SYMBICORT  (BUDESONIDE; FORMOTEROL FUMARATE DIHYDRATE):  This product is used to control and prevent symptoms (wheezing and shortness of breath) caused by asthma or ongoing lung disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-COPD, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema). It contains 2 medications: budesonide and formoterol. Budesonide belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids. It works by reducing the irritation and swelling of the airways. Formoterol belongs to the class of drugs known as long-acting beta agonists. It works by opening airways in the lungs to make breathing easier. Controlling symptoms of breathing problems can decrease time lost from work or school. When used alone, long-acting beta agonists (such as formoterol) may rarely increase the risk of serious (sometimes fatal) asthma-related breathing problems. However, combination inhaled corticosteroid and long-acting beta agonists, such as this product, do not increase the risk of serious asthma-related breathing problems. For asthma treatment, this product should be used when breathing problems are not well controlled with one asthma-control medication (such as inhaled corticosteroid) or if your symptoms need combination treatment. Before using this medication, it is important to learn how to use it properly. This medication must be used regularly to be effective. It does not work right away and should not be used to relieve sudden asthma attacks. If an asthma attack occurs, use your quick-relief inhaler (such as albuterol, also called salbutamol in some countries) as prescribed.   FDA Approval Date: 2006-07-21 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

 2  Asthma, shortness of breath My symptoms of shortness for breath got better at night but my anxiety was high, my throat was very dry, trouble swallowing, headaches, trouble sleeping. Scared and anxious. Had heartburn every night and even went out and bought medication for that. Will stop taking this and start exercising and Only take my allergy meds. 2 puffs 2x a day. F 38 8 days

 1  Cough variant asthma Tiredness, shaky, dizzy, nervous, weakness, cramps, loss of focus, weight gain, thirsty, sore throat, sneezing, sore nasal cavity, light sensitivity I forget every time I stop taking it why. This stuff is horrid, yes it stops me coughing but the side effects are way worse. No idea why this is still on the market. F 34 2 weeks

 1  Asthma Severe muscle cramps, joint pain, chills, dryness of the throat, trouble with swallowing, nausea, vomiting, heartburn (acid reflux), trouble with sleeping, increased sensitivity of the eyes to light and highly irritating skin rashes. My doctor did not explain to me the side effects of this drug that may occur. The first signs (2 weeks later) I had an allergic reaction to this nasty drug which started as skin rashes followed by muscle cramps and very crippling joint pains. The joint pain was so bad I couldn't hardly walk. I had no choice but to stop using this awful drug. I went back to my clinic to explain the side effects with another doctor who works at the same clinic but she brushed off everything I was telling her by giving other reasons for my new suffering pains. These effects I was feeling I tried to tell her was a direct result of my using Symbicort. She simply brushed off everything I was telling her saying such things to me as maybe I have arthritis, which I don't, or I have eczema, which I do not. Rest assured I stopped my treatment at this asthma and allergy clinic! M 60 15 days

 1  Asthma Body aches, muscle aches, severe muscle cramps, joint pain, chills, dryness of the throat, trouble with swallowing, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, trouble with sleeping, increased sensitivity of the eyes to light and irritating skin rashes. I had suffered an ugly bicycle accident a few years ago (2017) which resulted in 5 broken ribs, a broken collarbone and a broken 5th metacarpal (finger bone) of my left hand. The painful side effects I'm suffering from Symbicort right now is far much worse. M 31 days

 1  Asthma Recommend by Doctor after increase in blue pump usage after a viral infection. Worked for 4 to 5 days by reducing wheezing. Then similar to others here; back ache, left shoulder blade ache and heart palpitations coming and going. also slight tingling in hands. Then asthma came back with tight chest and wheezing. Continued for two more days but didn’t improve and was using blue pump twice or three times a day with around 6 puffs minimums. Stopped Symbicort two days ago and feeling slightly better in terms of chest tightness and wheezing. Not taking blue pump yet. For me as like others here the side effects were awful and sudden. These side effects I did not have previously. Back on Clenil Modulite which has been the market since the mid 70’s and hopefully this will stabilise the Asthma again in conjunction with exercise and a combination of Vit D, Omega 3 and Turmeric and ginger. With Clenil I have no side effects. Hopefully things will improve again and allow me to be back lifting weights and biking. Based on my experience I would NOT recommend this drug. Everyone with side effects on here can’t all be wrong. Great if it works for you with no side effects. Not for me... 55 11 days

 3  COPD Hoarseness, charlie horse cramps in lower legs and feet, mostly at night, dizziness, anxiety, shortness of breath, heart racing or palpitations, increased GERD problems; bloating & weight gain (but these are most likely caused by the Spiriva also), insomnia, hair loss. I have no alternative at this time to switch from this drug. I know other drugs have symptoms just as bad. I am, however, discontinuing that awful Spiriva, which has caused every symptom in the book, including weight gain of 19.8 lbs in less than 6 months. F 71 2 years

 1  Son has asthma behavioral changes... anxiety and short tempered. Nervousness and lack of attention and focus. Dropping grades and getting into trouble. From a mild mannered boy to a boy in trouble. at age 9. Disgusted with this meds and those who rx it should be contraindicated. NO LONG TERM STUDIES TO BE FOUND! M 9 8 months

 1  Adult onset asthma Taking 2 puffs 2x daily..severe hair loss, nightmares, muscle & joint pain, wt.gain but appetite loss, blurred vision, puffy eyes, swollen fingers, abdominal pain, nausea, thick mucus, hoarse. Began combined with Prevacid, Allegra and Flonase...all daily...side effects disabling to point of feeling need for crutches or Walker. Physician does not acknowledge extensive side effects but did order creatinine and bun tests which assess liver and kidney function..Now using saline nasal mist as needed, Prevacid as needed ...dietary acid control, Allegra only on day of weekly allergy shots...(indefinite). Tried gradual scale back of Symbicort - very very gradual...symptoms disappeared ! Negative = need some form of weight, personal profile related dosage rather than one size fits all...Near total withdrawal brings on expected withdrawal effects. Physician will not acknowledge possible steroid addiction...notes that steroid content is so minimal as to present no problems. Searching further for additional help with breathing. Considering ASHMI(anti-asthma herbal medication intervention) but only under strict supervision of Chinese herbalist.."July 2007 issue of Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology"...3 herb combo said to reduce lung inflammation & mucus in late onset asthma without lowering suppressing body's cortisol output as steroids do. ...actually raises endogenous cortisol production ! No overall adverse effects on adrenal function reported. Record of su F 75 1 years
