| 5 | Chronic constipation | Diarrohea, slight cramps and nausea. | I suffer with quite bad constipation and can go a full week without going to the toilet. I was prescribed Lactulose a few months ago but hadn't taken it. I had a flare up of constipation and felt a lot of discomfort in my abdomen and sluggish so I took one single dose of Lactulose. About an hour later I started to get nausea which made me take one of my antisickness tablets and then another 3 hours later I got gurgling in my stomach and had to run to the toilet. I had bad diarrohea for the following couple of hours but felt a lot better from it. It says on the bottle that it takes 48 hours to work but this was not the case for me! I realise I have to wait a couple of days but still no bowel movement. I had my last bowel movement 3 days ago with the strong laxatives I have been using for years. I wanted to switch to something less harmful since I regularly used to take strong laxatives for many years. However, the problem for me is that I started taking this the next day (friday) after my last bowel movement on Thursday. Today is Sunday and even though I took a strong laxative on Saturday night (upon doctors advice) I have still not had a bowel movement which I normally used to have the next morning after taking this strong laxative at night. Also I am unable to eat properly since I started this lactulose syrup. The lack of appetite nauseous feeling and the worst is the bloated feeling in my abdomen which does not make me able to eat properly since I am always feeling very bloated and full. I am really at my wits end since I realise this is a very slow acting laxative but since I took my strong laxative last night which usually works and I am still not having any bowel movement I am feeling very dissatisfied. By the time I get home in the evening, I have no urge to go. In a few days, I am bloated and very uncomfortable. The doctor told me to start at one tablespoon after breakfast and gradually increase the dosage so that my bowel movement urge was so powerful that it would be absolutely impossible to ignore or forget a daily bowel movement and then to stay at that dosage indefinitely. I found that, for me, that point was 6 tablespoons. Lactulose is funny stuff. When you take it and for several hours afterwards, it is though you have not taken it. Then, very gradually a bloated feeling develops. There is continual gurgling feelings. The bloated feeling becomes quite noticeable and you feel sensations of an impending bowel movement which actually does not happen for an hour or two. By the time a bowel movement arrives, there is an overwhelming, irresistible, panicky urge that you can in no way ignore for more than 30 minutes. I've had some close calls with the bathroom when I was driving my car or away from a toilet for some reason. You'll definitely be regular every day if you take lactulose. The lactulose acts as an artificial sweetener and when added to the bran it tastes a lot better and seems to do a better job of "bulking" than taken by itself.
