the place but mostly low, tingly hand, feet and face several times a day, flaky, peeling skin, stomach ache, cold extremeties Some of the many side effects improved after a few weeks as I presume your own body compensates at different rates. Don't think that patient leaflet is detailed enough about the side effects or what can be done to help lessen them if experienced. I tried to hydrate myself as before but just made me pee out more faster. Also found drinking warm drinks including water seemed to help in slowing down the need to wee as often and not drinking as much fluid as I used to but we are all different F 63 1 months

4  Idiopathic intracranial hypertensio Nausea (first week) tingles in limbs, extreme thirst, tired, insomnia, joint pains and stiffness, heat intolerant, chest pains, frequently urinating, headaches at times. I started it and boy oh boy the side affects are definitely horrible but it immediately took my pressure away. Was told by my pharmacist to start low to reduce side affects so I split my 250 in half took 2 times a day. Now I take 3/4 to times a day. I developed tachycardia before I started this medication but not sure if it helps that any. I get cold feet and developed a uti while taking it. I noticed I was clenching my jaw at times so I started breathing threw my mouth more. For nausea I was sucking on these this called preggie pops (not pregnant) but they really help. I eat a banana in the morning drink lots of water and don't forget to eat some protein I was noticing my fingernails changing and found out I was lacking protein. I'm not saying this is a miracle drug because it's a bit annoying with all the side affects but I keep telling myself this or the shunt. I do not want the shunt at all. So yes it helps but takes time to tolerate just make sure you eat potassium and proteins and drink vitamin water or something with electrolytes gaterade had too much sugar for me and tons of water. Also told not to take to close to bed so I wake up less to urinate and that has helped. I do get neck stiffness and aches but I keep pushing for the better only time will tell F 31 2 weeks

5  IIH In the beginning I would get tingling in my feet and hands and shortness of breath when taking long walks and would feel fatigued. I'm on month 6 and I Occasionally get tingling in finger tips when cold no more fatigue. Just started getting silent acid reflux not sure if it's connected. The side effects are very minimal and I'm thankful for that. I'm praying I'll be done taking in June on next follow up . F 36 0 days

3  Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertensio Almost every side effect listed has happened nausea, pins and needles, stomach pain, headaches, loss of appetite, vomiting, feeling faint, fatigue, heart palpitations, heartburn, taste alteration, diarrhoea acne, dry mouth (which is causing dental issues), thirst, confusion, ataxia and even the sensitivity to UV rays. I'm giving it a 3 because while it eases my pressure it's leaving me in so much discomfort that I just want to crawl into a hole and die. It's not exactly rainbows and unicorns but because of the pandemic it's currently the only option until I can get my shunt sorted out. F 24 6 months

3  Pseudotumor cerebri Tingling feet and hands, tingling jaw-around mouth area and lips, nausea, feeling like shortness of breath although pulse oximeter says 99%, blood pressure gets high, blood sugar gets DRAMATICALLY LOW, blurry vision, slight pain in back, diarrhea like symptoms (at times) sleepy/tired, dont want to leave the bed I try to eat a banana and/or avocado everyday to combat possible potassium issues. I also drink about about 60-90 oz of water and a half bottle of Gatorade a day to combat the possible lack of electrolytes. I pray to God they find a cure for this thing or at the least a waaaaaaaay better medicine. F 44 3 weeks

DIAMOX  (ACETAZOLAMIDE):  Acetazolamide is used to prevent and reduce the symptoms of altitude sickness. This medication can decrease headache, tiredness, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath that can occur when you climb quickly to high altitudes (generally above 10,000 feet/3,048 meters). It is particularly useful in situations when you cannot make a slow ascent. The best ways to prevent altitude sickness are climbing slowly, stopping for 24 hours during the climb to allow the body to adjust to the new height, and taking it easy the first 1 to 2 days. This drug is also used with other medications to treat a certain type of eye problem (open-angle glaucoma). Acetazolamide is a "water pill" (diuretic). It decreases the amount of fluid that can build up in the eye. It is also used to decrease a buildup of body fluids (edema) caused by congestive heart failure or certain medications. Acetazolamide can work less well over time, so it is usually used only for a short period. It has also been used with other medications to treat certain types of seizures (petit mal and unlocalized seizures).   (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)
