1  Anxiety and depression Felt good then within minutes tingling hands and terrible nausea. I even had a genetics test and it said I was a poor metabolizer for this drug. Psychiatrist gave a low dose but still stopped it . After reading posts its not worth it. I would recommend anyone to get a genetics test especially if sensitive . I have ended up in ER 3 times because of drugs and a behavior inpatient hospital I admitted myself for drug interactions. F 61 1 days

5  Depression/anxiety No sex drive. On 150mg dosage, seemed unable to produce tears (cry). Only the XR seems to work for me. I was given the regular (non-extended-release once and I noticed right away). My DO was not the prescribing physician for this drug. I was having difficulties with another drug but she suggested quitting "EffexorXR" like it was a piece of cake. Even being late taking this one causes me "zaps" (a weird electric sensation in my head). However, it keeps me on an even keel and I would never want to be completely off it. I decided to try a half-dose instead of the 150mg I'd been on all this time. I didn't notice any dip in mood or outlook at all--and my behavior was unchanged. The only difference seemed to be that I could cry again. My DO wanted to try me on different meds because she thought this one was causing too fast a heart rate. I didn't believe she had any idea about venlafaxine or any other drug and didn't feel like letting her experiment on me. I'm very satisfied with this drug and I like the lower dose. M 64 15 years

5  Depression anxiety Dry mouth. This drug gave me my life back. I had been severely depressed, barely able to function, and had suicidal thoughts daily. Many friends commented that l was myself again. After 5 years I'm wondering if it is as effective as it was at first, but don't want to risk not taking it. F 67 5 years

1  Depression with Anxiety Headache-fatigue-very lazy-dizziness-hungry or not hungry-moody-insomnia at night-tired in the day-weak-muscle weakness-not wanting to exercise-more headaches-horny-more depressed-angry zombie man I was taking Setraline/Clonazepam combo for over a few years and noticed the Setraline stopped working as good. So my Dr. said to try Effexor XR and I did for about a month and it sucked. Lots of headaches and felt very tired and moody. I decided to start taking the 50mg of Zoloft again and I almost feel 100% better since. Not sure about SNRI meds. I think the SSRI's work better for me. Good Luck! M 43 4 weeks

4  depression none unless it was possibly increased depression/anxiety toward the end of the time of use. I started venlafaxine er dec 2014. dosage increased from then until now from 150 to 225/day. I am on here to NEGATE that this is a horrible drug or has a HORRIBLE withdrawal. If you will read the literature, 5% of people have difficulty coming off this drug. I had no problems except a buzzing when I turned my head for a couple of days. I stopped taking it 7 days ago b/c it was no longer (not sure it ever was) effective. I was in the bottom of the pit again and not willing to be there again. I feel so much better. Physically and mentally. Do not believe all the horror stories on here about w/d. Sure it's a true fact there are people with problems stopping it. ALWAYS do this with practitioner on board, okay? Don't cold turkey this. That's when people get in trouble. Thanks. F 57 1 years

4  Depression Sexual side effects, less desire for sex, hard to get orgasm. Help very good against my major depression after ECT-treatments. The dosage is very high, so I have to check my blood pressure regularly. M 37 10 years

1  Borderline Personality Disorder Brain confusion, forgetfulness, cannot make decisions, fatigue, weight gain, struggle to process information, panic, suicidal thoughts,Hyperhydrosis, lengthy low episodes, inability to focus or concentrate, restlessness, discharge of milk substance from nipples although not pregnant. I was told these are all quite normal & that I should just keep increasing dosage. I don't believe these are normal side effects & so have recently requested a change of Psychiatrist. I believe after taking these meds I have just been stuck in a void of not experiencing life - I refuse to self harm as my uncle hung himself & I witnessed the devastation it caused the family but what people don't really understand is I live in that same devastation because I am not well & the support is minimal especially for those with BPD as many psychiatrists don't perceive those with BPD as treatable.  1  depression All the usual. Impossible to stop without terrible side effects. Would never recommend taking it. Worst nightmares I've ever had, continuing off and on over the 5 years. I have to change to something else. I have given this drug a fair trial!! Dr's should tell you that you can get this side effect. F 5 years

4  depression took a while to adjust, maybe 3-4 months before my sex drive returned and started feeling feelings again. I plateaued twice which is how i ended up on such a high dose. I have been stable on 300mg for 6 or more years. only remaining side effects are poor heat tolerance/sweating and urinary hesitancy, which is worth it for staying out of major depressive cycle Got dx with ADHD at age 23 and the addition of stimulant (adderall) to antidepressant was a life changer. I am happy with this medication and have no plans to go off. The biggest issue is a missed dose aka withdrawal. Probably not so bad on a low dose but absolute hell for me: nightmares, dizzy, zombified x1000 F 28 9 years

4  depression, anxiety Before starting I was having severe depression & bad mood swings. Went off on ppl a lot in a rage. Couldn't stand myself. Now taking it for 3 mo. And feel a lot better insteadof fflipping out on ppl I can just walk away and let it go before I would be in a rage for hours/days. My worry level has dropped. This med really helped me. I've tried a bunch and this was the one that helped me. Good luck F 45 3 months

4  Depressive anxiety I've been taking the generic (Venlafaxine EG) and it has helped allright to overcome my anxiety disorder. To be noted that the withdrawal effects are quite severe: I once forgot to take it with me for a week away and I had constant nightmares and strong dizziness during the day. Even with a long and careful phasing out (from 150 to 75 mg, and then to 37,5 mg), after I finally stopped taking it I had occasional nightmares for ten days. M 53 18 months

2  Anxiety & Panic Attacks Daily headaches and severe stomach pains I switched to the generic to save some $$$ but quickly found out after almost 2 weeks that I have been having daily headaches and severe stomach pains. I can only conclude that it is from switching to generic. I will go back to the brand name when this script runs out and see if that cures my problem. M 30 2 weeks

VENLAFAXINE HYDROCHLORIDE  (VENLAFAXINE HYDROCHLORIDE):  Venlafaxine is used to treat depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and social anxiety disorder (social phobia). It may improve your mood and energy level and may help restore your interest in daily living. It may also decrease fear, anxiety, unwanted thoughts, and the number of panic attacks. Venlafaxine is known as a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances (serotonin and norepinephrine) in the brain.   (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)
