MIRENA  (LEVONORGESTREL):  This product is a small, flexible device that is placed in the womb (uterus) to prevent pregnancy. It is used by women who want to use a reversible birth control method that works for a long time (up to 5 years). It is also used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding in women who choose to use this birth control method. The device slowly releases a hormone (levonorgestrel) that is similar to a hormone that women normally make. This device helps prevent pregnancy by making cervical fluid thicker, interfering with sperm movement, and reducing sperm survival to prevent sperm from reaching an egg (fertilization). It also changes the lining of the uterus (womb) to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg. If a fertilized egg does not attach to the uterus, it passes out of the body. This device may also stop the release of an egg from your ovary (ovulation), but this is not the way it works in most women. Using this product does not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases (such as HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia).   FDA Approval Date: 2000-12-06 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Birth Control -Constant headaches -Unable to lose weight. Used to be 125-130. I walk alot and am unable to get past 140. -Moodiness, extreme depression, and high levels of anxiety -Vaginal Odor -Abdominal pain -Numbness in left arm that comes and goes -Brain fog! -Stomach bloat -Always tired no matter if I sleep in until 3 p.m. or not I have read that for breastfeeding mothers, the hormones leak into the milk causing the babies to have high steroid levels. I breastfed for 2 years. I was not told this by my doctor when recommended this. Also, I have read that if you have previous problems with depression/anxiety, your doctor isnt suppposed to recommend this as it will amplify that. I would NEVER recommend this hellacious birth control to ANYONE!!! im hoping I get approved for health insurance quickly to get this taken out Asap!!! $245 for removal is ridiculous!!! F 21 3 years

1  Endometriosis & with HRT Vertigo, blurred vision, depressed mood, foggy, weakness and nausea. Felt similar to symptoms of early pregnancy, but worse. Removed IUD after 2 days. Couldn't function. Symptoms went away soon after removal. Keep in mind that a study showed blood levels of Progestin from the Mirena is equivalent of 2 mini pills daily (taken continuously). This is not good for anyone who is remotely Progestin or Progesterone intolerant. It is not acting just locally, the hormone is very much systemic. Plus a study also showed it throws you into a state of premature menopause for 50% of users. F 32 2 days

4  Heavy, painful periods Excruciating pain for first few weeks. Later, light cramps only occasionally. Bleeding basically stopped at 6 months. Helped regulate mood. Painful sex. Once my period stopped, I was a very satisfied customer. Unfortunately, I entered into a relationship shortly thereafter and found sex to be very painful. Any pressure on my uterus (even just a full bladder) caused shooting pain. F 32 1 days

5  Prevent pregnancy I have just had the mirena coil removed after 15 years. Only side effect was no periods which has been great. I had a very positive experience using the Mirena and I would highly recommend this. F 39 10 days

1  birth control The mirena made me gain a lot of weight even though I had it for only 4 months. I couldn't lose the weight no matter what. Also, it caused me all kinds of side effects, hormonal imbalances, estrogen dominance, silicona and copper toxicity, etc. I recommend everyone who is serious about stopping all their unbearable side effects to watch the video on this page: mirenadetox. The mirena causes serious damage to the female body, and the only way to get rid of these side effects for good is to remove the mirena and take natural supplements, herbs and foods and consider natural therapies that will eliminate estrogen dominance, help restore the balance of progesterone and estrogen hormones, and detoxify the body from all the toxins present in mirena such as silicone and copper. mirenadetox has been immensely helpful to my recovery and I seriously recommend it F 38 4 months

2  birth control back pain, ovarian pain, pain in the uterus, sever migraines, loss of appitite, moodiness,, inflammation in my bladder, bleeding thats lasted longer than a month, clot bleeding, occasional loss of sex drive I got Mirena the beginning of this year and I knew what the expectaions of having it would be the inconsistant bleeding. However after having it for a while the bleeding would last a month to sometimes longer with clotting along in the mix. I also had the strings shavedd down a little to help with the inflammation I was having in my uterus. And now 9 months later I am still having problems with bleeding and spotting for long amounts of time along with pain in the uterus and ovaries and I have lost a good majority of my appitite. As well as on the occasion anytime my fiance and I have tried to get intamate the thought of it overwhelms me and I get put off by the situation. F 24 9 months

5  To prevent pregnancy At first insertion I had serious and painful cramping but I settled in quickly, eventually no longer getting a period which has been nice. I would highly recommend this contraceptive. I also prefer it over taking a pill every day for the first 7 years I took birth control. While I'm unsure the long term implications of a pill, I feel better knowing my Mirena is more so creating a mucus lining so semen can't fertilize an egg. I DID have an ovarian cyst at 3 months with the lack of ovulation but that passed. F 26 8 months

5  Contraceptive Extreme cramping and spotting the first few months after insertion. Acne once a month. Cramping once a month. Light to no spotting once a month. I have to wonder if a lot of the complaints about this are actually because of the product OR just postpartum issues (or because it was put in a woman who had never had a baby before, which is not recommended). Because i had just had a baby I had hair loss, mood swings, depression, cramping, bleeding and many more symptoms. however they weren't due to the Mirena device, They were just normal postpartum symptoms. I really think a lot of the complaints are misplaced. Blame your own body and hormones :P My periods have become pretty nice, slight spotting every few months with slight cramping and acne once a month. F 27 5 years

4  Avoid Pregnancy Hair growth on lip, chin and more hair on legs than before. I get aching ovaries once a month, but haven't had a period since the initial insertion. Noticed more acne on my face, back and shoulders that I never had before. Lost 30lbs while on Mirena...didn't notice any weight gain. Will still continue to use Mirena but are taking the necessary steps to prevent the side effects; ie: Laser Hair removal, proactive body & face wash, and going to the gym 3+ times a week to avoid any weight gain.  3  heavy periods and birth control The mirena coil and I have a love hate relationship. I had abnormal cells burnt off and this put in to stop heavy periods. It did it's job which gave me a new lease of life. However it may sound vain but it's soul destroying when you once had clear skin and then all of a sudden your skin turns oily, I have lots of spots some bigger than others, my face is oily and shiny, I get random stomach cramps and horrendous mood swings, put on a couple of pounds which I have never been able to do before. Peach fuzz on upper lip. I would say only use it if you really need to ie heavy periods etc. If it's for birth control just avoid it F 22 2 years

Had it taken out and i feel like a new person! im so much happier and the lil things dont piss me off like before i would not recommend it.  1  Birth control painful breast growth (2 cup sizes), extreme bloating, pregnancy-type symptoms (food cravings, mood swings, tiredness) I was on the depo for years and loved it. I switched to Mirena so that I could better plan for pregnancy in the future. The initial implantation was HORRIBLE. I took painkillers prior to the procedure, but was in severe pain for two days. I did not get a period, but I was used to this, and happy about it. I did feel pregnant. The bloating and food cravings were out of control. My breasts grew so much that I ended up requiring a breast reduction surgery. I have always had migraines and they increased in frequency while on Mirena. F 25 8 months

4  Birth Control I had a difficult adjustment period, sore breasts and sensitive nipples were prevalent for a month or so. Gained about 10 lbs, but haven't had the best diet, either. The one thing that has bothered me about mirena is I've noticed an excessive amount of hair growth, facial, leg etc. which I didn't have before beginning Mirena. It's nice not to worry about birth control, but I wish it was weight neutral and didn't cause facial hair. F 24 1.5 years
