ACTONEL  (RISEDRONATE SODIUM):  Risedronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss to help maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Risedronate belongs to a class of medications called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2008-04-22 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteoporosis I am a long distance runner (marathoner) and I have experienced a heaviness or tightness in my legs that has greatly slowed my speed. I've also developed tendenitis in both achilles tendons. Moreover, it did not improve bone density! M 18 months

1  bone loss Severe muscle & joint pain. Pain in the chest, legs, hips, arms. Flu-like symptoms. I was unable to function 24 hours after taking the 35mg dose. I am very active and exercise regularly. I couldn't walk up stairs without pain, walk comfortably or sleep at night. Advil did nothing to reduce symptoms. I will increase my calcium intake and seek other alternatives. F 58 2 days

4  Osteopenia This is the second time I've taken Actonel (weekly). I stopped when I lost my Rx plan (it became too expensive), and then I resumed about a year or two later, and I have had NO side effects at all. After reading these reviews though, I am very concerned. Most of the people who wrote in seemed to have an immediate reaction to it so I'm hoping I won't develop any of these side effects. Until my next Dexascan, I have no way of knowing if there are any positive results from this Rx. I also think the price could be reduced by less packaging. I can remember to take a pill every week without this silly dispenser. F 49 6 weeks

1  Ostopenia This was the worst medication I had ever taken. I took 2 doses( one per week). The first week I experienced very moderate aches in neck and hands. The second week was like a truck hit me. I woke up in the middle of the night with severe pain on my upper back that radiated to my chest. This was mainly on my left side, my right side was not as bad. I thought I was having a heart attack. My hands hurt so much I couldn't get dressed with out assistance. This affected my job and could not even type. My last dose was one week ago and although my hands are much better, I still have weakness in them and hope this will eventually go away. The pain has traveled to my wrists and now to my lower back. I am extremely active and I am horrified that a medication that is supposed to help you can completely cripple you. I will NEVER take this medication or anything like it again. It is my plan to take vitamins and minerals that aide in maintaining healthy bones. After reading so many negative side effects, I am amazed that this drug remains on the market F 49 2 times

1  loss of bone density Severe intestinal distress: sharp pains, nausea all the time, cramping, bad heartburn. Have been on Protonix for years due to acid reflux, and should never have been given this drug. Have been off Actonel for two months with little decrease in side effects. Am now facing hospital procedures to look for ulcers and measure acid production. I will never again take a medication without a thorough investigation into how it works and what dangers it can present. Even though we pay specialists to know these things, we can't always trust them to watch out for our best interests. F 55 4 months

1  osteopenia, osteoporosis It has been 10 days since I took one 35 mg Actonel tablet and I am just now recovering from its side effects. After 24 hours, I experienced flu-like symptoms which included night sweats, 101 deg. temperature, aches, bone and joint pains and muscle weakness. All week, I had pain in my left leg and groin, moving at times to my chest, upper back and hips. Transitory headaches. I could hardly walk and had to suspend my exercise program. I felt older and depressed. I took aspirin, then ibuprofen and finally Aleve, which was the only med that worked in relieving my pain. Never again. I had a hard time finding your web site. Is there anything you can do to publicize on the actonel web site? It is helpful to know that one is not alone in experiencing these side effects and may help in developing medicine with fewer debilitating side effects. F 74 1 days

2  osteopenia Flu like symptoms, muscle weakness and discomfort, bones while not sore seem to creek like cracking your knuckles only in shoulders and back instead of hands!! hip and back muscles tender and severe muscle spasm in back last week. I have been taking actonel for 6 month...it started fine but side affect seems to be getting worse the longer I take it. I have not had a bone scan since starting but I have decided to stop taking the medication. I will see my dr. next week. I have never had any medical problems and am fairly athletic...this has made me feel 20 years older!!I will try calcium and vit. D. and see how that goes.Ridiculous cure worse then the disease!!  2  osteopenia I have heart burn almost daily. Before I started taking actonel I rarely had heart burn. (I am on the once a week dose.) I have been having trouble with my ears and popping in them, and also my balance seems to be off. I am concerned that this could be related to the Actonel. F 58 6 months

1  osteoporosis Was taking the 70mg. dose once a week for approx. 3 months. Had a very sore throat - trouble swallowing and lost my voice and had an ulcer-like sore in the back of my mouth. Bad joint and back pain which was worse than anything I have had before. I would rather take a chance on my bones deteriorating than keep on taking these pills. F 67 3 days

1  Bone loss I had such stabbing pains in my stomach. My esophagus felt as if someone was pricking it with pins. I took an over the counter antacid which caused me to double over in pain. I was unable to eat or sleep. I was on the Actonel for 6 weeks. It has been 5 weeks since my last dose and my esophagus still feels as if I had swallowed acid. F 49 6 weeks

2  osteopenia pain [more than usual] L.hip, GERD, difficulty sleeping, pain in chest to right of breastbone and in lower back (feels like a disc just above waist level wants to 'pop' out), dark stools, diarrhea, signs of GI yeast bloom (odor, itching). I was gratified to read another's comment about 'blood effervescing' .. When I tell my GYN my body feels carbonated -- and that's EXACTLY how it feels --I suspect he will think I'm bonkers. He once prescribed HRT to 'protect' my bones, but I couldn't tolerate the side-effects. Too bad. Osteoporosis was diagnosed in my elderly mother when she was my age; my daughter in her 20's has signs of osteopenia already. I can't recommend this medication, especially for anyone with a delicate digestive system. F 53 2.5 months

3  moderate to severe osteopenia Have not experienced any significant issues with Actonel and indications are that the bone density has improved. However, I've recently developed GERD but don't know if Actonel is the cause. I had GERD problems a few years ago prior to taking Actonel so it may be unrelated. F 58 2 years

1  prevention of bone loss Stomach pains, acid stomach, muscle cramps, gas, bloating, hip pain. Stopped taking it because I would rather face the future with osteoporosis rather than developing some disability because of actonel or any other drug, such as lipitor......loss of muscle and tired all the time. If I wanted all those symptoms.......I will just wait til I get older.....67 and taking charge.... F 67 7 months

1  loss of bone mass I am into my second month of taking the once a week Actonel. I have had severe flu-like symptoms that have caused me to miss work and planned events (and I'm not a wuss-- I have had frequent severe migraines for years and work and play through them with medication). I often woke up with a headache and nausea, burning feeling in stomach and appetite loss, body aches in particular back ache. I am not at all happy and can't imagine continuing with this drug if these side effects do not subside. F 55 6 weeks

1  low-level bone loss lumbar region two days of headache; flu symptoms; insomnia; severe neck/shoulder/arm/back/hip/wrist pain;painful jaw and teeth; ears feel plugged; face flushed. Much better by 3rd day after dose. Felt about 20 years older for those 2 days. Now that I have read responses on this site I realize that I'm not unusual. I felt as if I'd swallowed poison (ironically, no stomach problems!) I am NOT taking this drug again - nothing with these side-effects can be beneficial. F 59 1 days

2  osteoporis prevention achy joints, tired all the time, headaches, muscle cramps in legs I was taking Evista and my doctor asked if I wanted to try Actonel so I would take once a week. I wondered why I have been so tired all the time as it is not like me. I don't have a family history of osteoporis, so I'm going to ask to go back to Evista. F 50 9 months

2  ostiopinia first noticed weak fingernails, then stiff neck, headache and lower back pain I think I'm too young to take a drug for the rest of my life for a non-life threatening condition. I agreed to try it, but after six weeks have decided to quit. The deciding factor was a report on severe jaw bone damage to patients having a tooth extraction while on Actonel (most were on the IV form for cancer treatment, but some were taking the weekly 35 mg dose). It's interesting that information on this problem went only to oncologists and dentists, and only the injectable form of the drug carries a warning about the jaw bone link. I am not aware of any long-term studies and am aprehensive of serious side effects after long-term use. F 57 6 weeks
