IMPLANON  (ETONOGESTREL):  This product is a small, thin plastic rod that is inserted under the skin to prevent pregnancy. The rod slowly releases etonogestrel into the body over a 3-year period. Etonogestrel is similar to a natural hormone made in your body. It works mainly by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation) during your menstrual cycle. It also makes vaginal fluid thicker to help prevent sperm from reaching an egg (fertilization) and changes the lining of the uterus (womb) to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg. This product does not contain any estrogen. This medication may not work as well in women who are very overweight or those taking certain drugs. (See also Drug Interactions section.) Discuss your birth control options with your doctor. Using this medication does not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases (such as HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia).   FDA Approval Date: 2011-05-31 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  birth control I just wanted to let others know about my experience. I got the implant in over a year ago. I gain 20 lbs in a year and suffer with severe mood swings. I find my self crying sometimes for no reason. I had NEVER had period cramps previous to getting the implant, I bled before it was only 3-4 days with a regular flow,on a 23-25 day cycle. Now I bleed up to two weeks at times. With intense cramps. Usually starting, two days after I have sex. So I go two weeks bleeding then have sex and I will start bleeding again for two weeks. It is absolutly ridiculous. My gynecologist who put the implant in told me at my 6 month, to give it more time did tests and nothing came back. Now I'm at 15 months and it's still the same. See and the major problem now is that insurance paid to put it in my arm but won't pay to take it out. And I was quoted $400 to have it removed. No payment plans available. If your using this F 25 1 years

5  Birth control I had two different implanons over five years. The first six months was a bit crazy with a low moods and light frequent bleeds (though nothing like a period). I am glad that I stuck with it as for the rest of the time it has been wonderful. My moods have been very constant and upbeat, periods very infrequent and light, no period pain or back cramping, good sex drive. I am the biggest baby ever when it comes to needles and blood, however I found the insersion and removal procedures bareable and not a bit painful. As someone who previously used the pill for five years, I can fully recommend the implant and wouldn't hesitate to use it again after starting a family. The only minor side effect I have found with the implant is minor acne, however I am happy to live with this for the other benefits Implanon offers. F 28 5 years

Sometimes it's a period at the beginning of the month then one at the end or its have a period for one week be off for another week then start again other then irregular periods killing my sex life there really isn't much for me to complain about I loved it F 21 3 years

4  Birth control; period regulation Hugely irregular bleeding; lots of bleeding; nausea; For the most part it worked great, but then I started having more period days than non-period days in a month. And there was always a lot of blood. Like for instance I'd have a 3 week period with lots of blood, stop for 3 days, then have dark smelly blood for a couple of days, then I'd stop. Then a week or 2 later I'd start again. 100% irritating. Now that I have it out I'm thinking it was also a source of my nausea. I would have random really bad bouts of nausea that would appear out of the blue & then would leave suddenly. Otherwise it worked well. If I wouldn't have had the constant bleeding I wouldn't have had it taken out. F 20 2 years

3  was recommended Have had a constant period since I got it 8 months ago and increased mood swings. Regret having the implant, I feel the pill would have suited me better if I would have remembered to take it. F 16 8 months

5  Birth control I've had nexplanon for 4 weeks now and haven't had a period. I switch from the mini pill to nexplanon. So far I've experienced cramping as if I'm going to start my period but I never do. I've also had an increase in clear vaginal discharge. My partner and I hate using condoms so this bc is perfect for us. I am also extremely overweight but not sure if it's effected my chances of getting pregnant. I would definitely recommend trying it. Everyone's body is different. F 21 4 weeks

4  Birth Control Had only spotting and no periods at all really for the first 2 implanon (6 years). Since I got my 3rd I have got my periods back again and they are random. Sometime 2 in a month and sometimes nothing for 2 months however even that is starting to level out and my last few months I have only had one per month and at pretty even times. Only usual 5 days. A small amount of acne under the chin which is definitely hormonal and bloating just before my period same as any contraception. I have been very emotional and feel very sad or irritable and lonely a lot during this time however I have been like this for as long as I can remember and on contraception of different sorts for the last 15 years so I do not really have any idea whether the strong emotions are due to the implanon or just me. All in all I have found it great to not have to worry about remembering to take contraception or go to the Dr every 3 months for an injection so I would recommend giving it a try. Technically and symptoms should stop as soon as its removed so worst case scenario, if your body doesn't agree with it, you just remove it again and you should feel back to normal pretty quickly.  3  To prevent pregnancies. I had the Implanon® Implant inserted June 11, 2014. It is October 29, 2014 and I am very dissatisfied so far. Just a breif physical description, I am 5"4 and 116lbs. I have had constant vaginal bleeding 2 weeks after it was put in. My bleeding has not stopped it has been heavy, to light, to very light spotting, and then back to heavy. I have cramped, gotten headaches, gaining weight, heat flashes, nausea, and mood swings that are unusual. The only thing I have liked about Implanon® is that I did not have to worry about taking a pill everyday at a specific time and it lasts three years. Other then that it is not for me. Maybe others have had a great expierence with it but I have not. F 19 4 months

2  Birth control Was originally on birth control pills but became pregnant since I was not taking properly. Decided to have implanon inserted in 10/2011 after I had my son. Went with that since I didn't have to worry for 3 years. Had a period for 3 months straight after insertion and after that a period every 2 weeks for about 10 days. Gained 60 pounds over 3 years even with trying to diet and exercise. Had no sex drive at all and had severe acne. Went to have it removed in 9/2014 since it was expiring and the Dr was unable to remove it even with an ultrasound. Had to go to a surgeon to have it surgically removed. It's been out for 3 weeks and already all acne has cleared and lost 10 pounds. I do not recommend. F 23 3 years

4  contraception Only major side affect I have experienced is spotting. This is where you have little bits of bleeding here and there inbetween periods. I was mainly writing on here for those considering getting the implant who have acne. I have had grade 4 cystic acne since I was 12 and let me tell you, getting the implant doesn't help! It doesnt make it any worse, but the excess hormones certainly dont help the spots disappear! F 17 3 weeks

3  Birth control and periods Okay so I've only had the implant for 3 weeks and therefore more than likely have plenty more side effects to witness but still, I thought I'd rate it myself anyways. After reading multiple of the other ratings posted I must say I'm rather worried. I haven't suffered from many migranes, only one or two and haven't gained any weight either. I have however witnessed an excessive period for over 12 days now, it began with spotting which didn't really bother me, it stopped for a few days and within that time I had sex with my boyfriend(I am aware I am younger than the majority of it's users, but I've been in a serious relationship for over a year and a half now). After having sex my period got really heavy and since then it has been constant. I'm hoping I end up like my friends and some of the reviewers whom have claimed that their first period was extended and after that it ended completely. I don't want to take the pills that have been recommended by my gp to regulate them as they are known to cause massive weight gain. My sex drive hadn't really been effected until these last couple of days, arrousal is almost impossible which is extremely frustrating. My mood swings have been almost unbearable considering I also suffer from bipolar disorder, they have been hightened immensely since its insertation. I am hoping that my periods calm down, if this isn't the case I intend on having it removed as this was the main reason I requested this form of contraception. F 15 3 weeks

1  birth control Weight gain and acne I have been trying to get my implanon out since march and they cant get it out. I have went in 3 times for removal with no success getting the implant out of my arm. If you are young and want kids in the future I would not recommend implanon it may be causing me infertility by being expired and some what lost in my arm. I am going to go to the hospital and have to force them to get it out that's all I can do at this point F 21 3 years
