ACTONEL  (RISEDRONATE SODIUM):  Risedronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss to help maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Risedronate belongs to a class of medications called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2008-04-22 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteoporosis Bone density increased, as test results showed density of a 52-year-old at a drugstore test center. Fortunately I stopped taking it and then have non-reversible damage to gums and jawbone. I am angry that there is no measurement of when to stop and the effects are delayed and non-stoppable. I would appreciate studies on age-relationahip to continued use fo Actonel. F 82 2 years

1  Osteopenia pain in Achilles tendons. stiff knees, shoulder pain/stiffness, thumb lower joint pain. Took it for 4 months and could barely walk after sitting still for just a short time. Stopped taking it for 4 or 5 months and the joints finally went pretty much back to normal. To give it a fair chance as I am also on other meds for colitis, I took one more dose a few weeks ago and some symptoms are back - sore Achilles tendon, stiff knees, stiff back. Won't be taking any more meds of this type. F 58 4 months

3  Bone density loss I didn't have any side effects til I started having a raspiness in my voice. My ENT Spec. diagnose me as having Laryngopharyngeal Reflux. My gastronologist said Actonel probably caused it. So I discontinued it. I have a bone density test every three years and the first test after taking Actonel did show a rise in bone density, that was the only time. I am now having trouble with my jaw teeth wanting to fold in. I went to an orthropedic today for a back injury, he told me that we're going to have bone density loss to a certain degree as we get older no matter what medicine you take. F 71 10 years

5  OSTEOPORISIS Extreme pain in hands and wrists with swelling. had to take of rings. stomach pain and diarrhea. stiffness in neck. I thought I was dying until I read these articles. Had I done by research more thoroughly I would never have taken the actonel. I am done for good. My hands hurt so bad I can hardly type and I do this for a living. Please do not take this medicine. I am hoping to get this out of my system as soon as possible. I could not sleep and could not stand for my husband to hug me it hurts so bad. I cried while lying in bed and got up to try and get some relief. Can't open the doors and was so glad to read these postings because it all makes sense now! I will call my gynecologist in the morning and tell her what a terrible drug this is and I will find healthier ways to treat my bones. Does anyone know how long this pain will last? F 56 6 days

2  2yrsago osteopenia/now osteoporosis Diarrhea, bright cherry red dime size spots, severe joint pain in hands, slight off balance - don't feel sure of my footing sometimes, abdominal pain, flatulence, sometimes slight headache (probably lack of liquid due to diarrhea), general ill feeling on 10/8, took 1/month medicine on 10/5, and sleeping problem. 2 yrs ago diagnosis osteopenia started 1/wk but severe bone aches after 2 wks, then shingles, so discontinued. Last month, diagnosis osteoporosis, so restarted with 1/day, no side effects, but forgot and ate food a few times, so tried 1/wk, fine, then 10/5 1/month dose..10/8 severe abdominal pain, bright red dime sized spots on thighs, some bruise marks; felt ill, then 10/9 diarrhea at least 12 times today. Noticed yesterday and today that I feel off balanced at times. Pain in joints in hand. I have arthritis and have been on celebrex and sulfazalizine (doctor is aware of these medications) which are to reduce pain and inflammation in joints caused by arthritis, so that might reduce pain from Actonel as well, I am guessing. Sulfazalizine and actonel can both cause kidney damage and I was being monitored for any kidney complications prior to starting Actonel, but I am worried diarrhea causes one to lose so much fluid. Slight headache probably need to intake more liquid, and I have been doing so, but seems anytime I eat, I have to rush to the bathroom. I had started calcium supplements, except I wondered if we all should be adjusting our diet to ensure the Actonel works, so I checked a blog on what diet should be maintained with Actonel. I have been taking calcium in the form of Tums and also Viactiv which provides both calcium and Vitamin D which is needed to absorb the calcium. Just now, I had some Oatmeal (really good product from Costco) and have been fine for 5 min F 52 5 days

1   I took ACTONEL on a Sunday and within 2 hours of taking felt like I had the flu. Had to laydown, very restless sleep, Couldn't stand or sit, Fever, Chills, Neck and Shoulder Pain. Next day, went to work still feeling like I had the flu, came home early evening shivering and shaking. This occurred every day for the entire week! By the following Saturday, felt OK again. I have an existing fracture in my back and osteopenia ~ doctor suggested ACTONEL due to existing fracture and possibility of future fractures. I will not take this medicine again! F 59 1 days

1  Border line Osteoporosis The first month, 9/10, no problems. The second month,10/1 I had severe reaction that night. I felt like I had been kicked in the ribs. I had a hard time getting up from my chair, walking upright, turning over in bed, anything that required the use of my muscles around my ribs. The next day I felt fluish and still very sore. I couldn't sleep because I hurt too much. Suday I was some better. Monday I didn't hurt that much, but felt foggy. Today, Tuesday, I feel ok, except for occasional, sharp stabs of pain in my lower back. I racked my brain to figure out what had made me so sore. None of my workouts were new. Actonel was the only variable. My pharmacist agreed. My doctor never mentioned side affects. On Monday I sent him a detailed fax about my symptoms. I will not take the monthly dose again. Two years ago he gave me the choice of taking calcium or prescription meds. I chose calcium. This year he said I needed to take the prescription meds and gave me two samples of the Actonel. Out side of allergy meds I've never taken any medications. This stuff is awful. I reported it to the FDA F 60 2 months

1  osteoporosis About 14 hours after taking Actonel for the first time I woke up with very bad stomach pains which are still occuring. The next day I had flu like symptoms, back ache, stomach ache, headache, heartburn and have felt like that since. I'm wondering how long the symptoms are going to last. I have also taken Boniva, Miacalcin, Forteo and did not have any side effects. I had severe heartburn to Fosamax but not as severe heartburn to the weekly Actonel. I told my doctor I didn't want to take Actonel but he assured me that the monthly Actonel was different and that's the one that would best suit my osteoporosis. It's different alright. F 61 1 times

1  Osteoporosis Yesterday morning I took my first Actonel pill prescribed by my dr for osteoporosis and 12 hrs later I was stricken with major pain.  I took heavy-duty pain med thinking it was because we were out last nite and I sat on the ground watching Bandalu at the Orange County Performing Arts.  Thought I had a fibromyalgia flare.  I woke this am to crushing chest pain, muscle pain all over.  Allan took me to urgent care.   They thought I was having a heart attack.  Spent all am there taking tests...good news not infarct. Bad news. Severe reaction to the drug.      Spent the afternoon sleeping after 500mg vicodin, just got up and pain still severe.  I've had many surgeries and this beats incision and trauma pain.  I have now found out that one out of four women who use this drug experience pain, albeit usually not as crazy as mine (fibromyalgia greatly intensifies any condition, as my  MD pointed out to me this am).  1  alleged osteoperosis I followed directions exactly, did not recline after taking and I had the worst drug reaction of my life. In fact I am still having reactions 4 months after taking one pill. I cannot let myself get the least bit hungry and I cannot have any dairy at all. My stomache growls constantly. thank goodness the dr in emergency told me to stay away from dairy. I accidently ate yogurt the other day and spent 2 days writhing in agony. This drug should be pulled from the market. Did I see there is now a class action suit against the makers of this drug? And righly so. They have caused harm to innocent people and I believe drs are being brainwashed($$$$) into prescribing Actonel. F 50 1 days

1  Osteoporosis The first day I took the Actonel, my bones hurt so much I could barely stand it. I felt like I had a really bad flu bug. I now have acid reflux so bad I don't know what to do. I was on Actonel for 6 months. I thankfully got off this product and think it should be taken off the market so others don't have to suffer. F 82 6 months
