LO LOESTRIN FE  (ETHINYL ESTRADIOL; NORETHINDRONE ACETATE):  This combination hormone medication is used to prevent pregnancy. It contains 2 hormones: norethindrone (a progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen). It works mainly by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation) during your menstrual cycle. It also makes vaginal fluid thicker to help prevent sperm from reaching an egg (fertilization) and changes the lining of the uterus (womb) to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg. This product also contains a small amount of iron (ferrous fumarate) in inactive tablets taken during the fourth week. The inactive pills do not contain any hormones. These tablets are meant to keep you in the habit of taking 1 tablet each day and do not have enough iron to treat iron deficiency. Besides preventing pregnancy, birth control pills may make your periods more regular, decrease blood loss and painful periods, decrease the risk of ovarian cysts, and also treat acne. Using this medication does not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases (such as HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia).   FDA Approval Date: 2010-10-21 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Painful menstrual cramps I started talking Lo Loestrin Fe my first semester of freshman year in college, and when I first started taking it I had no side effects except for irregular periods. The medicine cleared up my acne, reduced menstrual cramps, and made my periods a lot lighter, so “medically” it was effective. However, after taking it for a while I noticed that I started missing periods for months at a time, and I was gradually developing anxiety and depression. I didn’t think much of it because missing periods is “normal” on birth control pills, and at first I thought the anxiety and depression was just from the stress of college, but as time went on I became so anxious and depressed that I was no longer interested in any of my classes, I was having a lot of trouble focusing no matter how hard I tried, I was tired all the time and I couldn’t sleep, and I lost all interest for my extracurricular activities. My first semester of college I finished with a GPA of 3.622 I also had a lot of trouble with loneliness, and I became extremely dependent on my parents and clingy with my boyfriend, which was abnormal for me because I am a very independent person. Luckily, I was able to put it together that the way I was feeling wasn’t because of the stress of college, IT WAS BECAUSE OF LO LOESTRIN FE. We talked to my doctor and they told me to immediately stop taking the pills. After researching the medicine I learned that SO many other girls have experienced the same thing as I did. But, after a month of being off the pill I am back to normal, and I am happy as can be and loving my classes again. So if you’re experiencing the symptoms I described above, I encourage you, DO NOT GIVE UP!! It WILL get better after you stop taking the pills, even though it doesn’t feel like it. I called my parents crying so many times because I never thought I was going to get back to normal. But you WILL get better, just push through! Find strength in those who love and care about you, surround yourself with the people who love you, and don’t quit going out and doing the things you enjoy, it helps!! I do not recommend Lo Loestrin Fe to anyone, because while it’s effective medically, it almost cost me my whole college career and future because of the mental/hormonal side effects. I am SO glad that I didn’t choose to drop out of college or quit the clubs/activities that I enjoy, because now I’m back and better than ever. F 18 5 months

4  Birth control I switched from Nuvaring to LoLoestrin FE. Way better so far, although I'm just ending my first month. I had mild headaches in the first week or so, some tiredness and have some bloating. BUT I just started dieting two weeks ago and have had no issues losing weight. I did have a little bleeding last week but am about to start the white pills, so I expect I'll have a full on period on those. This week my weight is back to pre-weight loss (6pds), BUT it is obvious is is water weight and that is expected for the period week on the white pills. Amazed at how many bad reviews there are. I love these pills so far! Nuvaring was terrible! F 42 0 days

2  Heavy periods, cramps, pregnancy In the short time I've taken this medication I have experienced extreme hunger, waking up 2 to 3 times a night and it taking hours to get back to sleep, which makes me extremely tired the next day, and hair loss. I will no longer be taking this medication. I have extremely thick hair and I have noticed an excessive amount of hair loss n even a bald spot. F 26 2 weeks

1  Dr switched my birth control Continuous headaches, blurred vision, daily mood swings Don't take this birth control. Dr's push it because it's a cheaper kind. Side effects are immediate and not worth it. Worst b.c. I've ever been on. F 29 2 months

1  Heavy period I've been on Lo Loestrin Fe for almost 2 1/2 years. I began experiencing anxiety and HBP ...started taking both Lexapro & HBP medicine. Additionally, I've gained about 30lbs. I had no idea about these type of side effects until I had to discover it on my own...I'm disappointed my Dr. didn't share any information on side effect. I knew I would expect weight gain, but not this severe. I'm especially disappointed my anxiety kicked into high gear the last two years plus the high blood pressure. It has not been fun. I would not recommend this. Please do your research if your dr. doesn't provide much information. F 45 2 years

2  Prevent pregnancy Extreme bloating, bathroom issues, back pain, nausea, fatigue, anxiety and depression increase, slight weight gain, swollen breast Was hoping that being on the lowest dose would help to have minimal side effects. Not the case. After the 2nd pill I was tired all the time, always feel sick and depressed. Bloated like crazy. My lower back had had a dull pain the entire time I've been taking this pill. I have some bad mood swings. Ugh, I'm just not happy with it and don't see the point on staying on a medication that makes me feel so miserable when I have made no lifestyle changes to contribute to this negatively and I used to feel so great before hand. I feel like I have no control over my body. F 27 5 weeks

2  Fibroid tumors causing heavy period Fatigued and tired every day. Increase in anxiety. I'm really in a quandary here. Before Lo Loestrin FE, heavy periods ruled my life along with anemia, and really bad PMS. I always felt that I had about 1 good week out of the month to hurry and get things done. Now, after 2 years, Lo Loestrin has taken care of the heavy periods and anemia, but I am extremely tired all the time. I've gone from planning around heavy periods to planning around fatigue. Just reading the other comments has at least brought a little comfort in knowing I'm not just lazy and becoming a hermit for no reason. I feel that I have a low level of anxiety constantly running, and find it difficult even plan to get with people or just regular errands because I feel I will pay for it the next day or two. Its just easier to stay home and just manage the house/ family. I don't work outside the home, so I can't even imagine trying to work at a job! At this point, I'm praying/ deciding what to do. I don't want to live this way until I reach menopause. M 48 2 years

4  Endometriosis At first I had horrible mood swings, suicidal thoughts (not super unusual for me), weird headaches, stomach pain and a hard time sleeping. I am SO GLAD I listened to my Dr. and stuck it out because now the ONLY side effect I am experiencing is zero libido. I guess that's how birth control works. It makes you not interested at all in sex and BAM...you don't get pregnant. Sneaky, sneaky. Saved my life. Having zero Endo symptoms. THANK YOU!!! F 29 75 days

1  Birth control Severe stomach pains/cramping, vomiting, loose stool, spotting between periods. A week or so after starting this drug, I began to get stomach pains (infrequent at first, maybe once a week). I have now been taking it for 7 weeks and have been violently ill three times in the past two weeks. This past week alone, I experienced the severe stomach pains 6 of 7 days (always at the same time each day). Had to finally go to the Dr, and have had blood tests done (currently waiting results). Decided after doing research to stop taking the pill (today was first day off it - and I was not sick). As such, this rating is not conclusive but I am hoping as the days go on and I remain off the pill that this indeed was the culprit (as I had started with eliminating potential food aggravators, etc - with no luck). Please note, I have been on many different pills over the past 15 years (on a progesterone only pill after my first child, tried this one after my second - am currently 3 months postpartum). Looks like hubby will need to book that vasectomy sooner than expected... F 31 7 weeks

1  PMS symptoms Severe cramps, heavy bleeding, back pain, headaches Worst back pain I have ever experienced aside from giving birth. I had to miss work for the back pain and headaches. I couldn't fathom "hanging in there" for 3 months to see if it subsided. I was trying to improve my PMS symptoms and this made it much, much worse. Stopping today and pray the effects wear off soon.... F 37 10 days

1  precaution not to get pregnant My obgyn prescribed me this type of birth control six weeks after i had my 4th baby. I have alot side effects from previous birth control usage. Only on this birth control for 3 months til i can get my tubual ligation done at theend of the summer. So i began to take this birth control yesterday at 3:45pm for the first time on the second day woke up with severe stomach pain, cramping, diarrhea. All three sypmtoms wont subsided. Rather just have my tubual ligation done early than deal with these side effects for the next three months. F 25 2 days

2  Birth control Have been taking it for a week now and I am writing this after my frustration for being awake at this point for 27 hours straight and I am absolutely wired. I've never had sleeping problems before. I have night sweats and cry at the most random things. Major mood swings and very irritable. Could be because of the lack of sleep though. F 25 9 days

5  severe cramps/vomiting w/period Stopped menstruating (some mild cramps &/or spotting every few months). After being off the medication for a month, my periods came back. Unfortunately, so did the debilitating cramps, vomiting, & diarrhea. My doctor took me off it because he's worried about high cholesterol, but this is the only medicine that allowed me to function (tried OTC pain meds, Ponstel, & Vicodin). I am once again out of sick days & options. F 40 2 years

1  Ovarian Cyst Headaches, Nausea, Depression, Anxiety, Breast Tenderness, Loss of Balance, Night sweats, trouble sleeping, Anger, Sadness, Confusion.. I trusted my doctor to make a good choice considering she is aware of my history with depression and high risk of cancer. Instead she gave me the worst possible option. I stopped taking it a week ago and I still have night sweats, I can't sleep, i cry for no reason, i don't want to have sex, i have low tolerance for my children.. this is horrible. i hate it and i was forced to find a new OBGYN.  2  heavy periods and cramping Extreme bloating, sore breasts, constipation, instant increase in appetite (and subsequent weight gain), cramps, sore lower back, nausea. This was supposed to be a low dose pill and I thought I'd have less side effects. Instead it just makes me feel horrible. It stopped my spotting but at the expense of all the side effects I'm not satisfied and have decided not to stick it out the three months. F 37 1 weeks
