SINGULAIR  (MONTELUKAST SODIUM):  Montelukast is used regularly to prevent the wheezing and shortness of breath caused by asthma and decrease the number of asthma attacks. Montelukast is also used before exercise to prevent breathing problems during exercise (bronchospasm). This medication can help decrease the number of times you need to use your rescue inhaler. This medication is also used to relieve symptoms of hay fever and allergic rhinitis (such as sneezing, stuffy/runny/itchy nose). This medication does not work right away and should not be used to treat sudden asthma attacks or other breathing problems. This drug works by blocking certain natural substances (leukotrienes) that may cause or worsen asthma and allergies. It helps make breathing easier by reducing swelling (inflammation) in the airways.   FDA Approval Date: 1998-02-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

I stopped taking the meducation after 3 doses. It took two days to clear up. I am feeling better but still have slight sniffles on the third day. (today).. Please think twice prior to taking this medication. I will never take it again. I wish I could get my money back. F 66 3 days

1  To help control my asthma Fatigue, & mental effects such as irritability, increased anxiety, mood swings, loss of interest, & feelings of hopelessness I began taking this med at the end of June 2020 because I had been battling my asthma all year. At first I had no adverse reaction to the medication. The symptoms didn't present themselves right away in an obvious manner...they slowly came on. I became so irritable & had zero patience with my children. I had big mood swings, increased anxiety, i developed a loss of interest in things, felt fatigued all the time & I began to have feelings of hopelessness. It is not a constant thing, it would come & go to where I would feel crazy at times. About 2 weeks ago I began to notice these symptoms getting worse especially the hopelessness feeling, as if I were spiraling downward. After a huge meltdown, I asked God to help me & this medicine popped in my head. I decided to google the symptoms however I didn't want a generic list of symptoms, i wanted peoples experiences & i eventually found this site. As I read the posts on here about this med, I immediately recognized that it was this medicine that was doing this to me! I cannot believe something like this is on the market & for children even! It is an extremely dangerous drug in my experience because some list suicidal thoughts as one of their symptoms & even though it didn't get to that point for me, after experiencing the slow onset of my symptoms I can see how this drug could possibly slowly lead someone to suicide! Thats nuts! I dont know what might have happened to me had I continued to use this drug! F 35 3 months

1  Montelukast generic brand for allergies My son has been taking this drug since he was 4 years old . He stopped taking it by 11 years old. This drug gave him nitemares , depresssion ,suicidal thoughts ,headaches, and anxiety. He doesnt want to be around people or go outside. My son likes to stay inside play his videogames and text in the phone with family. He is getting better at socializing especially with family now. He has anger issues too. I wish the nitemares would end for him. This drug has caused my son nitemares since he was 4 years old but I really didnt pay attention to it. He stated he had them at early age. Please review this drug .. Its not a great med for children. Parents be cautious with this med. M 13 7 years

1  Eosinophilic esophagitis Shortness of breath and depression. I stopped taking it nearly two weeks ago and have experienced mouth sores and burning lips. I've applied everything from chapstick to Vaseline to coconut oil and the pain only stops when they're slathered in one of the above so I've been applying these things every 5 to 10 minutes to stop the pain. I wonder if anyone else has experienced something similar. It did help with my asthma but was not worth the side effects. F 60 2 months

1  Allergic Asthma My 7/8 year old daughter took this and experienced severe night terrors, anxiety, fear of death, INSANE aggressive behavior, kicking, hitting, etc., After discontinuing the medication she returned back to her normal, kind self although she still has some residual fear/night terrors. It isn't as effective for asthma as some physicians claim. Our pulmonologist suggested that a daily inhaler with occasional albuterol and maybe a daily anti-histamine is more effective at controlling the asthma. An allergist suggested the Singulair - the pulmonologist basically said it wasn't even needed. And he was right. She's gotten better in her behavior and asthma since stopping it. F 8 1 years

1  Allergies Severe paranoia, delusions, frightening experiences , believed a dead body was buried in the backyard , believed people are listening to telephone conversations. Changed telephone number 3 times. Believed some body was injecting me with poisons at night. Believed neighbors are coming in to the house through the attic . Believed relatives are against me. Called 911 multiple times . Had all locks in the house on a holiday by paying extra to locksmith for emergency lock change 1400.00 dollars. Symptoms continued after stopping the drug. This could be a very harmful drug for some people. Unless you are already on it with no problems no one should start new on this drug as who will get side effects cannot be predicted. F 70 4 days

1  Asthma First time taking these, straight away my teeth hurt. I had mood swings and my sex drive died almost over night. They do help asthma there is no denying that but the trade off is awful. Hair loss, depression anxiety all of which I have never really suffered from. Being very in tune with my hormones I could sense I was not myself almost instantly. Symptoms did appear to subside. I missed a week or so and my asthma began to worsen again. Once I started again my mind went out the window and rage almost entirely consumed me, not to mention coming out in a severe rash in the space of a couple of days. Would not recommend would rather suffer asthma. M 29 4 months

1  8 months Singulair 10 mg tablet is scary, the drug was helping my breathing while I was continuing using it but I wasn’t ok at all which I did not notice about the reason of side effects, and I just figured out that around 15 days since last dosage after 8 months of using 10 mg, I had hard breathing, headache, Feeling nausea, insomnia, sleepless, little shaking left hand, diarrhea , and a rapid of fast heartbeat but the big problem was my the mental issue, so mood changed negatively and has depression and anxiety. However, after the hard time visiting many doctors to find the problems, I found that after reading people experiences over multiple websites it’s the singulair plus it returned me back to past around 5-6 months ago when I was stopped taking singulair for one week, I remembered I been to emergency had headache, insomnia, chest problem till I took it again once a day before sleeping which made me not ok. I am not Recovered a 100% and still having hard times but for sure I will be ok very soon. Not recommended at all it’s not worth it plus asking qualified dr is important. Stopping and using can cause series side effects. I’m better but I believe withdrawal will take time since I am daily improved from the day I quit turkey. M 30 1 days

1  asthma and sinus problems chronic anxiety, shakes/tremors, rapid heartbeat, sore throat, flu like symptoms {even though no temperature}, headaches, tiredness, sinus pain seems worse. DO NOT TAKE THIS DRUG, ITS VENOMOUS AND DANGEROUS. I started taking montelukast 3 days ago for loss control of asthma and its been the worst 3 days of my life. they didn't warn me about the side effects for people with current mental health issues and anxiety as I am a bit sufferer and it's made it 10 times worse. I am shaking all the time and feel a sense of doom and I'm on edge all the time and can't think straight. it's not really made a lot of differance with my breathing and still have a blocked nose with quite tender sinusis. I also have aches and pains like I have the flu, and a sore throat to go with it although my temperature is normal, absolutely will not continue with this drug and will just stick to my preventer and my ventolin from my on.. it's scary how it effects people's mental health and should come with a warning and a doctors should warn about this serious side effects. luckily I haven't had the suicidal thoughts yet but it's a awful drug and I do not recommend it at all. I'd rather be on a more powerful preventer and cling onto my ventolin the feel like this. F 28 3 days

1  Asthma Loss of bladder control, shaking, tremors, extreme eczema flare, hives I have mild eczema on my arms and legs and it flared over my entire body and became extremely painful hives. Creams, ointments only slightly work to ease the pain. The shaking started almost from the first day and progressed to muscle jerking. I have never had any issues with bladder control and there are times I feel like I will not make it to the bathroom. I have stopped taking it and hope all this stops soon. F 20 30 days

1  Asthma Severe Headache I took this med years ago and never had such a headache like I had when I took it for 1 night. Ice and tylenol would't help. I had a severe headache for 8 hrs. When I took it years ago I had to stop it after a month because of severe nausea, no headache. F 45 1 days

1  Allergic Rhinitis Night terrors, reoccurring ear infections, suicidal thoughts, brain fog, loss of concentration, hair loss, insomnia, swelling, weight gain, anxiety, thoughts of death, ocd, teeth grinding at night. Had been suffering with allergies and doctor recommended montelukast. Was unable to get off the couch the first two days. Depression, horrible, terrifying dreams. Then I became convinced someone was coming in my apartment. Would wake up at night feeling like someone was in the room with me. Went back to the doctor and she assured me it had NOTHING to do with this medicine. Referred me to a therapist. Slept 10 hours a night and would come home every night and nap for hours. Constant brain fog. Forgetful to the point I could not remember my own birthday, my age, my boyfriends last name. Then became anxious about leaving the house. Started having food delivered. Would go to work and then have to rush home, wouldn't leave on weekends. Started online shopping for things I didn't even want. Then suicidal thoughts started out of nowhere. Would be in the middle of a conversation and a thought would pop up, " You should kill yourself! Throw yourself off the building at work." Terrifying! Thought about going to a mental hospital. I couldn't feel much. It was like I was cut off from my emotions. Couldn't feel happiness or joy, couldn't even cry when I was at my worst. Then my hair started falling out and when I looked it up I found this site. Thank God!!! Off two weeks and I''m not totally back to me but I see a light-except for the hair, that's still falling out.  1  Asthma It worked for my breathing and it was such a relief I thought it was the magic pill. Then the fatigue kicked in, then the constant dreaming and waking up feeling like I never slept. Then I became severely depressed. I felt suicidal and anxious, I still call my husband crying at work. I’ve been off of it for almost a week and it is awful. I want to feel better but the symptoms ebb and flow and come out of nowhere. It starts with a headache and then bam, I’m feeling like I’m going crazy and don’t see a point in life anymore. Unless your life depends on this drug DO NOT TAKE IT! And for the love of anything DO NOT GIVE THIS TO CHILDREN! I am wondering if I will ever be the same again. One of the worst experiences of my life. 42 2 weeks
