COMBIPATCH  (ESTRADIOL; NORETHINDRONE ACETATE):  This medication contains 2 female hormones: an estrogen (estradiol) and a progestin (norethindrone). It is used by women to help reduce symptoms of menopause (such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness). These symptoms are caused by the body making less estrogen. The progestin in this medication helps to reduce the risk of cancer of the uterus which can be caused by using estrogen. Women who have had their uterus removed do not need the progestin and therefore should not use this combination medication. This medication may also be used by women who are not able to produce enough estrogen (for example, due to hypogonadism, primary ovarian failure). If you are using this medication to treat symptoms only in and around the vagina, products applied directly inside the vagina should be considered before medications that are taken by mouth, absorbed through the skin, or injected.   FDA Approval Date: 1998-08-07 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Hot flashes, insomnia, high cholest Immediate relief from hot flashes (I was having 2/hour around the clock!). Immediate relief from anxiety and depression. Life had become joyless and my cholesterol was increasing inexplicably. The two reasons I was so against HRT were blood clots and quality of life. Both of those things appeared to be at risk as a result of menopause itself and life was no longer appealing, so I “caved”. Initially, I would have given it a 5 - everything was SO improved. Then, the breast tenderness (pain). Evening primrose oil supplements helped a lot. My bra size has increased from B to C cup. Then, the bleeding. The ONLY good thing about menopause is the cessation of bleeding and now here it was again! But that happened only a few times and seems to have stopped. Then, the heart palpitations. I increased my potassium and that has reduced, but not halted. Then, the ITCHING! I have no idea why but I itches all over. The itching would even wake me out of a sound sleep. That has stopped also. Now - the weight gain - bloating - water retention. My md section looks 4 months pregnant. I gained almost ten pounds in 6 months though I’m eating much less due to fullness sensation and exercising regularly. My toes and fingers look like little sausages. And yet, in lieu of all this, I tried going off the patch for 24 hours before I slapped one back on in a frenzy. I think I heard the Calvary bugle as I peeled the backing. Not sure what I’m going to do about the bloating and weight gain. It’s not for vanity that I care (well, maybe a little) but I read about a severe side effect on webmd of “abdominal swelling” and “intestinal swelling”. That just sounds unsafe. I am open to recommendations. I believe, in the balance, my menopause symptoms being as severe as they were, I’m still happier on the patch. I’m sleeping and I’m not sweating half my body weight every hour anymore. That’s something, I guess. A great book on this subject is “Outliving Your Ovaries” by Dr. Marina Johnson. The title says it all... F 53 6 months

4  post menopausal symptoms Initially, I used the entire patch. For my size, I think it was too much and experienced similar heart palpitations like many of the other women. However, I cut it in half and then to a quarter and that worked well for a long time. The positives, I had two children in my 40's and at 50 had trouble with my weight, my thinking seemed slower, dryer skin, etc...after about 6 weeks on the patch, I began to experience a notable difference and felt great. Like other ladies, I thought I no longer needed it and went off of it gradually. Over about 5 months, I gained almost 20 lbs and my body did not respond to any dietary changes or exercise. My arms swelled up, my mind felt foggy and I was tired all of the time. I added a potassium supplement to my regimen which seemed to help, but my body still felt strange and then the night sweats...I saw a very caring NP who did a round of blood tests and an ultra sound to check for cysts, etc...and she recommended that I go back on the combipatch, so I am giving it another try :) F 56 2.5 years

3  early menopause Breast swelling/tenderness. Extreme mood swings. Vaginal area seemed "lifted" and tighter; no bladder leakage. Recurring bleeding every 1-2 weeks (after 4 years of having no period). Some bloating in midsection. I originally went to my dr office because I thought my previous rx was expensive, but come to find out the combipatch was a lot more money. The dr (the person I usually saw had just moved to a different office) said that I needed something to help with osteoporosis (which I have been diagnosed with) so I thought that was a plus. Almost immediately, my mood changed. I felt this anger (almost rage) for no reason. My breasts were so sore that going without a bra was a no-no. They had to be cupped. It took a few weeks for my mood swings and breast tenderness to go away. I really liked that I felt "lifted" and tighter in perineum area. The bladder drips totally went away, there was no need for lube during intercourse, my breasts were fuller - I felt great. The most frustrating and discouraging thing was having a period EVERY 1-2 weeks! After reading up on the side effects, I thought it could take up to a year for my body to finally stabilize so I tried to stick it out, but after 6 months I couldn't take it anymore. My primary care physician told me to go back to my GYN. She ordered bloodwork which indicated my FSH was very low. GYN ordered more bloodwork so hopefully I will be back on my previous medication which was a localized low dose hormone. My previous medication was ok, but I will gladly go back if it means no more period every 1-2 weeks. F 47 7 months

5  Hot flashes menopause My only symptom is breast pain and, fullness. A miracle for me. I suffered 4 years with this dibilitating disorder. I tried over the counter remedies as well as different herbal products which seem to be ineffective. Wish I had not waited so long to seek help for this problem. Combipatch has helped me with my mood ,and overall well being. F 51 4 weeks

5  Only post menopausal Rx w uterus One bad batch due to heat exposure rendered patches ineffective but Pharmacy replaced at no charge. No symptoms! No hypertension as on other hormone treatments. Convenient and easy to remember only twice a week versus pills or creams daily. Transformed me metabolically to more youthful interior and exterior Very expensive if not cost prohibitive and hope prices will eventually go down F 64 4 years

4  Hot Flashes Initially I had a few acne spots around my nose, but only for the first two weeks. I do feel that my waistline has "thickened" but I have actually lost 4 lbs since starting the patch. When I don't drink any wine, the "thickening" goes away, so I think it is more diet driven than the patch. The primary side effect has been Breast tenderness / Breast pain. I definitely went up a full cup size almost immediately (B to C). Some crampy feelings the first week, but not since. I had been taking HRT pills since I was about 36. When I stopped nursing my youngest child, I went into immediate early menopause. When I tried to wean from it last year, the hot flashes, headaches, memory issues and general malaise were terrible. I tried over the counter "estrogen" replacement that was completely worthless. My pharmacist recommend the patch so I talked to my doctor and she agreed for me to try it. She believes the Breast tenderness to be a concern, so we're watching that for the next two months. I'll try cutting the patch in half as others have done to see if that helps. It did also help with vaginal dryness. F 59 3 months

4  Hot flashes, mood/memory issues Breast tenderness, cramping, spotting, difficulty losing weight Completely stopped hot flashes (30+ per day) and my mood and memory seems to be back to normal. However, I am not happy about the side effects and may try half a patch to see if this reduces those, but still keeps hot flashes and other issues at bay. I don't plan on stopping patch at this point as it has made such a huge positive difference in my life. F 54 7 weeks

5  Severe hot flashes After being on the patch for a little over 1 month, I got my period back and have had it for 3 weeks straight at this point, with some clotting. This patch has saved my life. I had such severe hot flashes that I was unable to sleep more than 4 hours, was terribly depressed and everything seemed to revolve around my hot flashes. I was having upwards of 40-50 a day with severe sweating. I can not think about not being on the patch so I've cut the latest one in half. I pray my hot flashes don't come back and my period stops. If not, I will have a hysterectomy. F 53 2 months

2  insomnia Back Pain, Breast Tenderness that turned into breast pain, constant cramping. Breakthrough bleeding that did not stop had to always wear a pad....ugh! Hair loss, weight gain (just a little) some mild depression probably from not sleeping. On average a good night I will get 4 hours of sleep and I always wake up during those 4 hours........Bad nights are no sleep to 1 hour. I have not noticed any significant sleep improvements! Did not help with my insomnia at all, actually I think it made it worse. My doctor put me on the higher dose after 2 weeks on the low dose and symptoms got worse. I stopped the patch after 1 month x2weeks. I will update if being off the patch has helped or made things worse. Any help for insomnia would be greatly appreciated. I don't take sleeping pills to worried about those side effect. Took patch of in the morning and cramping has subsided a bit but, still bleeding even more. I wish I had done more homework before starting this..... but my doctor said I was g I wish it had worked. F 54 30 days

3  osteopenia, vaginal dryness mild headache, fatigue, weight gain/bloating in mid-section, breast soreness, bleeding I started menopause in my mid-30s and am taking this primarily because it is said to improve bone density, and I was deathly afraid of fosamax. Since yesterday I've been experiencing more than breakthrough bleeding. I'm not sure if I should be concerned about this. I'm not thrilled about the weight gain, and am concerned about reading all of the comments about hair loss. F 46 14 days

3  HRT Sadly @ this age there can be SO many issues. I have some food intolerances, makes me flush. I also think it's really questionable as to the reliability of the dispensing of a patch, especially when you consider what we're doing to try to make them work...Thought I had the WORST hot flashes; not so. Flushing from allergies. SPOTTING! Weight gain? or inability to lose weight? some skin issues, thinning hair, hard to say if that's from the patch, occasional headaches, hard to put that on the patch. Overall anything is better than suffering extreme hot flashes, which I'm starting to think are from a myriad of other things along with menopause . To experience the feeling that you're going to spontaneously combust!! It's hard to believe that other women went through this in the 20s & the 30s . Of course, conveniently we get to blame big Pharma for everything . Ideally what it would be great to know about is how some women function who have NEVER HAD THEIR hormones FUSSED with ! Starting at the ages of 13 14 15 and 16. And now we have the morning after pill, and another IUD!!! These companies are just looking for trouble aren't they ? So when you have stats that I can use to compare what it's like to be a woman who hasn't had her body completely contorted by the time she's 25 then I guess I'll know exactly what the real side effects are ! The patch doesn't stay on! NONE of the patches stay on! The ONLY way to get the patch to stay on; get yourself what is known as a sterile clear window bandage, take the patch apart put it in the center of the window, then put the bandage on with the patch . Only the manufacturers will know if this is changing the effects of the distribution of the patch. Maybe they should look at the window bandages and figure out how to incorporate a patch into it (duh) because the damn patches are expensive! Having them come off is pretty much enough to stop using them, when you consider the cost of the bandages and the patch . I guess we women are always supposed to spend more money, suffer a little more, get a little less out of life! we can thank the manufacture for this one this time COME ON FIX THE STUPID APPLICATION!'
