CYMBALTA  (DULOXETINE):  Duloxetine is used to treat depression and anxiety. In addition, duloxetine is used to help relieve nerve pain (peripheral neuropathy) in people with diabetes or ongoing pain due to medical conditions such as arthritis, chronic back pain, or fibromyalgia (a condition that causes widespread pain). Duloxetine may improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level, and decrease nervousness. It can also decrease pain due to certain medical conditions. Duloxetine is known as a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). This medication works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances (serotonin and norepinephrine) in the brain.   FDA Approval Date: 2004-08-03 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Anxiety/Fibromyalgia Fatigue, extreme nausea, constipation, chills, tremors, sweats, jaw pain, random aching pain(like middle of the arm, then knee), ear congestion/ringing/pain, dizziness. This was a horrible experience. I was confined to bed or couch from 1st dose. I was told to stop after seeing stars when I would stand on Dose 6. I felt great for 48 hours after stopping and now experiencing some withdrawals. Nit as bad as when on but extreme nausea, dizzy, diarrhea, chills and tremors. I was told because of half life I can plan on 3-4 days of withdrawal symptoms. I would never recommend this medication and feel so bad for those suffering through it. F 45 6 days

1  Depression / Anxiety Worked well to decrease depression and helped level me out. But after a few years of taking it, I am realizing that I have changed a lot (not sure how much is due to the medicine or just life changes) My memory is foggy. Can't remember details of events or movies I saw last month. When I miss a dose I get dizzy and the terrible brain zaps. It's so distracting I can hardly make it through a day of work like that. I would not recommend this drug to anyone, as the long term effects (and pain in the butt withdrawal symptoms) may be very severe. M 24 4 years

1  Depression - Neck and back pain Extreme Nausea, Very Weak, Stomach Pain, Inconsistent Bowels, Muscle Aches, Blurry Vision, Spots and Floaters. Took this drug 7 yeas ago and it was a life savor. Was on it for 3 years with zero side effects and felt immediately better all the way around. A year ago i was diagnosed with anal cancer and immediately put myself back on it (under drs advise) because I was terrified of getting depressed again. Again, no problems during chemo and radiation. Went off again after treatment with no side effects. Went back on it 3 weeks ago and what a horrible experience. Just came out of the e/r for blurry vision, spots and floaters. After coming here to this site, it explains this past week of hell. I had a colostomy reversed in June and have had no problems. This explains why my stomach has been so screwed up. Frequent symptoms of having to have a bowel movement and not going. Then going so frequently with such pain. Flu like symptoms with severe chemo like nausea and vomiting. Had to leave work twice this week because I couldn't stand up. I didnt feel this bad since chemo. No more. Never had problems getting off in the past. Please God, let this be easy. F 52 4 weeks

3  Bipolar Depression Can't have orgasm (horrible!), get more depressed when higher than starting dose. Cymbalta helps my anxiety & OCD – which is probably the SSRI part because that's how the serotonin helps me at a low dose; but if it's raised I get more depressed and even at a low-dose I can't have an orgasm which is not fun at all. It's like purgatory! F 47 4 months

4  Depression and Anxiety Bruising (very easily) , frequent UTI's, Difficulties emptying bladder, Kidney Infection I started taking Cymbalta for Anxiety and Depression and overall felt it much improved my emotional state. I started on a low dose and eventually worked up to the therapeutic dose of 120 mg. My side effects started as the inability to realize when I had to pee. I would make it almost half way through the day realizing I didn't even pee when I got up. Eventually this effect caused the UTI's (2-3 month) and eventual Kidney Infection. I also began brusining very easily on my arms, legs and torso. I was instructed to add a small iron supliment, arnica supliment and topical arnica (which I did) with no relief from the bruising. My blood work came back normal throughout the testing over the months I was on the Cymbalta. Eventually the side effects were too much and increasing my Axiety and I came full circle to be back where I started. My Dr and I decided it was best to discontinue its use. It breaks my heart because at one point it felt like I'd be free of the intermittent emotional episodes. Cymbalta also works great for my mom who hasn't had any issues. Unfortunately my search continues... F 33 7 months

4  Anxiety, neck pain, ibs No sex drive, tired, weight gain Some things are a trade off. My neck pain was so bad it caused more anxiety. Had to work through some initial side effects. Some stayed and some went away. I prefer being tired and needing a nap and some extra weight over the pain. You just have to make a choice. With my neck pain, it was an easy one. F 52 3 years

4  For osteoarthritis Fine until prescription delayed in mail and went through 5 nightmarish days. First was two days of flu like symptoms: chills, sweating, muscle aches and felt feverish and the brain zaps! Then third day unbelievable vise like headache. 4th and 5th days nausea, brain zaps, dizzy, no appetite. Forced myself to eat toast, crackers, soup, jello. After every meal had to poop. Finally called doctor today to get 7capsules until mail order arrives. Also, lost 5 pounds in 5 days, probably because of the nausea and no appetite.Hoping I'll feel better soon. Never knew about these side effects. Will be talking to my doctor about getting off of it, although going on the internet and reading others accounts it sounds like it is not going to be easy.  1  anxiety, neck pain (arthritis) I have situational anxiety (I have a lot on my plate at the moment). Saw a therapist who recommended a psychiatrist who prescribed the generic version of Cymbalta. I took it when I had 3 days off. Chest tightness started a half hour after taking it, then dry mouth and dizziness. By the 3rd day I was "emotionless", unable to feel any emotion. When I thought of things that usually made me cry, I couldn't cry. I thought about how much I love my husband and I felt "blank". I was dizzy enough to not want to drive 25 miles to work, so I stopped taking it after 3 days. I'll handle the anxiety with talk therapy, massage, holistic treatments, etc. I'll be darned if I will become an emotional zombie from a medication stomping out my emotions. I didn't even feel like myself. I've been doing a lot of research and am so glad that I won't have to go through the "hell" that people who have been taking it for a while have to suffer when they want or need to stop it.  3  Anxiety/OCD Lots of energy/ weight gain I started 2 yrs ago and it helped so much. I praised this drug so much. Then 3 mths ago I hit major depression wanted it to go away. So my doctor prescribed 60mg instead of 30mg I thought it was going to help but the depression is back. I have two beautiful healthy children and a wonderful marriage. I just want to enjoy it again. I'm thinking about going off of it with help of my doctor. Could it be the medicine making me horribly depressed? F 35 2 years

1  Neuropathy/pain It helped me insanely when I started it. Loved it. But the ongoing side effects, the brain "zaps" were intolerable. There's now a class action lawsuit because of it. It took me just short of a year to titrate off the drug. The withdrawals were intense. I would not recommend this drug, as great as it was, because of the effects on your brain and the withdrawals. For anyone out there going through it, you'll make it. Cut back slowly and it WILL stop. F 58 4 years

1  depression/fibromyalgia brain fog, loss of cognitive skills. A dumbing down effect and affect. Stopped after 30 days, now my pain is worse and I have brain ZAPS and numb fingers all day.
