XYZAL  (LEVOCETIRIZINE DIHYDROCHLORIDE):  Levocetirizine is an antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms such as watery eyes, runny nose, itching eyes/nose, and sneezing. It is also used to relieve itching and hives. It works by blocking a certain natural substance (histamine) that your body makes during an allergic reaction. Levocetirizine does not prevent hives or prevent/treat a serious allergic reaction (such as anaphylaxis). If your doctor has prescribed epinephrine to treat allergic reactions, always carry your epinephrine injector with you. Do not use levocetirizine in place of your epinephrine.   FDA Approval Date: 2007-05-25 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  Severe Allergies - Rhinitis Fatigue, weight gain, moodiness, soreness in lower back and hips After trying Xyzal for a short time I cut the dose in half. Took it around 7 pm. It definately helped with allergies, however, it's NOT worth the side effects. I have gained about 15-20 lbs. Fatigue, energy is low. Mood swings...probably because I gained weight. Can not loose weight even after I've modified diet and increased my workouts. I stopped taking the Xyzal about a week ago to see if I'm feeling better. F 41 9 months

1  itching in ear I have had weird and disturbing dreams since the first night when taking this medicine. I usually sleep soundly and don't remember my dreams. It has not helped the itching in my ear. Although it's possible that my strange dreams are not related to this medicine, I really don't feel comfortable taking this medication. I believe it needs more research, particularly on how it may affect mood. F 52 10 days

3  allergies shortness of breath developed after a month or so: severity varies by day I took this in the evening to avoid fatigue (replaced fexofenadine). I am discontinuing use of this drug, however, due to the shortness of breath... it's a worrisome side effect. M 43 4 months

3  Allergies and Asthma Explosive diarrhea, slight weight gain and extremely groggy When I first took XYZAL, I could tell it was making me very groggy. I decided to take it at night but could barely peel myself up from bed in the morning. Had explosive diarrhea .. very dark in color! Decided to break the pill in half and take it at night. Same symptoms but not as bad. Makes you very hungry! It does knock out bad allergy symptoms but you have to deal with the side affects. I only take it when needed! M 45 5 months

3  Allergies, asthma, hives Drowsiness, hunger (munchies) It really seems to help open up my airways when I'm feeling constricted, and my allergies don't bother me as much while I'm on it, but there's no way I could take it during the day and still function normally. I can't even take it every night (as was prescribed) because it's too hard to wake up the next morning. It almost feels as if I've taken an over-the-counter sleep aid. I also seem to get the munchies while on it and can't stop snacking, or get rid of the hunger, until I just get so tired I go to bed. F 22 6 months

4  Chronic Hives Weight Gain/Water Retention, Sleepiness, Hunger, Constipation I take a half a pill (5mg) when I feel a hive outbreak coming on and it usually stops it from becoming a full-body episode. the drug works but I hate the side effects. I had been taking it daily but I was very sleepy (hard to wake up in the morning) and had gained weight. Now, I take as needed, and have lost some weight and am not as sleepy. But I do notice that when I take it, I am tired and hungry. F 28

1  brachiradial pruritis, hives None. This drug did nothing to help my hives, itching, OR my seasonal nasal allergies. I have heard it helps others tremendously, but it has done nothing for me, and it is still very expensive, even with insurance because it is so new. F 41 1 months

5  Chronic autoimmune urticaria Some sleepiness in first few days taking it. I really had no side effects, I was taking this in combination with Doxepin and prednisone to treat my chronic hives. So it could very well have been the Doxepin making me tired. I still get some hives and am only taking the Xyzal (for the last month or so) and it seems to be helping (compared to having 60-70% of my body covered in hives for weeks). I stopped all other antihystamines and it's working great for my everyday allergies too! It IS a very expensive drug, for my budjet anyway. I am lucky enough to get endless "samples" from my doctor. If I had to pay the 120.00 (I believe it is) for the 90 day supply through my insurance I wouldn't be able to take it, but would be very bummed about it. F 24 6 months

1  allergic rhinitis Memory loss, continually tired/sleepy and stuggled all day to concentrate. When I took Xyzal I would randomly forget conversations I had, things I'd done, general knowledge facts. Even when taking it in the evening and couldn't wake up in the mornings and stayed tired all day. Overall, it never worked that well for controlling my allergy symptoms. I was still sneezing and had lots of nasal stuffiness. Plus there was some weight gain. F 49 3 weeks

5  CIU Weight gain - expensive - $50 for 30 pills w/ insurance This is the only medication that had any control over CIU - even heavy doses of steroids did not help. Occasional hives, but no more emergency room visits or living on Benadryl. If people think this makes them tired try taking Benadryl 2-3 times a day. M 37 12 months

4  chronic idiopathic urticaria Weight gain and feeling tired. I couldn't figure out why I was gaining weight and feeling drowsy and then I started looking at these comments and realized it must be the Xyzal. I stopped taking it 2 days ago and so far the hives haven't returned. M 53 6 months

3  allergy - hives My 2 year old son gets explosive diarrhea when using xyzal. Never experienced it with zrytec. We like the lower dosages and it seems to make him less weird but the stomach issues have limited our use of it. We will not refill once this prescription is out. F 32

1  allergies flu like body aches, bad stomach cramping, diarrhea, and gas pains. Side effects made me feel like really bad flu with digestive/bowel problems. Went off this drug and felt great again except for the sinus problems. Dealt with it for 3 long weeks. F 45 3 weeks

1  Allergy Cramps and spams that appear to come from the esophagus and radiated to the upper chest. It felt as if needing to burp, except there was no burping. Episodes lasted for 45 - 90 minutes. Problem went away 1 day after stopping the medication. Will rather have the allergies than this side effect. M 52 4 days
