MIRENA  (LEVONORGESTREL):  This product is a small, flexible device that is placed in the womb (uterus) to prevent pregnancy. It is used by women who want to use a reversible birth control method that works for a long time (up to 5 years). It is also used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding in women who choose to use this birth control method. The device slowly releases a hormone (levonorgestrel) that is similar to a hormone that women normally make. This device helps prevent pregnancy by making cervical fluid thicker, interfering with sperm movement, and reducing sperm survival to prevent sperm from reaching an egg (fertilization). It also changes the lining of the uterus (womb) to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg. If a fertilized egg does not attach to the uterus, it passes out of the body. This device may also stop the release of an egg from your ovary (ovulation), but this is not the way it works in most women. Using this product does not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases (such as HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia).   FDA Approval Date: 2000-12-06 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Birth Control Mirena prevents pregnancy and produces much lighter periods, however, it also causes migraine headaches, swelling, and weight gain. I've had other symptoms like numbness and tingling in my arms, that was most likely attributed to the Mirena. I am finally having it removed after many years, so I hope it goes well I don't experience the Mirena "crash." (My sister had worse symptoms than I did and had it removed after a few weeks.)  1  Birth Control 30 days after getting the Mirena inserted I began experiencing constant panic attacks, pain all over, tingling in my head and legs, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, feeling like I was on a bad trip. Brain fog, memory loss. My gallbladder had to be removed, I had multiple infections. It took 9 months, post removal to begin to feel normal, then a flu shot started to bring it all back, now two years later I am still having symptoms. F 36 6 weeks

The first time you have sex and all the thick mucus cones out its kinda gross. Lasts about 3 days. I am so glad that I got the Mirana. More pro than con. F 37 1 years

1  contraception Terrible depression, lack of motivation, fatigue, loss of short -term memory, cramps, leg pain, back pain. I wish they informed patients more robustly about those side effects. Every time I came to the doctor, they said I was just depressed and the Mirena has such low level of the hormone that it does not cause any problems. It is not true. For some women like me, it causes terrible problems and I wish I had known it. Over five years the symptoms have improved, which is probably due to the fact that after 5 years Mirena releases only half of what it does initially (20mcg to 10mcd). I have read it on an official webpage. After taking it out, I feel like myself again. No lack of motivation. I wish women were not put on anti-depressants when on Mirena. The first-line response should not be to give anti-depressants, but to remove Mirena as the cause of the problem. Of course it leaves women with the problem of getting pregnant, which may in itself cause anxiety and worry. It is a problem, but Mirena does not solve it adequately. F 45 5 years

5  Contraception None Switched to mirena after being on paragard for almost 2 years. I bled so hard and so long with the paragard that I'd become anemic. Had the paragard taken out and replaced with mirena and my anemia is almost gone. I rarely bleed, don't have full periods at all, and don't have to worry about pregnancy. 36 4 months

1  Birth control The Mirena IUD was the worst thing to ever happen to my skin. I had it inserted when I was 18 and had no history of cystic or hormonal acne whatsoever. Three months after having it inserted, I had painful acne EVERYWHERE, even on my back and chest. I tried everything from antibiotics to Proactiv to home remedies and everything made my skin worse. I had the Mirena removed after 3 years, and I can now say ONE YEAR LATER that my acne is almost completely gone, minus scarring. I also had painful cramps almost all the time and even during sex, which has stopped since I had the IUD removed. I would not recommend Mirena to anyone. F 23 3 years

2  Birth Control I was on my second Mirena when I experienced TIA, a mini stroke. It took awhile to figure out what caused it. There is still no definitive answer, but I was a 33 year old active young woman who eats very healthy. My doctor did not think Mirena was the cause and wanted to keep it in place, but I ordered them to remove it. Within several weeks, I was starting to feel more exceptionally better and was so glad that I made the decision to have it removed. I do still have some slight facial paralysis by my eye brow, which only seems to be noticeable when I am tired. It took me a while to get my speech back to perfect as well. Removing the Mirena really helped speed up my recovery. Since having 1 TIA in your lifetime can increase your odds of having a full blown stroke, I have been making sure to exercise daily(even if only 20min) and really be careful around alcohol and second hand smoke. After researching Mirena on my own, it is clear that there are a lot of potential health risks. I really F 36 8 years

5  Painful Periods & Birth Control None I read the horror stories but this was my last and only hope (at age 45), so I went for it. How I wish I had done this when I was 20, it has changed my life. PMT/PMS has calmed down, there is spotting but that clears up and now I barely notice when having a period. I thought I could feel it for the first week or so but maybe it was just settling down, any discomfort was short lived. Over the last 30 years I have passed out and vomited at work, at train stations, public toilets, swimming pools, friends houses etc.... Missed weddings, birthdays, holidays and other special/fun occasions. I could also never eat properly around my period, had to eat very little and basic food, yoghurt and cereal for a few days. This has changed everything. I haven't had any children and was advised the fitting would be more painful. It wasn't pleasant, I felt sick, hot and very ill but for only 40/50 SECONDS - this is bearable and helps if you put some things into place before your appointment. I have listed below for anyone interested. At least give it a try there is nothing to lose, it can always be removed Good luck x Prior preparation: I started taking a magnesium supplement a couple of weeks before my appointment, it helps with muscle cramping and relaxing. I had an epsom salt bath prior to the fitting, again for the magnesium. I took some IBS anti-spasmodic supplements, to help with related cramping. Lastly, 30 mins before fitting I took painkillers.  4  Contraceptive, reduce menstruation Harder to lose weight/ weight gain, bit headachey Please remember the progesterone contraceptives (like the Mirena) are not a guarantee that periods will stop, they just have this effect in most people. Has mine fitted 3 years ago and after initial spotting lasting a few weeks, my periods stopped completely for 2 years. Recently I have started having a light period every 4 weeks (was NEVER regularly before). I'm not stressing about it. My periods don't even require protection and I like the convenience of my contraception being taken care of for 5years at a time. F 41 3 years

1  Birth control I'm on my last second run and I'm severely depressed. I've been on it so long I'm not sure anymore if it's me, my life experiences or mirena itself. All I know is I'm getting it out in a few months to find out. But then I'll be paranoid about getting pregnant. Being abstinent while you're engaged - or even married just to stop from having a second child is insane. I just know my depression is bad. Real bad and I'm scared one day I might take it too far. I read that others are having issues with depression as well as a side effect and I just want to be normal. F 24 10 years

1  Heavy periods Right after insertion, bleed continuously for weeks. Migraines, hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia for past 2 months. Gained 10 lbs. no sex drive. Had irregular bleeding until recently. Terrible PMS. No cramps but the flashes/ sweating is unbearable. Having it removed tomorrow. I was patient for 8 months but I can't take it anymore.  1  Prevent pregnancy Light bleeding , painful inserting and removing tampons, headache, hair loss, body ache I have had 4 kids and got this to prevent getting pregnant . I have been having pains while inserting and removing tampons I have to change my tampon just about every hour due to the fact it won't stay in by itself like it did before having this IUD inserted, I have been having bad headaches along with dizziness my hair has been falling out like crazy and my body is aching . I called to have it removed and because of my synthoms I have to go for an ultrasound to make sure it's in place right to make sure it doesn't need to be surgically removed before they will even schedule me to have it removed. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone . I wouldn't reccomend any IUD to any women I had the skyla and bled heavily for a year before i finally had enough when I was only suppose to bleed for 3 months ! Stay away from IUD's!!!!! F 24 2 weeks
