LEVEMIR  (NSULIN DETEMIR):  Insulin detemir is used with a proper diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar in people with diabetes. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. Proper control of diabetes may also lessen your risk of a heart attack or stroke. Insulin detemir is a man-made product that is similar to human insulin. It replaces the insulin that your body would normally make. It acts longer than regular insulin, providing a low, steady level of insulin. It works by helping blood sugar (glucose) get into cells so your body can use it for energy. Insulin detemir may be used with a shorter-acting insulin product.  1  Diabetes Type 2 I'm no longer taking this medication. Insurance stopped covering Levemir. Also, the pens are being discontinued April, 2024 and the vials are being discontinued in December, 2024.  1  Insurance company DQ'd Lantus My numbers are probably 40% higher than with Lantus I have seen numbers at all times of the day that are by far record highs, By far. A high number on Lantus was 165. I now see 240 to 290 regularly and I have a good diet. Every day from 3 pm to 7pm I have very low energy spells. I am going to try to get back on Lantus even if I have to Pay for it myself until I can change insurance providers. M 72 0 days

 1  Die None Used Levemir for more than 18 months without appreciable results. Reading remained in the low to mid 200's. Switched to Lantus and saw immediate results. Sugar reading declined by 60 points and reduced dosage to 60 units once per day. Once had hypoglycemic reaction where BS levels went to 72. While Levemir is on some insurance carriers formulary and Lantus is not, I recommend that you ask the insurance company for an exception to allow the use of Lantus. M 70 18 months
