ACTONEL  (RISEDRONATE SODIUM):  Risedronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss to help maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Risedronate belongs to a class of medications called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2008-04-22 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Osteopenia Nothing first day, not much the second. Then trouble sleeping. Sudden, excruciating pain in mouth and large sore appears on tongue. Heart felt like it is coming out of my chest. Pulse has dropped to 40. Thought I was having a heart attack. Tennitis is worse. Thirsty all night. Cannot concentrate. I'll never taken another one of these. Hope all problems go away. Will take chance with supplements and exercise. Dangerous drug! Glad to find this website. M 64 1 days

1  osteopenia, breast cancer meds Immobilizing joint pain, especially hands, most noticeably thumbs, which lasted the better part of 6 days following my once-a-week actonel. Extremely painful to the touch, with some swelling in my thumbs. "Stiff" neck to the point of not being able to turn my head more than a couple of inches. Also, extreme fatigue, exhaustion, for 3 days following the dose. Discontinued actonel, and now, 10 days later, all seems considerably improved except my right thumb, which has not improved at all. I was taking this to counteract the effects of arimidex, but I think I will try additional calcium supplements rather than go through the symptoms. F 65 21 days

1  oesteopenia 1st time I had severe pain in right sciatic nerve so much that I couldn't even roll over in bed to get out. Hard time walking with it being so severe. Created pain in two spots on my back where I had fallen 2 months prior. Then next time severe swelling in knee to the point of not being able to bend it at all and knee felt like it was going to give out. I will continue to exercise and eat well and take calcium supplement. I do not want to continue this drug. These side effects are debilitating. How can I function like this. I will put in a request to see a specialist at bone density clinic. F 50 3 weeks

1  Osteporosis I have taken Actonel 2 years. Also put on cholesteral lowering drug at the same time. My doctor and I were continually adjusting my cholesteral drug. Side effects I was experiencing: excessive pain all over my body; arms, legs, etc. Could hardly get out of bed in the morning - felt like I needed a walker - my legs felt like 2-ton bricks that I could hardly pick up. Hard time just walking up stairs. Would sit down on the floor with my grandsons and literally could hardly get up - felt like I was 100 years old. I stopped the Actonel (without my doctors advice) - low and behold. I feel 1000% better. No pain anywhere - except for general aching for a 64 year old woman - which I consider "normal". Its YOUR body - you need to do research on every drug you take and make adjustments. Your doctor does NOT know your body better than YOU!!! I am not saying its wrong for everyone - just do your research an I wish you all best of health!!! F 64 2 years

3  Osteopenia Not sure of side-effects at this time. I was on hormone replacement therapy because I "listened" to what my doctors said. They know, don't they? Well, looked what happened to HRT. Now the rage is Actonel. Drug companies push these drugs to doctors who comply. All drugs have side effects. I'm going off Actonel. I'm in charge of my own body. M 64 10 months

1  osteopenia After taking actonel for 2 months, I began to experience nerve and joint pain from the chest up. I thought it was because I was doing a lot of road bike riding and the goofy position you are in. It continued to the point of being debilitating. The nerve lines of my arms felt like they were bruised. My neck killed me! I developed trigger finger in 2 fingers on each hand and the bottoms of my feet felt stone bruised. I went off the Actonel and within 1 week began to see improvement (that's only 1 doses) within a month I was almost back to normal, except for the feet....that took longer. Then my doc switched me to Boniva...within 2 doses, the senstations began to develop again in my arms and hands. Then he put me on Evista....I've half-heartedly been taking it for 6 months and now my trigger finger is back with pain and swelling of my hands and feet. Has anyone else experienced the TRIGGER FINGER? It's back in full force. I've seen my bone density tests and they are not good....but is the F 58 3 days

2  osteoporosis (mild?) stomach cramp and severe bloating. back pain and pain in knees when trying to jog. I'm 5ft 1inch/ 160 cm. very small frame. Extremely fit and active ie Yoga, windsurf, walking etc. On bone scan as part of a medical trial found below average bone density. Never smoked but veggie. I think that skeleton frame isn't taken into account when density considered. I'm stopping from now to see the effects but will continue with vit D& calcium and see if there is a more natural way of dealing with this. F 58 5 weeks

1  osteoporosis The third week I took Actonel within 24 hours I had extremely sharp pain, redness, and could not tolerate light in my left eye. This lasted 48 hrs. My Ophthalmologist thought I had Conjunctivitis. The next week after taking Actonel my left eye again had sharp pain, redness and light intolerance. Again, this lasted 48 hours. I stopped taking Actonel - but continue to have ongoing problems with my eyes primarly dry eyes and redness but thankfully do not have the extremely sharp pain and sensitivity to light. F 69 4 weeks

1  Osteopena Severe joint pain to the point that when I stood up I had to stand a few moments before I could start walking....I felt very sluggish and the medicine kept me from walking for exercise. I quit after 6-7 months and was soon feeling good again. My doctor would like me to start on it again, but I will never take this medicine again. It was scary. F 61 6 months

1  osteopenia Took Actonel (35mg once a week) for 2.5 years before reactions became serious enough for me to try to find the cause. Initially, I attributed the fatigue, bloating, constipation, leg cramps, and joint pain to growing old. About 2 months ago, I started getting an itchy, burning, red rash all around my neck and on the inside of my arms. And then I started getting a very painful "stiff" neck that made opening my mouth or moving my head painful. Applying heat did not help, but surprisingly, a cold pack did better. It took a while before I realized that the onset of these afflictions generally ocurred on Sunday afternoons - I take my Actonel as prescribed on Sunday mornings. I took an Actonel yesterday and will not ever take another. Sometimes, for me at least, adverse reactions do hot occur until there has been long-term usage of a drug. F 72 2.5 years

1  Osteopenia Severe stomach pain, severe headache in one spot(felt like an electric drill going into my head), severe joint pain, swelling from the elbows down to my fingers, depression, 'wavy' vision. This is one drug I will NEVER take again the rest of my life! It was in May that I took 2 doses, one week apart. I felt like I was 80 years old with severe arthritis. After the first dose, I thought maybe I had the flu. By the time I had to take the second dose, I was feeling a little better. Then after the second dose, my vision began to be 'wavy', and I had the worst piercing headache I have ever experienced. Through the day, my joints began to swell and I had terrible pain. I kept looking at my hands, because they looked twice the size. And I thought, "am I getting rheumatoid arthritis?" Not to mention the severe stomach pain that took 3 days to pass. Then, somehow, I found this website. And after reading many of the comments, I realized my symptoms were probably from this drug. It took at least 3 months for me to feel better. Here it is September, and I am pretty sure the symptoms are gone. Although I still have occasional joint pain/swelling. But it is muc F 51 2 weeks

1  Osteopenia General aches. Worry about what it might do. Am very concerned that P&G are not telling the full truth about this drug after reading about the Blumsohn case in England (search Google for Blumsohn). I suppose this is true for many drugs but this is the one I care about. F 58 1 years

2  Low Bone Denisty Scan Flu-like symptoms, blurry vision, extreme pain in my right leg, joints are very tight feeling - making it hard to move. I feel a tightness all over - from jaw to toes. It is hard to swallow at times. I will not be taking the medication any longer; reading the other comments I understand that these side effects can be harmful long term. I believe that any given medication should make a person feel better, not give a person more pain! F 39 2 weeks

1  osteoporosis stomach cramps, pain in the chest, severe indigestion I am disappointed that I did not have any evidence that this drug was at all useful. There seemed to be no way that the doctor could assess whether or not this drug was effective. F 63 2 years
