 Type: Rx Drug

COMBIPATCH  (ESTRADIOL; NORETHINDRONE ACETATE):  This medication contains 2 female hormones: an estrogen (estradiol) and a progestin (norethindrone). It is used by women to help reduce symptoms of menopause (such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness). These symptoms are caused by the body making less estrogen. The progestin in this medication helps to reduce the risk of cancer of the uterus which can be caused by using estrogen. Women who have had their uterus removed do not need the progestin and therefore should not use this combination medication. This medication may also be used by women who are not able to produce enough estrogen (for example, due to hypogonadism, primary ovarian failure). If you are using this medication to treat symptoms only in and around the vagina, products applied directly inside the vagina should be considered before medications that are taken by mouth, absorbed through the skin, or injected.   FDA Approval Date: 1998-08-07 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Hot flashes, night sweats….. WEIGHT GAIN, my hair has been changing (ticking me off!) Didn't think I was loosing it but I'll pay more attention now after reading all the reviews. Spotting. Recently I seem to be having "break through" bleeding. (Frequently!) Slight headache. It took about 3 weeks for me to get relief from those damn hot flashes and night sweats, but when the patch finally kicked in all the menopause symptoms stopped. My biggest issue is the patch peeling up around the edges. This happens not too long after I put it on. I clean the area first with alcohol and dry it completely (with my blowdryer!) This is my biggest complaint. Maybe if it were made of a more Band Aid like material it would stay on better. Its like putting a hard piece of contact paper on your skin without getting bubbles! I've already had more of an issue with the weather getting warmer and my skin getting sweaty. It peels right up around the edges. F 53 6 months

4  constant hot flashes, mood swings Initially headaches and very swollen tender breasts. Stopped patch to allow breasts to settle down. hot flashes returned with a vengeance two months later, so started patch back Cured hot flashes, have some ups and downs with mood, maybe patches are not quite all the same dose? I use a waterproof band aid to cover my patch, sort of like the ones that go over IV's in the hospital. Works like a charm. No leaking of water on patch and it stays on for the whole 3 days. for those with weight gain, I was gaining weight through the middle without the patch, age related, menopause symptoms I believe, so I dont think the patch makes that worse. Just have to eat less sugar, and exercise to curb that. F 54 12 months

4  Hot flashes, osteoporosis None so far I started going through menopause in my late thirties, recently went on osteoporosis medication and doctor thought combo would work better. After 15 years still suffering from hot flashes and some hair loss and thought hrt may be beneficial for these symptoms also. But now think it may make hair loss worse. F 55 7 days

3  Hot flashes, foggy thinking Initially, I thought I was going to have a heart attack. I had heart palpitations, I had a sharp pain in my arm. I immediately took it off. Later, I cut it in half and for about 6 months was fine. Over the last year, I noticed I have lost about 1/3 of the thickness of my hair and have thickness around my tummy, hips and upper thighs (back area). I am going to go off of it and see what happens.  3  Hot flashes, irritability, night sweats Gained weight in midsection, hair loss, extreme bloating in belly, felt as if it deadened my emotions and caused me to feel as if everything was in a fog. I suffered from more than 50 hot flashes every 24 hours, and I was totally miserable. It completely cured all of my menopausal symptoms almost immediately. F 56 2 years

4  Surgical Menopause Bloat, Hair loss, mild rash at site(not troubling), weight gain in middle, increased migraines, Acne (mild), mild bleeding (also not that troubling), tiredness. Given the side effects I mention, I live in fear of running out of these. They are a lifesaver for surgical menopause mood swings, edginess, lack of focus, lack of sleep, sweats!! F 53 4 years

5  Constant hot flashes, day and night I've been taking Combipatch for a year now and I can honestly say it's given me back my life! I was suffering from constant hot flashes day and night, as well as weight gain and depression and Combipatch has helped so much! I've lost 20 lbs. of the 40 lbs. I gained prior to going on the patch and hopefully will continue to lose. I've had no unpleasant side effects thus far. F 54 1 years

3  Menapausal symptoms Just finished two weeks sample. Started bleeding on day 9-15 Began patch b/c I gained 6 lbs, mostly in my middle after being the same weight for 25 years! Also, my hair was thinning beyond belief. Also, have 3:30AM wake up calls with night sweats. After patch, night sweats and interrupted sleep are gone!! Weight still there and hair seems the same but not worse. It will take a while to see if I lose weight and regrow lost hair. Since the weight and hair loss started before combi patch, I don't directly attribute it to patch. Don't like the bleeding tho. Will continue for another month or so and re evaluate. F 52 2 weeks

1  Menopause Side effects??? I would have welcomed them! the patch was coming off within 2 hours! And my skin is as dry as a popcorn fart. Why not just make them like the tagederm Patches those usually seal Sri tight and stay on. If you can get them in! F 58 1 days

2  perimenopause increased anxiety, hair loss, acne, insomnia, pms type feelings all month long The progestin in this (norethindrone acetate) is very androgenic. For me, this patch increased my anxiety, gave me acne (which I never have), made me very sleepy but too anxious to sleep. I am very progestin/progesterone intolerant. I went back to vivelle-dot (estrogen only patch) and felt better within a few days. Calmer and focused and able to sleep normally. F 50 3 months

3  Early menopause due to chemo Significant hair thinning. Weight gain in abdomen, hip, + thighs. The patch improved my sex life significantly. I just had tummy tuck, and have been working out to improve my health. My hair is becoming so thin, I am thinking of wearing a wig. The patch did improve vaginal dryness. I would rather use lubricants during sex with my husband, than have to resort to wearing a wig. F 45 4 years

5  Depressed,no energy, nightsweats The first couple months I spotted lightly a few times but then that was it, it went away. I do have a red mark when I change patches but that goes away after a day or so, NO site itching as others complained about. The Combipatch has made a huge difference in my overall well-being. Prior to the patch I would cry a lot for no reason, felt exhausted, suffered with major night sweats, had wrinkly skin and a loss of muscle tone. All have improved greatly. I took myself off the patch after about 1 yr because I was feeling so good I didn't think I needed it. Well, into my second month of being off the patch the depression, exhaustion, extreme anxiety, night sweats all returned. Needless to say, I went back on the patch and I am once again feeling GREAT! It's so good to feel happy, energetic and just feel like me again! I feel sorry for those ladies who can't get this kind of relief. F 57 2 years
