ZYPREXA  (OLANZAPINE):  Olanzapine is used to treat certain mental/mood conditions (such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder). It may also be used in combination with other medication to treat depression. This medication can help to decrease hallucinations and help you to think more clearly and positively about yourself, feel less agitated, and take a more active part in everyday life. Olanzapine belongs to a class of drugs called atypical antipsychotics. It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances in the brain. Talk to the doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment (especially when used by teenagers). See also Precautions section.   FDA Approval Date: 1997-09-09 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Bipolar II Fatigue, lack of energy, diminished libido. This medication has been a real life saver for me. At 5mg/day it kills suicidal thoughts, helps with depression, helps with insomnia and works well for anxiety. I think this med is worth it despite its side effects. 6 months

5  Depression No side effects of note, perhaps because I am taking so low a dose This drug has wiped out my suicidal thinking for which I have suffered with for over a year and a half. It has been the most effective drug I have ever taken. I am also on elavil and tegretol. I have tried everything out there. Everything. Don't listen to others. Please try it, perhaps at a low dose if you are feeling suicidal. It may help you. There is hope! . F 11 days

4  olansapine Gained roughly 20 pounds , I rarely experience muscle cramps. At the start my legs twitched. This site has been a very reassuring to me ,to see how many people have gained weight. My doctor told me that my weight gain was from overeating but I eat normally and still gain weight. I have never gained weight in my life and after a couple of months on the drug I gained 20 pounds. I exercise regularly and still gain weight. I'm coming off in 6 months so hopefully then my body will balance itself out. M 1.5 years

2  steroid-induced psychosis the medicine is very good for bipolar mania, schizophrenia, or (in my case) steroid-induced psychosis (rare side effect from pulmicort inhaler, see for further info on that). However, weight gain is rapid, and you can't do much about it. You can be eating a steak dinner and thinking about fried chicken at the same time. I got terrible anxiety with it, I was barely able to go out at all. A few months after stopping the drug, I started to develop facial twitches, and muscle twitches, and jerking of the fingers, arms, etc. Apparently this is the beginning of tardive dyskinesia, and the the drug masks the symptoms, so you will not notice it until you stop the drug. Thanks goodness I stopped in time. Having permanent twitching/jerking of my body would not be fun. However, if you have serious mental illness, you may have to risk this serious side effect.  2   I'm going crazy Coming off of this medicine going on one month on June 12th. It's been hell of a ride to say the least!! Had I known what I know now I would have never touched more than 2.5 mg. First ten days off I was ok. After that not getting rest, I'm barely sleeping it reminds me when I become manic, I'm taking another medication to control my symptoms.how long can one possibly go without having Full adequate sleep a night? Without causing health problems, Such as stroke, heart problems? Variables to consider... Taking melatonin sometimes it knocks me out other times I just lay there exhausted, but cannot go to sleep! Anyone have solutions, or going through this please contact me 0 days

1  bipolar II extreme drowsiness, feeling like a zombie This drug was by far the worst out of all the meds I have tried!!! I was on only 2.5 mg (in addition to 100 mg Topamax and 75 mg Effexor XR). My doctor told me that it would help augment the Effexor XR and in turn help with my anxiety. I was reluctant to take it because I read all over the place that it caused major, major weight gain but then I figured since I was on the other two meds (which suppress appetite) that I should be okay. Well, it didn't make me gain weight! Thank goodness! My intuition was right about that! Anywho, moving on....I had to sleep 10-12 hours each night and [if time allowed] take a two hour nap in the afternoon. That would be fine every now and then, but NOT on a DAILY basis! The zombie-effect was totally horrid! I was indifferent towards nearly everything! My creativity and intellect was dulled; it was extremely difficult to think =( I had almost no personality. This boomeranged of course. When I thought about what I was turning into, I became frighten F 3 months

1  bipolar: Lithium fine My son died from this drug; died of profound hyperglycemia. No warning from the doctor or a warning guide. This is a lethal drug. In the CATIE Study, it was the worst. As far back as 2001 a Medwatch study found 200 plus cases of diabetes and 23 deaths. In 2002 UK and Japan required Lilly to place a warning. The FDA did nothing. Lilly execs need prison time for what I view as murder. F 20 days

1  Manic depression My son took it for two years (after having successfully taken lithium for years) then fell into a coma and died of profound hyperglycemia. He was 39 years old. I would not recommend this poison to anyone and think it should be taken off the market. Eli Lilly knew this drug was poison. Other countries had required them to put a warning on the label but not our country. They should go to jail in handcuffs. F 2 years
