3  Overactive sinuses I have not taken Allegra in years because, after taking it daily for 8+ years, it was starting to make my congestion worse. I recently moved and my allergies have been acting up big time so I bought some Allegra hoping my 5+ year hiatus had reset things. All of a sudden I am having issues with water retention, anxiety attacks (physical response) when I do not feel anxious, tightness of chest and trouble breathing, trouble falling asleep, not feeling rested when I wake up, etc. I came in search of any connection between Allegra and water retention, but have discovered that what other people are saying is exactly what I am going through. This is some piece of mind though (I was worried because of how out of the blue these were) and explains why it has been coming and going (because I have not been taking Allegra everyday).  1  Allergies Extreme back pain, stomach cramps, diarrhea, lump in throat, feeling tired, difficulty swallowing and heartburn. My GP highly recommended Allegra for my allergies. I was told to opt for the name brand because the generic doesn't work as well. After taking it, around two hours later my stomach started to bubble and feel crappy. Thought I had eaten something bad. This was followed by extreme heartburn along with a fast heart rate. It's been 24 hours since I've taken it and I'm still feeling the side effect of the stomach pain and back pain. I will visit this site before I take any otc medication in the future. F 39 1 days

2  Allergies Headache, stomach problems, muscle aches, teeth grinding at night I knew that I'd had side effects last year when I tried it but I couldn't remember what they were and my seasonal allergies get so bad this time of year so I was desperate. Now I remember. I grind my teeth really bad at night on this drug. Plus I've had a non stop headache, muscle aches, and now stomach problems. I need to write this down where I'll see it next year. I felt better with the allergies. F 64 2 days

1  Allergies Dry mouth, uneasy feeling, brain fog, unaware of surroundings, depressed, fast heart rate, high blood pressure, tremors, numbness, etc. I usually will take a Claritin as needed and usually does the job. My doctor told me he takes Allegra once a day and recommended it to me. The next day I took one and after 30 minutes I could breath better. 4 hours later I was in the ER! This has got to be the worse thing you can take. I was walking around shopping and I felt very odd. Couldn’t think straight. Heart was racing. My hands were shaking and tingling. The reason I went to the ER is because as I was walking out to my car I could not gain the strength to keep them moving! I leaned on a shopping cart to help me get to my car and drove straight to the ER. My legs were numb and my hands were cramping. Ive never experienced something like this in my entire life and have many health issues. The only thing I did different that day was take Allegra. If not for this thread I would’ve never put two and two together. This is pure poison. M 29 1 days

1  Chronic urticaria Heart palpitations, huge increase in ectopic beats, breathless feeling It took me a long time to realise that this medication was the reason for massively increased palpitations and ectopic beats, as it took a couple of weeks for it to get really bad after starting 180mg twice a day. I was told by a senior consultant in dermatology that this was impossible to be the cause so I never thought about stopping and instead had numerous tests on my heart. What do you know, after a year I stopped in desperation as I really felt this could be the cause, TWO DAYS after stopping this and going back to cetrizine my heart problems have stopped completely. Awful medication. I have ectopic beats but very rarely and to go from several a day to hundreds was scary for me, this med clearly messed up the sync of my heart. I havent had any ectopics or even palpitations since stopping this two weeks ago so Im 100% sure it was the cause. F 36 12 months

1  Raw sinuses, ears Sensation in different parts of my legs at times felt weirdly- on, then off, then on,...- just incomplete sensation that would suddenly vary. A couple days when taking Allegra I noticed some actual tingling in all appendages. Also was dazed & drowsy. Only took 1/2 dose Allegra for many of the days during the couple weeks I tried it. Correlation: Noticed weird sensations that stopped when not taking it. Did not help sinuses much either, but was only taking half dose. F 61 14 days

1  Rhinitis Flu-like symptoms. Gut cramps, diarrhea, extreme fatigue, muscle/back aches, weird tingling in extremities, headache. I had no clue it could be the Allegra, which I had started in February to address allergy symptoms. So glad I made the connection, because I felt AWFUL. Now that I see some of my complaints are even listed under "common side effects", I stopped taking a few days ago and today I feel markedly better. They should definitely remove this from the market, or make prescription so that a doctor has to inform you of the myriad awful things that might happen if you take it! F 46 25 days

2  Hives, general seasonal allergies Worsening and changing allergy symptoms. Low blood pressure, sudden acute feelings of doom. These might not be side effects per se but caused by allegra blocking the receptors histamine was intended to bind to. The histamine has to do something else so it binds to other receptors that case more unusual symptoms. Allegra (Not allegra d) does control basic allergy symptoms but causes wierder histamine symptoms to manifest in me at least. After taking it for about a week my throat started to swell, a problem I never had before. Then a few weeks in I started to get dangerously low blood pressure and sudden acute feelings of doom, both of which are histamine related problems I have never had before. I have stopped talking it and these problems went away but my basic allergy symptoms came back. I am wondering if it blocks the histamine from causing the basic allergy symptoms so instead histamine causes the weirder ones. This might be the cause of the anxiety people are talking about. Use it with caution. I'm not an expert but to all the naysayers please don't tell me how I feel. I expected it to work and these side effects hit me out of the blue. M 35 2 months

3  Severe allergies I was taking 180mg along with Nasacort (prescribed by my doctor). I did fine at first but after a couple of weeks I developed severe fatigue. I cut out the Nasacort first with some improvement in the fatigue. I continue the Allegra for another few months, sometimes taking an additional 60 mg. The fatigue continued and in a couple of cases, I literally thought I was going to die. I got on this forum and noticed several people were having problems with fatigue. I cut out Allegra all together after three months of fatigue and noticed a return of energy. I now only take 60 mg at night and have had good results. Bottom line is that too much of a non-drowsy drug can produce unwanted side effects. M 64 0 days
