SYNTHROID  (LEVOTHYROXINE SODIUM):  Levothyroxine is used to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). It replaces or provides more thyroid hormone, which is normally produced by the thyroid gland. Low thyroid hormone levels can occur naturally or when the thyroid gland is injured by radiation/medications or removed by surgery. Having enough thyroid hormone is important for maintaining normal mental and physical activity. In children, having enough thyroid hormone is important for normal mental and physical development. This medication is also used to treat other types of thyroid disorders (such as certain types of goiters, thyroid cancer). This medication should not be used to treat infertility unless it is caused by low thyroid hormone levels.   FDA Approval Date: 2002-07-24 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  hypothyroid I have had a positive experience iwth Synthroid. Sometimes I have hair shedding, but I feel fortunate that it is minor side effect. I tried the generic form, however it did not work for me. My dosage has been the same since the day I started it. I was hypothyroid and had the radioactive iodine. F 56 15 years

1  Hypothyroidism I have had Hypothyroidism for over 20 years. Synthroid and Levothyroxine will cause some or all of the following symptoms after taking long term. 1.Fatigue not normal fatigue but a sick flu like fatigue 2. Joint pain. Dr will test you for inflammatory diseases and even diagnose you with fibromyalgia etc. 3. Brain fog. This is the absolute worse of symptoms. As it interferes with livelihood, parenting, career, outside hobbies etc. 4. Hair loss. Make sure your iron levels are up so the dr won't misdiagnose you. 5. Depression, anxiety and confusion. The uneducated Dr. will most likely quickly place you on anti anxiety and depression medication. And send you to a therapist. 6. Weight gain. The Dr. will tell you to work out and suggest foods to eat when you are actually already eating and working out. 7. Frequent urination. 8. Stomach bloating. 9. Swelling of extremities. 10. Cold hands and feet. I had to explain this to an ignorant Dr. that wearing a coat and layered socks in summer southern heat is not normal. 11. Dry, tough skin. 12. Poor vision. The DR. will instead send you to an ophthalmologist. 13. Nausea and upset stomach. These have been my experiences on Synthroid and Levothyroxine. I have been on all levels. The highest I've been on was 200mcg. At one point in my life, I was placed on Armour Thyroid before this medicine was reformulated. I did so much in that time span of life and so much good living then. No symtoms, clear thinking, excelled in sc excelled in school and gathering, great social life.I could write legible. Speak without forgetting and stumbling over words. The best in life. Synthroid WILL work in the beginning, maybe a few years or so.. but after time passes you will experience the above. I don't care how much positive affirmations and meditation you do. You must be your own advocate and research. Do not live a life with struggle because of this medication. Do not waste your life fussing with incompetent uninformed Drs. If they don't want to prescribe something with T3...Move on and find one who is knowledgeable. Family will most likely not understand this disease. 45 23 years

5  Hypothyroidism So minimal side effects that I can't recall what they are at the moment. I've found energy again. Synthroid saved my life, been taking it for almost 1 year now. I was feeling better within a week of taking it and continued to feel better and better every day for about the next 6 months. That's when it leveled off and I've been happy (and grateful) ever since. It took about a year or so to lose all of the weight I gained as a result of crummy thyroid. The weight just came right off after taking Synthroid. M 55 1 years

5  Hypothyroidism The only issue I have ever had was when different Doctors prescribed different thyroid meds. From Synthroid to generic Levothyroxine, back to Synthroid, then back to generic. My heart rate began jumping around, short of breath, sweating. Asked one of my Doctors when he refilled my prescription to put me on synthroid and keep me there. His response was "Levothyroxine is chemically the exact same thing as Synthroid". Maybe it is, but they act differently in my body. For me, they are not the same thing. I wound up in the hospital because of my heart rate jumping around. A Hospitalist over dosed me on Amiodarone and sent me into cardiogenic shock. My heart was working at only 20%, I was unconcious, my internal organs shut down, I had to be Trached, on oxygen, Cathitorzed, put on presser drips, fed through a tube in my nose, dialysis, I couldn't urinate, or poop. Was in the hospital almost 2 months. Doctors told my wife I would not be coming home. The Synthroid did NOT do this to me. The DIFFERENCE between .175 mcg of Synthroid, and .175 mcg of generic Levothyroxine caused the rapid heart and erratic heart rate issue, The Hospitalist overdosing me on Amiodarone to bring my heart rate down, almost killed me. As far as I know, that "Dr" is still practicing his version of medicine. When Doctors get the Synthroid dose correct, there are zero side effects for me. When not on enough, I have the typical low thyroid symptoms. When on too much, my heart rate goes wacky as described above. Doctors are supposed to titrate synthroid up, very, very slowly in the smallest dose available. It takes at least 30 days for this med to reach the full level for a specific dose in a person's system. Then up to 3 months before you feel the full effects of the medication. If your Doctor increases this med in too large of dose and/or increases it too quickly, it can kill you. Beware of wack job Doctors. They do exist, and all of their mistakes are in a cemetery.  1  Hashimotos Skin peeling/scaling, weight gain, overall unwell. NEVER have these issues with Levoxyl . Also haven't had the problem with the generics. I was great on Levoxyl and also ok when switched to the generic I rec'd from my CVS, but was inexplicably changed to Synthroid brand in mid 2015 and have been spiraling downward ever since.  1  Hashimotos Red eyes, migraine headaches, heart palpitations, strange sensation of head being disconnected from the rest of my body. Constant congestion. Body wide pain. Elevated blood pressure. Did I mention pain all over? Fought many times over the years to be OFF synthroid, but through one weird circumstance or another(doc refused armour, armour stopped production for awhile, went on cytomel, need t4 so add synthroid, get new doc who lets me take armour, new doc died, another new doc insisted I try synthroid again, almost died!) I would be forced into taking this crap excuse for medicine. Last time I took it I ended up in the hospital. I took myself off of it for close to 3 years and I never felt better! But unfortunately my tsh was 94.0 when I went to the doc and he said he couldn't keep me as a patient if I refused treatment(understandably) so I said I would only take armour. Been doing pretty good. I have none of the side effects I did on synthroid though. Sadly, doctors have a hard time accepting this medicine causes all that it did in my life. They push it like its the best, but not everybody is the same and this is a perfect example of why. My health was much better OFF of it than it ever was on it. F 45 6 years

2  Hashimoto's Bone pain throughout body I've just been diagnosed with Hashimoto's and was put on Synthroid. I was happy with it as was able to get out of bed in the morning and didn't have to nap in the afternoon. Appreciated having more energy and clearer thinking. However, I began to experience bone pain throughout my body. My doctor switched me to Levoxyl (50 mg) and the bone pain has vanished. F 64 3 weeks
