MIRENA  (LEVONORGESTREL):  This product is a small, flexible device that is placed in the womb (uterus) to prevent pregnancy. It is used by women who want to use a reversible birth control method that works for a long time (up to 5 years). It is also used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding in women who choose to use this birth control method. The device slowly releases a hormone (levonorgestrel) that is similar to a hormone that women normally make. This device helps prevent pregnancy by making cervical fluid thicker, interfering with sperm movement, and reducing sperm survival to prevent sperm from reaching an egg (fertilization). It also changes the lining of the uterus (womb) to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg. If a fertilized egg does not attach to the uterus, it passes out of the body. This device may also stop the release of an egg from your ovary (ovulation), but this is not the way it works in most women. Using this product does not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases (such as HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia).   FDA Approval Date: 2000-12-06 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Menorrhagia (Heavy periods). Infection, huge weight gain, mood problems, damaged bladder, enlarged and sore breasts, bacterial vaginosis, recurring/ chronic cervicitis, continually bleeding for 9 weeks straight until I had it removed at 9 weeks. This was the ultimate torture. I have not had any children, so had this inserted under general anaesthetic. I experienced contractions and a feeling of bearing down until it was removed. F 37

1  Heavy, painful periods Daily headaches, fatigue/lethargy, mental fog and moodiness. Also bloating/weight gain - 5 lbs in the first two weeks. Some minor breast pain. Spoke with nurse who said side effects generally lessen in 3 mos. However I'm not willing to live with this level of side effects for that long. Very bloated and have gained 5 lbs with no change in diet. I'm prone to migraines and we were hoping the Mirena would be better than the pill for that. Since insertion have had daily headaches. Having it removed asap. 44 2 weeks

3  To avoid getting pregnant Acne (also on back), weight gain, fatigue, cramping, stabbing pain, spotting, discharge (sometimes excessive, especially after 2nd Mirena was put in), nabothian cysts, random periods, upper lip hair, pain during intercourse, bloating. I had my first Mirena IUD implanted in June of 2008 after the birth of my 2nd child. I bled on and off for about 6 months before it finally evened out. At that point, I didn't have too bad of periods for awhile. I was already overweight at the time, so I may not have noticed my weight gain, etc. Although I'm sure it didn't help! I had a lot of the smaller side effects for the most part throughout that time. During those years is when I found out about my nabothian cysts as well during an exam, which I found out they are a normal occurence in women who have had children. I also read that Mirena could make it worse, but I am not sure if that is confirmed or not. In Oct 2013, I had my 2nd Mirena inserted, which was SO painful. I did it at Planned Parenthood. It hurt so much, my blood pressure dropped and I had to lay there for like 20 minutes. It was a pretty awful experience. I had pain for several days after. After this IUD, I had a thick yellowish, semi-odd smelling discharge for days on end, almost non-stop for several months, almost until now. It's annoying wearing panty liners every day! It slowed down the last month or two. But before then it was annoying. I was tested for bacterial infections, STD's, etc, and I always ended up being clean, so it has to be the hormones or something with the Mirena itself. They claimed it couldn't be, but nothing else would cause that. I also developed very large nabothian cysts at this time. They even showed me with a mirror once and it w F 27 5 years

1  Birth Control I had Mirena put in as birth control after the birth of my first child. Shortly after having it in, i began to experience severe headaches. These would turn into migraines. During one of these attacks, i lost feeling on the left side of my face, neck, throat and arm. I ended up in the ER. To make a really long story short, I was in and out of the ER and inpatient at the hospital for months. I lost out on the first 2 months of my babys life as I hardly remember anything. The doctors talked brain surgery to remove excess spinal fluid that was building around my brain. In the end, i was diagnosed as having a TIA ( mini STROKE) as well as all of the other issues and medical procedures that my family and I were put through. The Mirena caused the mini stroke and now I am left with suffering severe migraines that I am seizure meds for. We are hoping ( 2 YEARS LATER) that we have a control on everything and the tailspin it sent my hormones and body into have calmed down. Do your resear F 27 2 months

4  birth control/heavy periods I'm on my second mirena coil. I have no periods at all for around 5 years which is great. I noticed since I had the coil changed for a new one a year ago that I am getting a lot more spots. Almost one every day, sometimes quite big and lots of small ones under the skin. I've also noticed excess bodyhair on my belly and a ccouple of patches on my upper back near my shoulders. I seem to have extra hair on my chin too that needs removing weekly. However, I have had no issues with feeling depressed or down so for me, compared with other contraception, it works and the side effects can be controlled with some extra time invested in personal grooming.  3  Birth Control Hot flashes, acne I had my mirena placed almost 5 years ago, at first I loved it and didn't notice any side effects. But then about 8 months later I started getting hot flashes that I have never gotten before, one minute I will be sweating then the next I will be freezing! In the past years I have also began getting pimples on my forehead and chin, I am 34 years old and never in my life have I gotten pimples, not even in my teen years so I am blaming it on Mirena! I can't stand having hot flashes so I will be switching my birth control when it is due, at the end of next month. What I do like about this is the convenience of it, you only have to have it inserted once and you are good to go for 5 years. I am one who can not take pills because I ALWAYS forget so this was so simple for me! Also my period is almost non-existent, which I LOVE! I just can't handle the zits and hot flashes no longer, time to move on. F 34 5 years

2  endometriosis, birth control breast PAIN, fatigue, constant cramping in back, spotting, breakthrough bleeding, pain on insertion I had severe pain when mirena was inserted (I haven't had kids). Procedure was very quick. I did cramp for 1-2 days after insertion. About a week after insertion I started feeling very fatigued, my breasts hurt constantly and I had spotting. I have now been bleeding for 14 days. This has made my endo pain worse. I am sensitive to ALL hormones and even though this is not systemic it still affected me like all other hormones. I am having it removed in a week and getting the paragard. F 24 90 days

1  Contraceptive I've waited a long time and did not want to solely blame the IUD, but after 2+ years, I know that my life has not been the same. With Mirena, I have experienced: weight gain (40 pounds in 2.6 years), heavy mood swings, increased acne, hair growth on lip and chin, increased back pain, and frequent feelings of complete exhaustion and/or depression. This device really messes with your hormone balance, I wouldn't recommend it. F 29 2.6 years

1  Contraceptive Weight gain, acne, oily skin, no libido, CONSTANT yeast infections, hair growth Awful awful BC. I gained 15 pounds in 3 months, no amount of exercise wold get rid of it. My face was so oily I could fry an egg on it in the sun. With the oil came awful acne which I'm still struggling to get rid of. (I have never had acne in my life) I had no libido and a yeast infection every month. I also started growing hair on my neck. I felt awful and was constantly in a bad mood. I took it out and feel much better except for the struggle to eliminate the pimples. F 24 9 months

2  birth control i have used this method of contraception twice in between pregnancies. no major problems first time round and stayed on it for 5 years, only had it removed as severe back pain which immediately went after coil removed. different story second time round, had 6 months of heavy bleeding and initially lost alot of weight. after this time my periods completely stopped, gained all the weight i lost plus more and was constantly bloated, had severe headaches which again went as soon as removed. came off after a year and lost all the weight i put on following a healthy eating plan combined with exercise,no more headaches and bloated belly...would not use again as second time round horrendous.  4  Birth control. After the ridiculously heavy cramping initially (I thought I was going into labor again), I didn't have a single side effect or even notice I was on it. After about 2 years, my breasts started to become sore. I took a pregnancy test and it was negative so that was not a factor. Over the last few months the pain has gotten worse and I am scheduled to discuss this with my OB and possibly have it removed and go back on the pill. F 29 29 months

3  Contraceptive Just came off like 3 days ago ( already got my period ) I came off because of excess chin acne which I never had before, and now it's getting out of control and excess hair growth on chin, upper lip and arms, it's like I'm turning into a man, so I decided To take it out and see if the mirena is responsible for these side effects, have gain some weight but I think it's just me being lazy , but other than this very convenient, the placement was good, a little cramping after placement but just one day, light periods , not bad F 25 2 years

1  Birth Control Weight gain, hair loss, breasts leaking, breast pain (not tenderness- PAIN- scale of 8/10), fatigue, periods are crazy (on and off), cramping, false pregnancy symptoms, etc. I know people that loved Mirena. I am not one of those. Since it was put in I have been miserable. I have given it a good 10 months and it is not working and will be taken out ASAP. The doctor is testing me for both prolactinoma and breast cancer. It's crazy. F 31 10 months
