WELLBUTRIN XL  (BUPROPION):  This medication is used to treat depression. It may also be used to prevent seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression that occurs each year at the same time (for example, during winter). This medication can improve your mood and feelings of well-being. It may work by restoring the balance of certain natural substances (dopamine, norepinephrine) in the brain.   FDA Approval Date: 2003-08-28 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  Depression Severe anxiety- usually under control, horrible insomnia every night, headache, stomachache- just don’t feel good at all. The anxiety is the worst part, going to have to quit taking this, because of it. F 54 3 months

5  Severe Depression Jitters, energy, feeling of relief, restlessness, headaches after taking pill, insomnia and low sex drive. It was similar to taking Aripipazole but while being on the pill it worsened my depression. After being prescribed Bupropion everything got better. Effects of being jittery was a good thing. Helps with preventing any cravings for smoking cigarettes. I took pill while slowly weening of Aripipazole but would recommend taking Bupropion temporarily. Constant headaches is one thing you have to endure for the time being, if not, talk to your doctor about trying a different pill. Other than that, you feel great. M 24 2 weeks

4  Long term chronic pain I often have side effects that other people don’t- I get the side effects more common in children. I have no idea why- many people have mentioned that they think I may have ADHD ( my husband says no question), so this could be why? Anyways... Wellbutrin is prescribed for restless legs , but it has given me restless legs at night. I’m going to live with it and hope it goes away. Everything else with this med is great! It doesn’t take away my libido, doesn’t make me crave carbs and sugar like a bear getting ready for hibernation, it doesn’t send me into a hypomanic phase ( never had before antidepressants ) of talking non- stop, drinking and being overly socialable with everyone. It does make me feel a little fluttery like too much caffeine at times, but that’s tolerable. The SSRI’s had pooped out on me - Paxil had helped me for many years, but I had gained a lot of weight over the past several years, felt a bit disconnected and numb. Wellbutrin is milder and very helpful for me. Definitely worth a try - some people say don’t use if you have anxiety, I have found it to be ok for me. I do understand what the concern is because it feels more “ up” than calming. F 55 30 days

3  Depression Flatulence, flatulence, flatulence. I am stopping taking it this week, day 2 and already the constant flatulence is gone. I just couldn't take the large, loud, painful gas anymore. If not for the constant flatulence I would happily remain on this med as it has helped my depression and allowed me to quit smoking 9 months now. F 55 14 months

5  Depression, PTSD Extremely arroused. To the point I can be thinking about nothing and will have an orgasm. However it isn't a bad thing considering I had no sex drive for 2 years on prozac. I cant drink soda, coffee, anything with caffeine. I have lost 5 lbs in the 7 days I've taken it. I wasnt overweight to begin with but I'm okay with the extra flat tummy. Shakiness, insomnia, dry mouth, food taste different. Despite the side effects, it has completely cleared my mind and turned my negative outlook on life to a positive. F 35 7 days

4  Depression I'm a registered nurse in critical care. I don't believe 90% of the side effects people report on this drug. Yes it has a little bit of dopamine and norepinephrine activation, but that's what it's supposed to do. Yes you might feel anxious and you might get constipated and you might get a headache, but those are your body adjusting to the drug. You have to give it time to start working and to bring about a sense of homeostasis. Stop with all the hyperbole. Some of these experiences I read are utterly ridiculous. It's all in your mind. Chill out and expect to feel different when you start taking this medication as with all medications. Once you give it a chance it will work. It is one of the highest rated antidepressants on this website. Give it a chance. M 46 6 months

5  PTSD I am taking the generic version, however, I have taken the brand name as well in the past with same sides effects. First it took about 3 months of torture to get past the side effects: sweating, anxiety, angry, reactive and very little or no sleep. Then the benefits arrived. Happy, motivated, sexually driven, able to concentrate. All was well emotionally, though I still got a little gangster from time to time, it was not as bad. Overall, I was very satisfied with the benefits. Then out of nowhere came the itching, bumps and giant red welts all over my body. I had swollen lips like Kylie Jenner. I went the V.A hospital and of coarse they do not what the hell they are doing half the time. I was told to keep taking it but then take Benadryl ( probably not the best advice) I am hoping that there is something else similar that I can take. Anyone have any advice? F 50 6 days

5  PTSD Pros: improved my PTSD dramatically, oragasms are awesome, lots of energy, focused, motivated. Happy Cons: early side effects were horrid; anxiety, impatient, snappy, rageful, sweating, gas, bloating. Then six months later came the hives. Tried to get off it before. I was fine for about a week then went into a deep depression and became suicidal. My VA Shrink will not prescribe it to me anymore and is not going to wean me off. I am scared. Anyone have the same issue? Are there any other anti-depressants that work the same? I do not trust the VA. F 50 6 months

4  Anxiety None really anymore I take it as an addition to my anxiety meds. It is used to augment the sexual side effects from my lexapro and make me normal. I was on 150 for a long time and that worked well. Titrated up to 300 mg xl and it worked very well. The side effects were jitters but overall ok. It works well It has saved my life. It took me out of a dark place but F 33 4 years

2  Depression, panic, smoking cessatio Anger and rage, SEVERE constipation (taking massive amounts of fiber and laxatives and it still takes ~3 days for bm), cognitive dysfunction--couldn't concentrate, remember what I was saying or thinking. Made me feel insane/idiotic. Made me think I was ugly, had constant negative thoughts. Initially, nausea, stomach pain, dizziness and disorientation, general ill feeling but that subsided after my body got used to it. I was very grateful it stopped cigarette cravings! It stopped panic cold except the last week or so. However, even at highest dose, I was always on the edge of tears, down, overreactive, and felt like my brain didn't work. F 45 2 months

2  Anxiety, OCD, Clinical Depression Every single one. I'm on the Generic if that makes a difference. Fogginess, increased need to urinate, OCD increase, Jittery and restless like I've never been before, Had Panic attack feelings although haven't had one yet. Feel Wired beyond belief and I can't drink caffeine at all which sucks... I'm also taking Effexor XR 150mg, I was hoping this would level things out but it's made me feel weird and I dont like it one bit. The one thing I can give to Wellbutrin is my mood was a bit better and the intrusive suicidal thoughts were gone... M 35 1 months

4  Depression Minor noradrenergic activation. Nothing major at all. I grew tired of the SSRI carousel; fatigue, apathy, no sex drive, so I stopped the SSRI drugs and now use generic bupropion XL 300mg daily. Good drug. Don't read too much into the crazy comments on this site; depressed people can be hyperbolic. Wellbutrin is a good drug. And I'm a registered nurse, so I know a bit about antidepressants.  2  Depression and anxiety I had been on Celexa for several years and talked to my doc about the low energy and inability to lose weight he recommended Wellbutrin xl. One week at 150 then up to 300. Well the side effects have been awful, constipation, insomnia, jitters and they even got worse when I bumped up to 300. More tremors, dizziness, blurry vision and I think it lowered my blood sugar. I made it 10 days then contacted my doc and he sent me to a shrink that immediately told me to go back to 150. I felt immediately better clear headed and not like I was gonna fall down. Now I'm on day 5 and still have the insomnia and horrible shakiness. I have to work with the public so this sucks. My shrink says it might also be a good idea to add a small dose of celexa. Why not just get back to celexa? I was overweight but happy and could sleep. Be very cautious before starting try all alternatives first. M 41 26 days

3  depression Significant HAIR LOSS!!!!!, hives, itchy skin, very foul smelling flatulence, hyposomnia, headaches, constipation, panic attacks, irritability, brain fog, forgetfullness The first week to 12 days on bupropion hcl xl 150 mg I was painfully constipated with a constant stinging, burning headache. These 2 side effects did go away for me gradually. I then increased to 300mg of the same and began to experience hyposomnia (waking up wide awake and unable to fall back asleep after 4 or 5 hours of sleep) and increased irritability. Slowly, I was noticing little piles of 5 or six of my hairs everywhere but on my head, all day long ( on my shirts, coats, car floor, bed, bedroom floor...the shower drain was nuts!!!) After 6 weeks, I was shocked when a hair band that I normally never wear because it would only wrap around my ponytail twice and hadn't been strong enough to hold up the weight of my hair,...now suddenly wrapped around 4 TIMES!!!!!! Shocking. I'd rather be fat and depressed with very nice skin and hair, than constantly farting, balding, irritable, and itchy. Poison, as far as I'm concerned. These side effects are not worth the slight weight loss and moderate, yet artificial- feeling improvement in mood that I experienced. F 43 3 months
