ABILIFY  (ARIPIPRAZOLE):  Aripiprazole is used to treat certain mental/mood disorders (such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, Tourette's syndrome, and irritability associated with autistic disorder). It may also be used in combination with other medication to treat depression. Aripiprazole is known as an antipsychotic drug (atypical type). It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural chemicals in the brain (neurotransmitters). This medication can decrease hallucinations and improve your concentration. It helps you to think more clearly and positively about yourself, feel less nervous, and take a more active part in everyday life. Aripiprazole can treat severe mood swings and decrease how often mood swings occur.   FDA Approval Date: 2002-11-15 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  doctor gave for depression Extreme psychosis. Involuntary body movements. Racing thoughts with uncontrollable speech. Severe anxiety that has not abated in two years. Inability to control fine motor function. Lack of sleep with powerful electrical episodes prior to dozing off in the rare occasion of unconsciesness. l was medically weaned off of this insidious drug. I am permanently destroyed by this horrific poisonous drug. What can I do against a giant company like BMS? I am suffering from early onset dementia to boot. M 54 10 weeks

1  Adjunct for depression I was taking this drug as an adjunct med for depression and within a couple of weeks, I had my entire suicide planned ... This was not me nor ever me. I had never had these thoughts before until taking abilify... I had myself convinced this was the best option for myself and my family. This was terrible... I realized what was going on and immediately stopped taking it. Within a week, I was back to normal and fine... This drug is dangerous!!! F 32 5 weeks

1  Bipolar OCD, bouts of anger, vomiting, weightloss, loss of appetite, insomnia, aggression, upset stomach Started at 10mg, then 7mg, 5mg and I quit taking them. The worse drug I've ever taken. I was unable to deal with other people. I was trapped in a world controlled by anger and OCD. I cared about nothing and no one. It made me feel dead inside. I didn't want to lower my dose to taper off; I quit taking them and told my doctor. This might treat depression in others, but for me the only benefit I got was quick weightloss 10 pounds in 3 weeks.  1  Bipolar II Weight gain, total loss of bladder control (daytime incontinence, bedwetting), muscle spasms, eye twitching. For many years, Abilify was my miracle. It controlled my anger and eased my depression, I was actually happy. I started off at 5 mg a day and had to be increased gradually to the maximum dose of 30 mg a day due to the fact that it was losing effectiveness. But as my doctor increased the dose, my bipolar symptoms were no longer managed and the side effects became UNBEARABLE. Weight gain and everything else aside, I was humiliated to lose control of my bladder every time I had to go. It happened in public, it happened in bed, and I had to explain to my family what was going on. I've been off of Abilify for 2 months now, I quit cold turkey. I have regained complete control of my bladder, no more incontinence at all after years of blaming myself. My muscle spasms and eye twitching went away as well. Please be careful taking Abilify, do your research, and talk to your doctor if you experience side effects. This drug is no joke. F 21 5 years

1  "psychotic" Weight gain, high blood sugar, I was always tiny(110-115lbs) and on abilify I gained 20lbs and it raised my blood sugar so high I was considered pre-diabetic!!! Quit cold turkey, worst drug ever. Also my motivation went down to 0, it gave me heart troubles to where I couldn't exercise without arrhytmias, and I slept 13+ hours a day. F 26 1 years

3  schizzoaffective disorder I've been off and on this and many other drugs for some time, but had been on Abilify the longest consecutively before switching to another due to weight gain. I hadn't been experiencing any other side effects thankfully. Though gaining 35 + lbs in four months was enough for me to stop taking this drug altogether. I went from 130 lbs to 166 lbs and a healthy weight to overweight. F 28 4 months

3  Anxiety, depression Helped with depression, but made anxiety worse. The muscles in my neck feel very stiff. It helps with depression, but I don't know if the side effects are worth it, and I'm on the lowest dose they make. I may go off of this drug and deal with my problems without it. F 29 8 days

3  TLE panic anxiety hallucinations Numbness in legs, extreme weight gain 40+ lbs, stopped taking care of myself With the good came the bad and after my insurance jacked up the price from 25 to 100 I ran out and started going through withdrawals. The worst headaches I've ever had like a numbness on the back of my head. Looking back it helped but also hurt and after going through withdrawals ill never take abilify again. I've been on risperdal (got fat) Klonopin ( thought I was dying was hyper one minute and couldn't move the next) Zoloft ( major depression) Tegretol ( lathargic) M 26 1 years

2  To boost my anti depressant Terrible dreams, weight gain, insomnia This is a nasty drug. When you hear all the bad side effects on TV commercials, they aren't lying. I noticed a slight improvement in my depression symptoms pretty quickly after I started taking it, but the longer I took it, the less effective it was. NOT worth the side effects.I stopped taking it and dropped 15 lbs. without even trying and the bad dreams stopped. I didn't even have to wean off. I just quit taking it (with my doctor's ok).  2  Schizophrenia 1. Moderate to Severe Akathisia 2. Worsening of Positive & Negative Symptoms 3. "Demonic" nightmares every single night 4. Other EPS - especially stiffness 5. Headaches (note I am prone to headaches however) I found Abilify to be the least helpful antipsychotic I have taken. Taken between 10-15 MG over a course of 9 months, it never improved Positive or Negative Symptoms. While not sedating to a significant degree (I did find it sedating to some degree however), the movement effects and blatant lack of symptomatic improvement made it useless for me. Note - my schizophrenia is of a moderate level. I am completely disabled but can perform tasks on my own and even live on my own. M 25 9 months

1  Bipolar II Painful leg spasms, no help with rapid cycling, no help at all After taking this drug, I lost the ability to read for any length of time. Previously I was a reader, after Abilify it takes me a month to read a magazine. I cannot watch a TV show longer than an hour. This is where I am now, after slow improvement over about 10 years now. Horrible horrible side effect. I can hardly wait for the class action suit.seriously, BEWARE! F 52 3 months

1  Bipolar II, PTSD, Borderline Weight gain, horrible gas, improved blood sugar, increased ability to fall asleep and then the worst...apathy, anhedonia, restlessness, flat affect, no motivation, no joy, no creativity, suicidal thoughts because of feeling miserable. Lost interest in doing anything fun I'd done before, except pathological gambling, and that only because it helped to pass time. I went off it on my own 4 days ago and I am ALREADY feeling more like the old me. The old sweet, goofy, creative, dreamy, sometimes joyous, motivated, curious, funny ME. Not this horrible empty, restless, bored, apathetic, anhedonia, miserable thing that Abilify extremely gradually over 5 months turned me into. I literally could not bear to sit and do anything besides gamble; I didn't even like that but the high level of stimulation and preoccupation was the only thing I could bear in life to do. That is no life!!! I used to read, cook, see movies, sing, metal-detect, see friends, listen to music but with Abilify all desires to do anything besides gamble all went away. I can't wait for the old me to come back. F 47 5 months

4  Adjunct to Celexa Weight gain of 25 pounds :-( Abilify has helped as an adjunct to celexa and as an anti-psychotic. When I was extremely anxious/stressed/depressed I experienced disconnected thoughts and an internal monologue that has disappeared. I still suffer from depression/anxiety and my doctor is recommending buspar to add to the celexa and abilify. M 38 18 months
