SUMATRIPTAN SUCCINATE  (SUMATRIPTAN SUCCINATE):  Sumatriptan is used to treat migraines and cluster headaches. It helps to relieve pain and other symptoms of migraines/headaches including sensitivity to light or sound, nausea, and vomiting. Prompt treatment allows you to get back to your normal routine and may decrease your need for other pain medications. It does not prevent future migraines/headaches or reduce how often you may get a headache. Sumatriptan belongs to a group of drugs called triptans. It affects a certain natural chemical (serotonin) that constricts blood vessels in the brain. It may also block other pain pathways in the brain.   FDA Approval Date: 2009-09-18 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  Migraines All ear-related side effects. Bed felt like it jiggled, frequent tinnitus at both high and low frequency, pain in eardrum when I pop my ear (like when I yawn), and the worst side effect that made me stop this medicine is the very loud screeching hallucination I experienced upon waking. It did help with migraines if I took it early enough. Also I believe it suppressed my appetite which was not a bad side effect for me. If it weren't for the ear side effects, I would have kept taking it. My mother has vertigo so it's possible I'm prone to ear complications. F 34 60 days

5  Status Migrainosus None that I am aware of at this time. I was suffering from severe migraines that lasted for months due to a head injury I received in an automobile accident. I was in severe pain and I had never had a severe migraine before, I had no idea how terribly awful they can be and I was put on a strong opioid to help me, which barely scratched the surface in relieving the pain when it was moderate and did nothing for the severe pain. My first neurologist suspected tension headaches, he was clearly not listening to me because I could not be in any light for several days at a time, no one could touch me, even gently, without increasing the pain and even sounds made outside my home would also increase the pain terribly. My new neurologist informed me that I was suffering from ongoing migraines and prescribed this medicine that changed my life. I am very grateful to her and this drug for helping me. It either eradicates the pain or greatly reduces it. I highly recommend trying this drug to help manage migraines. I took it every day for a week, but my neurologist said not to take the recommended dosage (two in a 24 hour period, the first only at signs of a severe headache and the second two hours after the first only if headache has not gone away) more than 3 days a week. She said using it more may trigger rebound headaches, so make sure you speak to your doctor about frequency of usage. F 33

5  migraine (abortive) nothing bad. I little tired 30-60 mins after taking, but subsides a bit. Heavy arms. Kind of a tired spaced out, but not bad. Positive far outways side effects. Works good. Most of the time one pill works to abort. 25% of the time I have to take 2. M 42 4 years
