METHENAMINE HIPPURATE  (METHENAMINE HIPPURATE):  Methenamine is used to prevent or control returning urinary tract infections caused by certain bacteria. It is not used to treat an active infection. Other antibiotics must be used first to treat and cure the infection. Methenamine is an antibiotic that stops the growth of bacteria in urine. This medication also contains an ingredient that helps to make the urine acidic. When the urine is acidic, methenamine turns into formaldehyde to kill the bacteria. This antibiotic is effective only against bacterial infections in the urinary tract. It will not work for other types of bacterial infections (such as in the blood) or for viral infections (such as the common cold or flu).  5  chronic UTI prevention Nothing. Blue/green urine as expected. This is so far the only drug that has actually solved anything for me and my myriad of medical problems for the last 5-10 years. Within a month I could see I wasn't getting the constant UTIs (cycling with vaginal yeast infection) I kept suffering with for some 3 years to that point. Been to plain urologist (who said I must have interstitial cystitis) and gynecologist, then found a combo urogyn, who also played around for a while, treating symptoms as they come (like, every 2 weeks?). In '17 he finally told me to try this daily. It's been a God-send. I was concerned I had a UTI once in this time, and that's all. Wish all my other problems found a solution like this. F 48 1 years
