COMBIPATCH  (ESTRADIOL; NORETHINDRONE ACETATE):  This medication contains 2 female hormones: an estrogen (estradiol) and a progestin (norethindrone). It is used by women to help reduce symptoms of menopause (such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness). These symptoms are caused by the body making less estrogen. The progestin in this medication helps to reduce the risk of cancer of the uterus which can be caused by using estrogen. Women who have had their uterus removed do not need the progestin and therefore should not use this combination medication. This medication may also be used by women who are not able to produce enough estrogen (for example, due to hypogonadism, primary ovarian failure). If you are using this medication to treat symptoms only in and around the vagina, products applied directly inside the vagina should be considered before medications that are taken by mouth, absorbed through the skin, or injected.   FDA Approval Date: 1998-08-07 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  lack of sleep, vaginal dryness weight gain in the middle, red marks/scars at the site where patch was applied, hair thinning Started a year ago to improve sleep, relief dryness, increase energy.Did some reading and seemed a good idea to give back estrogen to the body as so much of our health is influenced by it. I wasn't experiencing severe hot flashes. For the first six months didn't noticed much side effects, rare light bleeding. Seemed to be helping with dryness( excessively at times) and sleep was much better, had less nights waking up at 3 am unable to go back to sleep. Then maintaining my weight, which I kept constant for years, became a problem despite being active and watching what I ate. Gained all in the middle, breast, back. Not happy about it as fat on the waist is more risk. Then the red marks... itchy and red skin under the patch. Polka dot belly. I realized this is not right so I started to doubt the efficacy and cost benefits of wearing it. I am glad I found this forum, that helped me decide to go about the next stage in my life without it.Sure for hot flashes seems to be a great help as many women here attest for. Doctor said no need to wean into the process, I am stopping it today and deal with less sleep if needed than with extra pounds and red, scared skin. For dryness one doctor recommended good old - olive oil. Considering the $150/ month prescription cost that seems more reasonable. It's interesting how much of our interest in hormone therapy is real and how much a myth created to sell us miracle drugs or make us vulnerable because we are simply passing our reproductive age.  5  Hot flashes No side effects so far I started having hot flashes about a year ago after starting menopause. I was having them off and on all day long, about 18-20 per day and they were severe and embarrassing. I tried supplements (black cohosh, estroven, evening primrose) all with minimum effectiveness. I would wake up at night wet with sweat. I was getting very depressed and miserable. The combipatch has changed my life. It works almost immediately, the day I applied it, I have not had another hot flash! so far no side effects but only using for about 10 day. The only con is that it is super expensive($135 for a month supply). F 52 10 days

5  Menopause and hot flashes Bleeding a few days every month. Mostly light bleeding and occasional heavy. I haven’t had anymore hot flashes and sleep well. I feel much better than when I wasn’t on it. I just wish there wasn’t spotting. I’ve had an uterine ultrasound every year to rule out any issues and no problems so far have been found. I go again this week for my annual ultra sound. Hoping all is good. F 63 5 years

5  Vag dryness, anxiety, hot flashes Breakthrough bleeding Truly a lifesaver! Brought my life back from crippling anxiety and horrible hot flashes. The ONLY DOWNSIDE is bleeding. I have to wear a pad every single day. My gynocologist did an ultrasound and found nothing unusual. She told me that the bleeding could last 6 months so it was up to me to weigh the pros and cons. I’ve decided to stick with it as I feel so much better with the patch than without. I might try cutting my next patch in half as my doc said some women find that stops the bleeding by reducing the amount of estrogen a little. Not giving up though! (I tried using estrogen & progestin pills before the patch and I had terrible side effects so for me the transdermal way is best.) F 53 2 months

5  Hot flashes, crankiness, terrible i Breaking out, oilier skin This has been great for me. I was in severe menopause, according to hormone levels. I use 1/2 of one patch and change it every 3.5 days. My skin has settled down a lot now- not breaking out so much and it’s great that it isn’t so dry like it had been. Weight is fine/same- that wasn’t affected. My mood is so much better, too. F 50 5 months

5  Serious severe menopause symptoms A few headaches but considering the patch has seriously lessen the severity of my menopausal symptoms, I am so so happy. I had 24 of 32 menopausal symptoms and was miserable. I could not sleep because of all the night sweats, hot flashes, insomnia and everything else you can imagine. Within a day or two, I was able to sleep through the night!! Even though my doctor is concerned because I had cancer when younger, I just couldn’t take the symptoms anymore. I will just have to go the doctor regularly and have my mammograms, blood work and check ups. F 52 3 weeks

1  menopause I was on combipatch for about 3 years. I took it because of the severe hot flashes and joint pain I was having due to menopause. The warning label says it increases the chance of breast cancer. Because of the way the warning was poorly written, I thought it meant that if there was breast cancer in the family, it should not be taken. I thought I was safe because there is no breast cancer in my family. 10 months after I stopped using Combipatch, my yearly mamogram showed breast cancer. The cancer I have feeds off of estrogen. I am positive that Combipatch was the cause of my cancer. I have had genetic testing and there are no mutated genes that would have caused the cancer. Please stay away from this drug. You don't want to go through what I and other breast cancer patients have gone through F 3 years

4  Hot flashes, anxiety, vaginal dryne I started the Combipatch about 6 months ago and it’s been wonderful ....no more hot flashes and sex life is back to normal! The BIGGEST drawback for me is continued bleeding and spotting. Doctor did an ultrasound and nothing abnormal appeared (a small fibroid but nothing to worry about). I wear a pad every single day and it’s getting to be so annoying. Doctor suggested increasing dose of progesterone. F 52 6 months

3  Early Menopause Swollen, full breasts. Went from a 34B to 36C bra size. Gained weight around my belly. Feel bloated all the time. I am 5'2 and petite. Heavy bleeding with cramps every two weeks. Today felt tired and slight chest pain. Took my BP 150/100. Never been that high in my life, not even during pregnancy. Removed the patch immediately and retook my BP an hour later. Down to my normal 110/80. Called my doctor. I am not using it again!! Hot flashes and night sweats did resolve for first 2 months, then this last month night sweats came back. Increased energy for first 2 months, then back to tired. No change in mood or memory. F 43 3 months

4  Panhypopituitarism It improved hot flushes and vaginal dryness immediately. It seems to have maintained my bone density as well. I don't like the coin marks on my thighs from the irritation/reaction to this patch, but the doctor told me I'm not drying the area adequately before sticking on a patch but I am. I make peace with those side effects because it far outweighs the benefits. I'm happy with the results it gives but I'd like to be free from it someday. F 39 5 years
