1  Allergic reaction Horrible restless legs type symptoms that made me have suicidal ideations. I was so tired and half asleep, felt drunk, but couldn't sleep because of the "twitching," as I call it. All antihistamines and muscle relaxers have the same effect on me. F 29 1 times

1  Runny Nose/Congestion from cold Jitteriness, restlessness/fidgety, numbness on skin, insomnia, increased heart rate, chest tightness, anxiety, panic attacks Advised to take Benadryl for post nasal drip from a bad cold. Immediately I felt my mood change and became jittery, restless, anxious, panicky, and could not sleep. I felt jacked up - like I had taken a stimulant. I could not feel anything on my skin. Awful experience for me. Everyone's reaction is different. F 57 2 days

1  Insomnia EXTREME anxiety, paranoia, restless legs, aching joints, uncontrollable twitches, racing heart, tremors, and irrational fear. I'd taken this for insomnia before and was fine and worked great! No problems but the last 2 days have been hell. I feel like I'm going insane! feel like I can't breath deeply or get enough air into my lungs. A paranoid hyper awareness that goes hand in hand with the irrational fear of death that has never been present before. Never ever ever again. F 26 3 days

1  Allergies Restless legs, nightmares, fatigue next day I took this for about 4-5 days in a row for allergies because my nose gets stuffed up when I try to sleep. It gave me really bad restless legs, it did help me sleep better but I had nightmares, and it made me very tired the following days after taking it (one 30 mg dose before bed). I also noticed my allergies seemed a lot worse the following day(s), headache, sinus, dry eyes - but one kept watering for hours, and I felt almost depressed. I also woke with ear pain and could feel liquid in my ears about to come out when I'd wake up. I think it was draining my sinuses at night (so clearing my nose so I could breath) but the drainage was causing other problems. I usually take nothing for my allergies and now I remember why. I won't be taking this anymore. Maybe I'll try some natural remedies if needed, occasionally. F 45 5 days

1  Insomnia I have been taking diphenhydramine for years with no serious problems. However, as I got more dependent on the drug and built up more intolerance I needed to take more for the drowsy effects to work. There's a reason the bottle advises AGAINGST taking it long term! I have OCD and it made my anxiety and OCD worse; I started hallucinating transparent spiders (once hallucinated rats and scorpions that looked real); restless legs; itchy; violent thoughts and urges about others. I have decided to quit taking this after the latest violent though side effect. Not worth it. A few times I had a sense of impending doom and feared that I was going to have a heart attack or die in my sleep. Definitely increases depression beyond "normal" levels as well as suicidal thoughts. Occasionally I l also had short term amnesia that lasted until the next day (forgetting words, not remembering what I was going to do next.) please do not abuse this drug! You don't want to end up hurting yourself or others and the paranoia and constant fear of dying is totally not worth it. It's best to speak with your doctor; although all meds have side effects you've got to decide if the results outweigh the bad. I used to think they did for me with this drug but now don't.  1  Cold/ sleep aid Bradycardia (very low pulse) chest pressure, head pressure, extreme anxiety, panic attack, restless legs, and it made the insomnia worse. I had been suffering from a cold and insomnia so I took the recommended dosage of Benadryl. Had taken it in the past and it didn't seem to be a problem. This time was different. My pulse which is usually on the fast side, slowed way down. I felt dizzy and anxious and 10x worse than before I took it. I will never take it again. I'd rather be sick and not sleep then go through this nightmare! F 34 2 days

4  Allergies/Insomnia drowsiness, restless legs, feeling heavy in the morning I usually take a benadryl at night because I have terrible insomnia and severe allergies to boot! It lowers my histamine level very effectively while I sleep, so in the morning my eyes aren't totally crusted over. I find that I have to work on being relaxed before I take the pill in order for it to be sedative. If i'm not sufficiently chilled out, it can lead to some serious restless leg syndrome and "excitability" as they say on the package. It often hits like a ton of bricks, especially if you take two, and then you know it's time to pass out. If I ignore this sensation and stay up anyway, I find that I'm totally unable to get to sleep and the excitability sets in. So chill out, take it, and be ready to go to sleep! F 25 5 years

3  Allergies and Insomnia Severe Anxiety Restlessness Extreme Irratibility Higher Heart Rate Sometimes a low body temperature Headaches Up and Down Mood I've gone through everything I've been taking (most of which are all OTC dieatary supplements) and i'm pretty sure Benadryl is causing these side effects. I'm only 21, i'm not a female (so it isn't PMS or whatever) and i'm otherwise a pretty relaxed person (off this medicine) It has helped me sleep, but often i wake up way to energetic and full of nervous and anxious energy. I would really be cautious of taking this drug for a long period of time and especially if you have experienced anxiety beforehand, this may magnify it. M 21 2 years

2  insomnia RLS, jitters, nervousness, dry mouth. Everyone reacts different, I am one of the people who has an adverse reaction to benadryl. It does the opposite. The jitters are so brutal for me. The only thing that benadryl works for is an allergy attack and hives. God bless the people that use this for insomnia and it works. It is the safest sleep aid for insomnia and if it works fo you that is good because the prescription aids can lead to a whole host of problems. If I were to take one before bed, you could count on me being up the whole night kicking my sheets until dawn. M 42 4 days

1  Allergies, Insomnia Severe anxiety, panic attacks, depression, restlessness I took Benadryl because I have very bad allergies and it usually helps me sleep too. Yet, as I started to take it on a daily basis I noticed many serious adverse effects. I took it right before bed and it would initially knock me out, yet an hour or so later (usually when my boyfriend came to bed) I would wake up in a full on disoriented panic attack. If you are prone to anxiety I would NOT take this medication. Try allergy shots, if possible. F 21 2 years

3  Allergies/Urticaria First there was drowsiness, obviously. Within 20 min. my allergic rxns were significantly relieved. When taken daily for 3 years in correct dosage I began feeling anxious, occassional loss of apetite, dehydrated, dry mouth, dry eyes dry skin (general dryness everywhere), cold hands/feet, anxiety, palpitations, feeling of irregular heartbeat, muscle relaxation, blurred vision. When taken in excess for the remaning years I experienced hallucinations, skin rash, sensaitons of heat in chest, skin, restlessness, insomnia, feeling jittery, nausea, occasional cyanosis, acid reflux, blurry vision, dream-disturbed sleep. I'm writing a review because I can identify the ins and outs of Benadryl taken with normal dose, excessive dosages, as well as with long-term use; and I have enough experience with the drug to attribute the side-effects I've listed to just this drug. I started taking Benadryl 7 years ago, due to severe allergies to everything. I haven't gone a day without it (one day and the allergies would flare up). I am now up to 20 pills a day...woah, slow down now...due to my addictive personality; properties of the drug itself may or may not be addictive. F 22 7 years
