XYZAL  (LEVOCETIRIZINE DIHYDROCHLORIDE):  Levocetirizine is an antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms such as watery eyes, runny nose, itching eyes/nose, and sneezing. It is also used to relieve itching and hives. It works by blocking a certain natural substance (histamine) that your body makes during an allergic reaction. Levocetirizine does not prevent hives or prevent/treat a serious allergic reaction (such as anaphylaxis). If your doctor has prescribed epinephrine to treat allergic reactions, always carry your epinephrine injector with you. Do not use levocetirizine in place of your epinephrine.   FDA Approval Date: 2007-05-25 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  xyzal Fatigue, Depression XYZAL took care of my allergy issues but I just started feeling tired all the time and then started feeling lethargic and did not want to do anything. I'm usually active going kayaking and fishing. I stopped taking this and began feeling good and energietic again. Something I haven't felt in the 8 months I was on XYZAL. M 46 8 months

5  Tearing eyes, chronic hives None Excellent, no side effects, took care of my chronic hives as well as tearing eyes. I have new food allergies, courtesy of menopause, and this drug takes care of all the symptoms if I eat something I shouldn't. It has been a life saver for me. F 56 7 months

5  Seasonal Allergies None For years, before taking this medicine (even while on other prescription medicines) about three times a year, I developed a terrible cough lasting 4-6 weeks. I was given cough medicine and was prescribed a nebulizer plus the assorted prescription allergy meds. About 2 months ago my doctor decided to try me on Xyzal. Within days, my cough was gone and even during this recent high allergy alert I don't drip or cough. I also am alert all day and sleep well at night. It is a very effective drug. F 59 60 days

4  Allergies Sleepy in the morning, feel dehydrated, having strange dreams. Definitely helping my allergy symptoms. Taking one each evening because if taken during the day, I feel way too sleepy. Will continue to try it for another month to see if benefits outweigh the side effects. F 41 2 weeks

3  allergies Can't get enough sleep. Always have the munchies. Weird dreams and did things in sleep that I don't remember. I didn't know that this drug was used for other things like sleep I thought it was just for allergies. I felt better but at the rate I was going with the munchies I'll get huge. Still woke up all with my head and ears feeling full. Hope this helps someone. F 29 5 weeks

4  Allergies / Dustmite Sleepy, slight increase in hunger, vivid dreams Sleepy at night was helpful... and during the day I just pound caffeine from am 'til evening that takes care of the sleepies. The constant munchies inspired me to go full force again with the Atkins diet - since I was hungry all the time... and I actually LOST 6 pounds in the first two months... so eat you will but WHAT you eat matters when it comes to the consequences of doing so I suppose. I take 2 xyzal a day and wouldn't be able to function without it... I'm on allergy shots too and it's very tough, but I'm determined to win this fight. Vivid dreams... who cares? They're just dreams! I will continue to take 2 xyzal a day, drink caffeine (love that rush) and stay on this great diet as long as needed. I've never felt better. The medicine works - you just have to decide how to counteract the side effects... and you can with a few minor adjustments. F 44 5 months

2  Allergies Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Nervousness, Depression I have never been depressed, nor have I ever had a panic attack in my whole life. I would feel real nervous all the time for no reason! No trouble sleeping though. I hated feeling so down with this medicine. My allergist switched me to Alavert and I feel great. For my allergies, it was working fine. F 18 1 months

3  Severe allergic rhinitis/sinusitis Drowsiness, feeling 'stoned,' strange and intense dreams I've never actually been 'stoned,' per se, but I imagine it feels very much like being drunk, only without the dizziness and wooziness. That's pretty much how I feel on this stuff -- sedated and foggy; it affects my reaction time considerably, which is important, since a bicycle is my primary mode of transit. Waking up in the morning is nearly impossible. I took my Xyzal at 7 PM last night and set my alarm a full hour early this morning; it still took me considerably longer than usual to get out of bed. However, I am extremely susceptible to the sedative effects of antihistamines in general -- even Benedryl will knock me out for two days. On the other hand, the Xyzal is doing wonders for my insomnia (I just wish I didn't feel so out of it during the day). However, it works very, very well for my lifelong, generally intractible allergic rhinitis and sinusitis. Literally, for the first time in my life, I'm able to breathe through my nose without taking decongestants. I'm going to give it another week or so to see if the drowsiness and 'stoned' sensation go away. The dreams I can deal with. If the other side-effects abate, in my particular case, this medication will be worth my while. M 31 7 days

3  Sinus issues (post surgery) Weight gain, sleepiness I am not sure if the surgery or the Xyzal has improved my condition. I still have better days and not so good days. I am also taking an inhaled steroid which may affect weight. I was hoping for significant results and am just not seeing them. F 42 8 weeks

5  Took to stop poison ivy itching I only took one pill, along with one generic Zantac --- this combo took the horrible itching away. Now I have read about the weight gain side effect on here and will not take ANY more Xyzal!!! F 53 1 times

3  allergic rhinitis Awful sleepiness and an overall drugged feeling 30 min. after taking it at night. Could barely wake up the next morning and have been feeling drugged all day long. Doubt I will take it again today, cannot function with this side effect. Ringing of ears. Allergy is somewhat better today but it is hard to say if it is due to the drug. F 40 1 days

1  Allergies severe abdominal distention, tired and confused, memory problems, extreme water weight gain (7lbs in 9 days) constant hunger even when feeling bloated and "full," difficulty getting up in the morning. Worked like a charm for my allergies/sinus problems, but you must take it consistently otherwise the symptoms come back within 24 hrs. F 46 9 days

3  Allergic Rhinitis I take medication for Anxiety. Between that and Xyzal I could barely stay awake during the day. It caused total malaise. I took it at night and within 20 minutes I had to put my book down and just pass out. Waking up in the morning was awful. Helped my sinus problem but I can't sleep for the rest of my life so I'm going off today. No more Xyzal for me. Zyrtec didn't have as long of a reaction as far as staying tired although they both make me tired with extreme problems with Xyzal. I will try non-drowsy claritin and see how that works. I don't normally sleep well at night so it was kind of a relief to sleep good but was it worth it. NO!!!! I have taken this off and on along with Zyrtec since January. No more of either!!!!!  1  allergies, itching extreme fatigue, headache, dizziness, nausea Tried it for a week about a month ago and had similar problems but decided to try again in case it was something else causing the symptoms but this time there was no doubt that this is NOT the med for me. I like my plain old (cheaper) Zyrtec. F 56 1 days
