SYMBICORT  (BUDESONIDE; FORMOTEROL FUMARATE DIHYDRATE):  This product is used to control and prevent symptoms (wheezing and shortness of breath) caused by asthma or ongoing lung disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-COPD, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema). It contains 2 medications: budesonide and formoterol. Budesonide belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids. It works by reducing the irritation and swelling of the airways. Formoterol belongs to the class of drugs known as long-acting beta agonists. It works by opening airways in the lungs to make breathing easier. Controlling symptoms of breathing problems can decrease time lost from work or school. When used alone, long-acting beta agonists (such as formoterol) may rarely increase the risk of serious (sometimes fatal) asthma-related breathing problems. However, combination inhaled corticosteroid and long-acting beta agonists, such as this product, do not increase the risk of serious asthma-related breathing problems. For asthma treatment, this product should be used when breathing problems are not well controlled with one asthma-control medication (such as inhaled corticosteroid) or if your symptoms need combination treatment. Before using this medication, it is important to learn how to use it properly. This medication must be used regularly to be effective. It does not work right away and should not be used to relieve sudden asthma attacks. If an asthma attack occurs, use your quick-relief inhaler (such as albuterol, also called salbutamol in some countries) as prescribed.   FDA Approval Date: 2006-07-21 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  copd fatigue. dizziness.nausea.shortness of breath causing me to take more breathing meds. joint and muscle pain. anxiety . racing heart. high BP. headache. ungodly indigestion i am just figuring out many of the symptoms i have been experiencing for years are due to this drug. incredible that my dr has not figured this out. to the point that i was put on anxiety meds - more inhalers - meds for acid indigestion - and heart meds to slow my racing heart. the other day just after taking my morning dose my heart was racing thru the roof. i was ready to go to the ER. then i realized its that med. called my dr and told him i am not taking it any more. within 24 hrs i feel so much better. i expect i will feel much better in 3 to 5 days. will be stopping the omeprazol and the metoprolol soon as well. so happy to be off this drug.  5  To manage my asthma In spite of rinsing my mouth each time I use it my entire mouth is sore and my tongue Burns and the insides of my lips are sore and there is a yellow coating on the roof of my mouth and my throat and on the top of my tongue down the sides of it inside my cheeks and under my tongue. It's almost impossible to eat because I can't eat anything that does not hurt and I do have a strange taste in my mouth most of the day. I was taking dulera that did not work then I took Bria and it gave me a bad case of bronchitis and a severe cough and I have taken Advair in the past and cannot take it anymore. F 71 4 months

1  Asthma Racing HR, Constant Migraines, Shakiness, Fatigue, Muscle Cramps, Back Pain, Insomnia, Lightheadedness, Shortness of Breath, Mood Changes, Anxiety. I recently switched from Advair to Symbicort for insurance reasons. First, I noticed myself becoming highly irritable and anxious. Then, I got headaches daily. Soon after, I started to get body and back aches and develop the other side effects listed. My resting HR went from 80 to 100 and I felt highly weak until I figured out it was Symbicort. I've been off for 24 hrs. I still have most of the symptoms but they are not quite as severe as before. Hopefully, it will wear off soon. F 16 3 weeks

1  Copd/Emph. Dizziness, nightmares, insomnia, nausea. Drug conflict with the Metoprolol I take for blood pressure - it increased the strength & I felt lightheaded for hours plus my upper left back bgan to ache continuously. Discontinued 28 hours ago & dizziness stopped but back pain the same. This has to be a bad drug for all organs of the body. I have been on Spiriva for four years & & never had these problems! I was instructed to inhale 2 puffs 2x a day. F 75 7 days

2  cough variant asthma hoarse voice, wheezy non productive cough concerned about taking the medicine for any length of time. I am not sure that I am better. I was given this for a non productive cough that would cause my airway to be blocked. They said it was simply spasms that Symbicort will take care of. Very unsure and concerned. F 68 2 weeks

3  Pneumonia induced asthma Upper back pain under shoulder blades, chest tightens after inhaling for about 20 to 30 minutes, breathless voice, morning mucus cough up, headache, anxiety. I was given it to try and relieve pleurisy, and wheeze. It seems to work but I'd rather had been put on prednisone. M 49 1 months

1  During severe asthma attack in ER Nuisance of a backache right away, bronchospasm with each use later on. I did not figure out till later, when I had finished all the extra drugs (prednisone, Duo-neb), that the continuous troublesome backache was from the Symbicort. About this time, I also noticed that everytime I used it, my chest got tighter. All the more reason to stop it! I hadn't been using inhaled steroids before the attack, and did fine. ER claimed I got the attack because I wasn't on them. It was a one time thing, I hadn't had any real problems not being on those inhalers. I told the pcp, but she said she'd never heard of either backache, or worsening of breathing when using this inhaler. I tapered off in a few days. The backache finally went away a week after that. I'm not going to keep taking a drug that makes me feel worse instead of better. Seems the doctors tune out people who have bothersome effects from these drugs, and claim they've never heard of them.
