4  basilar migraine Some sleepiness and fatigue, but that could also be from having chronic migraine itself. Alleviated the drunken aspects of basilar migraine that I just couldn’t shake- the slurring, falling, dizziness, confusion. It did not clear it up entirely so it’s not a magical pill. Also I take five other preventives. But Lamictal is a significant player for me in the war on migraine. F 41 2 years

2  Mood Swings Nausea, Increased depression, loss of short-term memory, mental fog, loss of appetite, clinching jaw, felt "dumbed down", crying jags, irritability, INCREASED ANXIETY! Started taking 12.5 mg as I am sensitive to all medications. Lifted depression in 24 hrs. (no exaggeration) but caused anxiety. Tried going up to 25mg and felt extreme irritability, off the chart anxiety, mild lower neck pain, sore throat, stuffy nose. Went back down to 12.5 and I still had bad short-term memory loss, then I started feeling really down, isolating and a little paranoid. I didn't want to leave home. Made depression worse. I just felt out of it. I wish it would have worked for me, but as I said I am highly sensitive to all medications. I hope this posts can help someone. F 55 2 months

5  Bipolar 1 Long-term memory loss. Basically I have not experienced side effects, and I've been on it for nearly 20 years. Literally makes me, me. I have also been on what seems like everything else over my life time. i've been playing this drug game since the early 90s. I have to take meds for my anxiety and insomnia. What works for one person is so different than another. Anytime I have tried something with a terrible side effect, I don't take it. Debilitating side effects are not an acceptable option in my opinion. F 42 18 years

3  Epilepsy HAIR LOSS! fatigue, trouble staying asleep at night, balance issues (although this could also be a continuing result of encephalitis) and indigestion. Seems to be controlling my seizures, together with the other medication. Only had one seizure since taking it and that was during the delicate phase of eliminating one med and introducing this. I am concerned about the considerable hairloss and fatigue, though. F 30 4 weeks

3  Epilepsy When I first Started taking this medication I became very Moody. I expressed to my doctor I thought that it was from medication but was told it was probably depression from my recent diagnosis of epilepsy. I was put on antidepressants but because this anti-depressant can cause seizures they increased my lamictal. I have headaches, very blurry vision, extreme irritability and rage, stomach pain and memory loss. Can't find words or mix up what I'm saying. Very confused. Itchy. After starting increase 1 month ago, I've been crying, yelling at my boyfriend over nothing, social phobic, and can't retain information. Made the connection finally. I reviewed by medical records and found that I had been telling my doctor for almost a year-and a half that I believed it was this medication. They convinced me it was side effects from the seizures but I know better. My Dr agreed it makes sense with the increased dosage and increased symptoms i need to stop this med. Did help with seizure control F 46 15 months

5  Bipolar Headaches for about a month when first started, then none. This drug has been a lifesaver for me. I had a hypomanic episode that lasted for months followed by a period of deep, deep depression. I didn't see a doctor during that time, when I finally did she put me on maniacal (generic). No real weight gain, I've had two small hypomanic episodes lasting only days and it helped and those were in five years. Like I said, no side effects but you have to watch for a rash. The change wasn't INSTANT but nothing is, I saw results after a month and we titrated slowly. It also has some antidepressant qualities. It is not for treatment of current manic states, you have to take other stuff for that but it won't leave you feeling drugged. F 37 5 years

4  depression, mood swings none noticeable EXCEPT I gained 10 lbs-on a 5'1 frame for total of 138lbs. Other tragic life factors during that time; hard to believe 25 mgs could cause weight gain, but when I stopped taking it the bloating and abdominal discomfort lessened considerably, and the weight gain seems to have paused. Been off it for almost 3 weeks and pants no longer fail to zip after 1 or 2 weeks of not wearing them.... F 62 4 months

3  Bipolar II Depression Briefly describe the latest side effects you experienced. Last entry: I took one generic (Mylan, not great - bloating and weight gain, lost voice). Brand name Lamictal (Very good, but short time, due to bloating and hair loss) Now another generic: Apotex Lamotrigine (Canadian generic). As good or near as good as lamictal. No weight gain (I think lactose in the others made bloating worse). But lots of hair loss. Tremors, shaking, vision issues - blurry, and worsened astigmatism in my left eye. Dropping objects. Vertigo initially a few times a week. Insomnia at night, and sleeping in the day (but that could be "me" as well). Also on GSK Lamictal and Apo-lamotrigine initially I had rapid WEIGHT LOSS*. I am SKINNY and I am fit... but I lost like 7lb in a week, probably just adjusting. I lost a lot of weight as a teenager (I was obese) but have since been pretty fit. Despite weight loss, my stomach is bloated with fluid retention and that's from lamotrigine. People tell me lots Additional Comments about LAMICTAL : Last entry: I have ADHD (severe) and BPII supposedly. I've been depressed lots of times from 16 years old to 30 (now). This is the only medication that really helped. I do feel more like myself now... but I don't want to lose my hair. I'm a guy, but I had long thick, nice hair up until I got on stimulants and now it's worse even on lamotrigine. Shedding crazy amounts. So much so, that I started on Finasteride. I have no recession, and I have diffuse hair loss. It's Adderall (short time only), this and Dexedrine. My hair loss started with diffuse thinning on Adderall, I quit it days later. Then I used Dexedrine and Spironolactone Cream for 2.5 years. And then it worsened again (was paused) on lamotrigine. I like being "stable", not depressed... but losing hair will make me really really depressed, so I don't know what to do. M 30 17 days

Patient History
1  Mood stabilization 11 days into taking Lamictal I had noticed a rash on the top of both of my thighs. It didn't itch or anything so I didn't think much of it. Cut to later that evening after noticing the rash on my thighs I came home experiencing severe chills despite gorgeous spring weather, not a half an hour later I had a fever of a 101.8. My body started hurting in ways that I didn't know were possible. Very flu-like without any of the other flu-like symptoms. Rheumatoid like pain. I had no runny nose, no sore throat, no congestion. The next day the rash had spread up into my arms, chest, and face. The pain that I was feeling in my body left me completely unable to sleep and my fever had spiked to 102.6 at which poiny I started to have a nose bleed. I haven't had a nose bleed since childhood. I went to my primary care physician and she told me to stop taking the Lamictal immediately. The subscribing psychiatrist of the medication didn't return my call for three days and told me to stop taking the medication and to start taking Benadryl. I went to my dermatologist the day after my primary care and she said this rash is very common and luckily it was not the Steven Johnson syndrome and prescribed prednisone taper. Still felt the intense pain and yet another full night of No Sleep. It got to the point where I had to go to the emergency room, where they had to give me a morphine and Benadryl drip. That was the only thing that relieved the pain. I am now going on four days not being able to work F 34 2 days
