SYMBICORT  (BUDESONIDE; FORMOTEROL FUMARATE DIHYDRATE):  This product is used to control and prevent symptoms (wheezing and shortness of breath) caused by asthma or ongoing lung disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-COPD, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema). It contains 2 medications: budesonide and formoterol. Budesonide belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids. It works by reducing the irritation and swelling of the airways. Formoterol belongs to the class of drugs known as long-acting beta agonists. It works by opening airways in the lungs to make breathing easier. Controlling symptoms of breathing problems can decrease time lost from work or school. When used alone, long-acting beta agonists (such as formoterol) may rarely increase the risk of serious (sometimes fatal) asthma-related breathing problems. However, combination inhaled corticosteroid and long-acting beta agonists, such as this product, do not increase the risk of serious asthma-related breathing problems. For asthma treatment, this product should be used when breathing problems are not well controlled with one asthma-control medication (such as inhaled corticosteroid) or if your symptoms need combination treatment. Before using this medication, it is important to learn how to use it properly. This medication must be used regularly to be effective. It does not work right away and should not be used to relieve sudden asthma attacks. If an asthma attack occurs, use your quick-relief inhaler (such as albuterol, also called salbutamol in some countries) as prescribed.   FDA Approval Date: 2006-07-21 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  COPD/Asthma symptoms Began taking Symbicort along with Singulair when Asthma symptoms increased when the weather turned cold. Went off Singulair after 10 days but continued Symbicort. (If you are taking Singulair please research black box warnings associated with it.) Have had weight gain, depression, major anxiety and overall feeling of apathy. I think its important for doctors to make their patients aware of the need to weigh the side effects of a medication versus the benefits. There are side effects to every medication we take.  1  Dr. Prescribed for Asthma Hoarseness, trouble breathing, wheezing, leg cramps, nausea, bloating. Why is this even allowed to be prescribed? It's a horrible drug. F 60 15 days

3  Asthma Increased anxiety Increased heart rate Tremors in hands Rashes- when I started taking it once a day everyday I noticed I had x4coin sided rashes come up on my body on my thigh, arm, stomach I googled it and it looked like a “hectors patch” I'm not sure if it was caused by the inhaler, I'm not on any other mendication but seemed a conincidence. Also got tonsillitis, not sure if this caused it. It seemed to work well but I feel uncomfortable as it contains small amount of steroids and long term may be more harmful, eg rare side effects blindness, I don't want to take the risk. Think I'll switch back to salbutamol. F 31 1 years

4  Allergies, Asthma Occasional fatigue. Some muscle soreness perhaps, but also on montelukast and a low dose of spiriva now. You must rinse well with warm water to avoid thrush issues/hoarseness. Been on Advair, then Dulera for a number of years. They are all pretty similar though Dulera worked better until caremark forced me off it or pay full retail. Was required to go on Symbicort as their covered alternative first. After going back and forth my symptoms got a bit worse and never have improved using either formulation. M 63 2 years

1  Asthma Anxiety, shortness of breath, insomnia, skin rash and hives Pharmacists and doctors need to be more clear on what to watch out for with this drug. If a patient goes to emerg. an incorrect diagnosis will be made if the side effects of this drug is not widely acknowledged. F 62 25 days

4  Lingering effects of pneumonia Helps the shortness of breath and chest tightness. Exacerbated my insomnia. No weight gain, but have moon face effects. Migraines have gotten markedly worse and often can't be managed by OTC excedrin anymore. No other medications have helped like this one, too the point where I'm nearly bed bound off it, but able to run for 5 minutes straight on it. Going off then back on (when dr tried to get me off them unsuccessfully, twice) made side effects worse for a couple weeks. F 38 6 months

1  Asthma Excruciating leg cramps. I will not use this drug again. I stopped using it because of leg cramps but after a few months tried another dose. That night I awoke with the most extreme leg cramp I have ever experienced. I have to wonder what other damage the drug does. F 65 3 days

5  Asthma No side effects whatsoever. My asthma came back into my life last year; the past 3 months have been horrible. Inhalers/nebulizer would only last 2-hours. Allergist prescribed Symbicort 160/4.5 last month--and the asthma has disappeared! No side effects, either. I highly recommend this drug. M 60

1  Seasonal Asthma Week 1 - No problems Week 2 - Intermittent dizziness, fast heart, insomnia. Week 3/4 - Anxiety, left arm arch, eye lid twitch, legs twitching (so annoying at night), intermittent weird numb face sensation, ears ringing, unable to focus at work. I have ceased immediately, today is 48hrs since my last dose and I still have some of the above side effects. I am hoping that this dissipates in the next day or so. I should have read this thread before I took this. M 38 1 months

4  Mild COPD Has worked fine. Started gaining weight immediately and still gaining 9 years later. I'm about 35 pounds overweight. I'm sure there's other factors. I'm quite active though and tried diets and never lost a pound. My skin cuts very easily also which is annoying. Starting today I'm going to cut my dose in half then stop completely for a few months and see if there's a difference. M 59 9 years
