METOPROLOL SUCCINATE  (METOPROLOL SUCCINATE):  This medication is a beta-blocker used to treat chest pain (angina), heart failure, and high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. This drug works by blocking the action of certain natural chemicals in your body (such as epinephrine) that affect the heart and blood vessels. This lowers heart rate, blood pressure, and strain on the heart.   FDA Approval Date: 2007-05-18 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  High blood pressure Swelling of hands and feet, nightmares, poor sleep-about 2 to 3 hours at a time, serious fatigue, frequent palpitations and chest tightness, achy joints and bone tenderness, tinnitus, difficulty losing weight, constipation. Went off this drug for a while and felt much better. Tried it again because of hbp, but stopped, as I can't tolerate the symptoms. Rash and itching returned which I forgot to mention, along with the other symptoms, so I have stopped it again. No current doctor to speak to! Will try to lower my bp by natural means. I could not take the palpitations. I'll see what my next doc recommends! F 72 1 years

1  Afib I don't know how I've stuck it out this long. Started at 50 mg once a day then cut back to 25mg once a day. Horrible side effects...major headaches, SOB, chest pressure, blurred vision, jittery, hear pounding and palpitations, low heart rate, insomnia, anxiety and more. Want to try something else just not sure which one. Any suggestions out there? Anybody on atenolol? Read some good reviews on it. Willing to try anything to get off of this crap. Dr. is suggesting Cardizem CD next. Anyone using this one that can shed some light on it? Metoprolol supposed to be for high blood pressure and heart rate but PCP says I don't have high blood pressure and it's been terrible keeping my heart rate in check. Always low which I hate the feeling. HELP!!! F 71 5 months

1  A-Fib Low heart rate, nausea sweating heart palpitations/irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, no energy, dizzy, cold hands/feet, insomnia, anxiety Metoprolol was like a poison, left me lethargic with no quality of life. So I changed my cardiologist who had refused to adjust the medication. PCP prescribed an ER calcium blocker (100% turnaround), which controls my A-Fib better. I feel pretty good & have a better outlook on life. You know your body & how you feel....get another doctor if your current one isn't listening to you. Best wishes, be well. F 67 3 weeks

3  High Blood Pressure-PVC's Been on this medication for almost 5 years- I never had side effects till recently - now I'm just tired 24/7 -no matter how much sleep I get- starting to think it's metropolol- I have brain fog and way too much fatigue a it's just hard to function like this - asking doc to lower dose or switch to something else - works great for PVC'S - and AFIB - so it's hard to go off if it F 71 4 years

2  HBP Fatigue. Chest tightness. Blurry vision. Hair lost. Poor appetite. Nausea. Ringing in ears. Breathing issues. Palpitations. It is almost impossible to exercise and be active while on this drug. This drug makes me feel tired all day. No energy at all. My heart will beat from time to time during the day even when I'm sitting down. Wake up at night and can't go back to sleep. I'm not the one to write reviews about medications but this drug is not working for me. I will ask my doctor to take me off during my next visit. M 49 20 days

1  Hypertension and tachycardia Nausea, Dizziness, Anxiety, Extreme tiredness, low energy. I suffer from Generalized Anxiety disorder and the Dr told me a beta blocker would also help with my anxiety and panic attacks. It hasn't helped at all. It's increased the anxious feeling. I'm so tired all of the time but can't sleep because the anxiety keeps me awake. I hate it. I just wish we could find something that would work instead of making me feel worse. F 44 7 days

1  Migraine Reynaud's, breathing problems, chest pain, extreme weight loss, heightened anxiety, brain fog, loss of concentration, sleep problems, and the list goes on.  1  High blood pressure Intense itching, rash, tingling in face, tinnitus worse After a few months of taking this , I have such intense itching its driving me up a wall. Mostly on my back , sides and scalp. Nothing I do helps. Nurse that prescribed this says it isn't the med but I read where it can be a side effect. My lips feel numb and tingly. This is horrible, I don't want to take this anymore but I also have reactions to some BP meds so not sure what to do now. Depression is also worsening. F 71 5 months

1  High blood pressure Burning legs, arms and shoulders, swelling all over, tinnitus, shortness of breathe, sinus swelling and congestion, acid reflux, blurry vision, cold hands and feet Shortness of breathe resulted in multiple ER visits.  1  Arrhythmia/Hypertrophic Cardiomyopa Chest tightness. Extreme shortness of breath. Constant sweating. Blurred vision. Anxiety. Irritability. Fatigue. Angina. Depression. Nightmares. Insomnia. Weight gain. Distended abdomen and bloating. Constipation. Diarrhea. Mentally unwell feeling all the time. What got me most was the shortness of breath. Several times of day and it would wake me up. It was frightening. Felt as if I was trapped or drowning. I had no symptoms when my (severe) hypertrophic cardiomyopathy was diagnosed. Outside of the murmur my doctor came across at my well woman visit. My echocardiogram found the heart disease. Mine is congenital. This medication has turned my life upside down. Being diagnosed was bad enough. Especially since it's advanced and is severe. I was told side effect of this med are rare. I'm sorry, but I'd rather be able to breathe than take this med. Losing your breath while simply sitting still is literally the scariest thing I've been through. F 46 3 months
