MIRENA  (LEVONORGESTREL):  This product is a small, flexible device that is placed in the womb (uterus) to prevent pregnancy. It is used by women who want to use a reversible birth control method that works for a long time (up to 5 years). It is also used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding in women who choose to use this birth control method. The device slowly releases a hormone (levonorgestrel) that is similar to a hormone that women normally make. This device helps prevent pregnancy by making cervical fluid thicker, interfering with sperm movement, and reducing sperm survival to prevent sperm from reaching an egg (fertilization). It also changes the lining of the uterus (womb) to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg. If a fertilized egg does not attach to the uterus, it passes out of the body. This device may also stop the release of an egg from your ovary (ovulation), but this is not the way it works in most women. Using this product does not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases (such as HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia).   FDA Approval Date: 2000-12-06 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  Endometriosis, heavy bleeding Mirena coil inserted under general anaesthetic-terrible non-stop erratic bleeding for first couple of months. Ended up in A&E as haemorrhaged at one point. Trying to last out the 6 months but still anaemic. Also had to increase my dose of citalopram up to 40mg as depressed. Now have feelings of hot sweats. Only would recommend if last resort.  2  Prevent pregnancy Weight gain, mood swings, anxiety, upper lip/chin hair growth, horrible cramping I gained probably 10-15 pounds after getting the mirena put in. I've had it for probably 5 or 6 months and have cramping almost every day. Very often I get cramps in the bikini line area/where the thigh meets the bikini area and it's very sharp unbearable pain that almost puts me in tears. Very short temper lately, and boyfriend can feel it scrapping him. I did have minimal bleeding the first two months and no period since, but all the cons are not worth not getting a period. Looking for a new obgyn and getting it removed asap. F 20 6 months

1  prevent pregnancy Horrible pain being put in. Feeling of being pregnant, more so a balloon in my uterus. Constantly tired, wanting to sleep. Kind of more irritable. hungry, and extremely gassy. I would not get it ever again. Or even recommend someone else get it. After reading all of the reviews, I wish I would have gotten the depo shot again. F 19 2 days

1  Heavy periods, causing anemia. Fell out after 9 months, also caused me extreme mental problems that I have not suffered before. Thought I might end up in a mental hospital. I would not recommend this to anyone.I had no idea how bad I felt until it fell out. 2 weeks before it fell out I had extreme anxiety, I was in tears at my doctors surgery. He tried to put me on depression pills but I new I wasn't depressed. 6 weeks since its gone, I am now back to my old self again. I am so cross about this. F 48 9 months

1  Heavy Periods Terrible depression that drove me into a mental ward! My then-gyno said that he had never heard of people getting depressed on this. What rubbish. This is a "quick fix" for gynos. And don't let them talk you into getting a hysterectomy when this horrible mirena fails. I had an endometrial ablation, a non-medicinal and minimally invasive day surgery and the results have been fantastic! Light and regular periods. Good sex life. Try this after mirena and BEFORE hysterectomy. Good luck my fellow women! Cathy (Australia) F 47 6 weeks

5  birth control, supress periods ovarian cysts, acne Based on the reviews here, it seems like I am the only advocate for this great little device. I've had two and going on my third next month. I have nothing but good things to say about my experience with Mirena. My periods were always heavy with very painful cramps and PMS bloating...you name it. I am a single divorced mother and was in a monogamous relationship at the time i decided to get one. From the beginning I felt the benefits: my periods were lighter to non existent, and my moods were much better. My libido has always been good and it has remained at a healthy level. Yes, i've had a few ovarian cysts that have been manageable and i keep them on check. my acne is manageable and a small price to pay for peace and tranquility of not having to deal with periods. Along with that it's a great contraceptive methods and i do not spend on pads, pain medications. Just the sheer joy of not even going to the feminine products aisle is awesome. My hormones are at good levels since i get them checked. I recommended to my friends. In fact, I am not looking forward to the two months I am off it when get the current one exchanged. I've thought of going off it just to see how I am doing. But the thought of having those horrible periods I used to have scares me. I am having another one inserted. :) F 37 10 years

2  heavy menstrual, anemia and cramping Heart palpitations, body aches, foggy thinking, anxiety/panic attacks, bleed the whole 2 months, uneasiness, moody ,dry skin I keep having heart palpitations ended up being admitted in hospital elevated heart enzyme as like a heart attack. ..thank GOD cardiac cath ruled out heart attack, Cardiologists and Internal Medicine doctors says it was anxiety. But I keep having serve anxiety and palpitations in ER several times, so my Family Doctor recommend IUD be removed ... since I had a history of being sensitive to synthetic hormones. . Once removed I started feeling better within 48 hrs but had HEAVY bleeding with large clotts for 5 days . Maybe would of worked for me but way to many side effects... I'm treating my menstrual issues with natural remedies ..herbs,diet and yoga ... F 46 2 months

1  Birth control Had placed approximately a month after the birth of my 4th child. Despite having Graves' disease and well into the hypo-thyroid stage for the past 3 years my obgyn had never had a previous issue providing the Mirena before to any clients. After approximately 4 days after the insertion- I began to feel extremely suicidal / even homicidal -luckily I was able to identify these highly abnormal emotions and called my obgyn immediately to let them know that I needed it removed asap. At once after the removal - I began to normal after the hormone began to leave my body. If you have ANY type of thyroid issue - I would NOT recommend this type of birth control. Do your research & talk to your physician. F 36 4 days

3  birth control Weight gain, hairy upper lip and chin, back pain, ovarian cysts, leg pain/tingling, mood and some pelvic pain. I have had mine in for 5ys. Getting it taken out next month and idk if I wnt to get another. I just want to see if my body will adjust and go back to "normal" the leg pain is annoying and im always bloated. I wonder because of the lack of menstruating is causing water weight? F 31 5 years

1  birth control alt to pill Moodiness, weight gain of 6 pounds in 21 days with no change in eating, severe cramping, breast tenderness, IBS, gassy, lower back pain, migrating pain across abdominal area, more frequent migraines Got on Mirena because of my migraines. Dr wanted me off pill though the other meds he had me on eliminated my migraines. He thought less hormone would be good. HUGE mistake. I have had 4 migraines in 21 days. Gained 6 pounds though I am exercising more and eating same (I went from 123 to 129 very quickly with only change being insertion of Mirena). While I haven't changed my eating (because the scale keeps moving up) I feel hungry all of the time. My nipples are so sore I can barely wear a bra. Pain is worse than mastitis. I had severe cramping right after insertion. (I have had 2 vaginal births without epidural and can handle some pain). Codeine and muscle relaxer barely contained this. It did ease up by that night but I have been cramping like I am having a period ever since and experiencing lower back pain. I am done done done with this and have an appt next week to remove it. I tried really hard to wait it out as I have friends that love it but it simply didn't work for me. I just hope my weight drops and pain fades as soon as this blasted thing comes out. F 40 21 days

5  Birth Control & heavy periods Cramping during insertion. Slight cramping for 1 or 2 days every 3 to 4 months (same cramping as a period). I had it inserted in between cycles, so it was more uncomfortable, but tolerable. I haven't had a real period since it was "installed" 3.5 years ago. I did not have it inserted during my period though. I was in between cycles. So the insertion was very uncomfortable, but tolerable. every 3-4 months I have very minimal spotting for 1-2 days. It's so minimal that a panty liner is more than enough protection. Once the 5 years is up, I'm definitely getting another one put in. I could not be happier with Mirena. It honestly makes my life so much easier, and my sex life way better. F 27 3 years

1  prevent pregnancy Anxiety, Panic attacks, dry skin, butterfly feeling in stomach, pregnancy symptoms, weight gain, depression, mood swings, feeling of hopelessness, IBS, transient ischemic attack, migranes, implantation STAY AWAY from this IUD. True, I never had a period, but I'd rather bleed than go through these horrible side effects. The bad out weighs the good F 31 3 years

1  birth control My doctor lauded this as the last birth control I would ever need since I was 45 instead of getting my tubes tied. The first few days I had dizziness, "brain fog" and my blood pressure spiked. The dizziness and BP issue subsided, but then it was ZERO sexual interest, brain fog, disorganized thinking, depression (no history of depression/anxiety prior), severe acne, lethargy, thryoid issues, joint pain, and the worst -- I ballooned 25 pounds -- all in my stomach I literally looked pregnant. (I have always been thin). After 6 months i had it removed. I am three months post-removal and I am still bloated, still breaking out, still depressed, joint pain, and now I am not producing progesterone naturally so my last three periods have been extremely heavy and have LARGE clots. My doctor is at a loss as to how long this will go on. Mirena is the devil -- I feel like I will never be well and back to my old self again. Stay away from this product F 46 6 months
