ACTONEL  (RISEDRONATE SODIUM):  Risedronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss to help maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Risedronate belongs to a class of medications called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2008-04-22 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteopenia painful swollen fingers(joints)I was very aware of my heart beating (I would not call it palpitations) increasing heartburn. I was always hungry, weight gain, low energy, pain in neck and hip. Difficulty sleeping, cloudy urine. After reading this web side I took my self off actonel. My symptoms got slowly but steadily worse over the years. I have been tested for arthritis (negative) The Doc has changed my thyroid medication. I have taken thyroid meds for more than 30 years after surgery for thyroid cancer. I took my last actonel on March 28. After 2 weeks it is too early to say if things will improve and if all the symptoms are the result of actonel. I like to warn people who have taken actonel for a short time to be aware that it may take a long time for side effect to become apparent. F 62 3 years

3   QUESTION.... WELL I HAVE ALWAYS TAKEN CALCIUM, YOGURT, CHEESE, SUPPLEMENTS, KEFIR, VITAMIN D ETC... BUT MY PROBLEM IS RELATED TO LOW TESTOSTERONE LEVELS... SO DO NOT MATTER HOW MUCH EXCERCIES OR CALCIUM INTAKE I TAKE FOR OSTEOPOROSIS THAT IS BECAUSE TESTOSTERONE HELPS THE ABSORPTION OF CALCIUM AND I NEEDED THAT AND ALSO A DRUG TO STOP THE LOSS DUE TO MY SEVERE OSTEOPOROSIS IF A I QUIT THEN MY OSTEOPOOROSIS WILL WORSEN BECAUSE BASICALLY IA HAVE BEEN A VERY VERY HELATH CONSCIUOS PERSON MY MOTHER HAD OSTEOPOROSIS SO I ALWAYS HAD A LOT OF CALCIUM INTAKE IN A DAILYU BASIS.... AS I MENTIONED CHEESE, SPINACH, MILK, YOGUT, KEFIR, VITAMIN D AND CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTS OSCAL ETC ETC MAYBE IN MY CASE IT IS GENETIC BUT I AM AFRAID THAT DIET AND EXERCISE ALONE WILL NOT WORK FOR ME IF I DO NOT TAKE SOME MEDICATION BECAUSE OF THE REASONS I WROTE THAT IS WHY I AM ON ACTONEL SO FAR I HAVE EXPERIENCED NONE OF THOSE UNDESIRABLE SIDE EFFECTS AND I KEEP MY FINGERS CROSSED I AM LOOKING FOR PLEASE READ MY COMMENT M 66 3 months

1  Osteopenia After about one month of taking actonel, I started to feel a slight pain in my arms and thumbs. Over the next two months of continued use of once weekly actonel, my slight pain became so severe in my arms and thumbs I was having a difficult time even moving my arms and thumbs. Also, was getting headaches that I didn't corelate at that time with the drug, until I read this website and saw how common this side effect was. I am finally almost back to normal after six months off the drug. I went to physical therapy for my arm pain and that was a great help. Hopefully, something better will come along for all of us. It is scary to have this diagnosis, but we just need to take care of ourselves more and take calicum as well as bone health vitamins. F 51 3 months

1  osteopenia Continued from previous column..... The reason I am writing this is.....we all need to build our bone mass and, since we can't take this Actonel, why don't we network and find out what we can do to build our bone mass by exercise (what kind) Vitamins (what kind and what milligram or unit/) diet (what?), etc. We can help each other see if we can combat this osteopenia, osteoporosis without taking these dangerous drugs which, as was so often stated in this column, does not give a good quality of life.  1  Osteopenia Hi to all of you.. I went to my endrocrinologist today because I was diagnosed with Osteopenia last month. I had all the blood tests, urine tests, etc. and today I was told I had to go on Actonel (first he recommended Boniva but I was leery of it so he prescribed once a week Actonel. Now..I am very allergic to many meds, I am very allergic to many foods and I have had many stomach, digestive problems including pancreatitis from taking different meds...I told the doctor this and told him how cautious I am when it comes to taking new medicines. It was explained to me that there would be no problem with this Actonel. I asked about the muscle/bone pain I had read about and was told if I did experience this, it would disappear a few days after I took the Actonel. I take 1,000 units of Vitamin D, 2 Citrucel chews, 1 Women's one a day, 30 mg of Prevacid, and Lotrel for bloodpressure...all these every day. I AM NOT GOING TO BEGIN TAKING ACTONEL SINCE I READ THIS COLUMN AND FEEDBACK!! Th Let's try to find out more about this, research it and help each other. Our physicians don't seem to care or don't know how bad the side effects are and, if their prescribing these meds are instigated by perks given to them (bone density machines, etc.) by the pharmaceutical companies, we need to band together and help each other with our experiences and research to get healthier! No one knows our bodies like we do and many doctors can't believe it when we tell them our side effect symptoms. They claim the benefits of Actonel will outweigh the side effects. I don't think so after reading what everyone has written in this blog...is this a blog? Hope everyone is feeling better and that the side effects are dissipating....Email me with any suggestions, recommendations or results...let's try to help each other! F 60

2  Osteoporosis in left hip No side effects for the first three weeks after starting Actonel. However, for the last two weeks I've had an aching and feeling of weakness in both legs (primarily the quad area). My right elbow with tendonitis has also been hurting lately. This on and off aching seems worse the few days after I take my weekly dose. I have secondary-progressive multiple sclerosis and thought maybe this was a new MS symptom. However, I haven't had any new MS symptoms for seven years. After reading some of the comments, my symptoms seem more in line with the side effects of Actonel than MS. This aching feeling is similar to how I felt after a dose of Neulasta, the white blood cell booster. F 44 5 weeks

1  Osteoporosis Tinnitus, severe, debilitating headaches, nausea and dizziness. I am a nurse of 31 years and I always had faith in the drug companies. No more! I took Actonel for 7 weeks and didn't put 2+2 together until I was relaxing in Cancun, listening to the ocean with the ringing in my ears all the time. Started thinking about when it began and then the bells went off. Came home and researched Actonel. Made an appointment with an ear doctor who said it can't be the Actonle, 3% is such a small group. Ha! I told him the headaches were keeping me from work due to dizziness. He ordered an MRI which showed possible multiple sclerosis. Follow up tests showed it wasn't. Blood work is all normal. Tinnitus is getting less and less, but still have on occasion those blinding headaches, nausea. Even migraine tablets (Imitrex) don't help. Headaches last about 24 hours. An ear specialist told me if I took the drug for 7-8 weeks, it would take 8-12 weeks to leave my system. My internist now wants to put me on F 51 7 weeks

1  Ostopenia I took 2 weeks of Actonel on the advice of my primary doctor and oncologist and will NEVER go on it again. I encountered severe knee pain -- the same pain as when I was on Fosamax. The medical community should be shot for prescribing these drugs. I could hardly descend a flight of stairs. I noticed immense pain the day after taking both drugs and then pain would subside. Will probably return to Evista which while expensive ($100/mo.) did not give me the horrible reactions of the other drugs. Consumers Beware!!! F 60 14 days

5  osteoporosis NONE!!! maybe some side effects in other patients have to do with interaction with other drugs I think maybe I have to wait more time because I have only been for 10 weeks I was terrified when I learned that I hade osteoporosis and I read about the terrible side effects of medication but I was scared of my severe osteoporosis and the bone fractures in my spine or hip and I began the treatment M 50 10 weeks

4  SEVERE OSTEOPOROSIS -5.4 None so far. None at all. I take it and wait ONE HOUR before having my breakfast, I remain sitting or standing and do not take any vitamin supplements the day I take Actonel (saturdays) I had the choice of Forteo but there is history of cancer in my family and I did not want it. I did not want FOSAMAX because it seems to be weaker and I need something very strong. I am a Male 65 years old with cervical artrhitis but in other aspects healthy, no diabetes, no hypertension, I walk 2 miles daily. M 65 4 weeks
