ALEVE  (NAPROXEN SODIUM):  Naproxen is used to relieve pain from various conditions. It also reduces pain, swelling, and joint stiffness caused by arthritis, bursitis, and gout attacks. This medication is known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by blocking your body's production of certain natural substances that cause inflammation. If you are treating a chronic condition such as arthritis, ask your doctor about non-drug treatments and/or using other medications to treat your pain. See also Warning section. Some brands of sustained-release naproxen take longer to be absorbed and are not recommended for pain that needs quick relief (such as during a gout attack). Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about your particular brand.   FDA Approval Date: 1994-01-11 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Knee injury inflammation I developed a horrible facial rash from taking this medication. My cheeks, forehead and chin turned bright red with a rash resembling tiny hives. The hives oozed, itched, caked over, and the skin started flaking off. It itched, burned, and tingled, and absolutely nothing I tried relieved the symptoms. Then my face swelled, and my skin started cracking. Fortunately, at this point I read an article in a medical column about a reader who had developed a rash after taking Aleve. I immediately stopped taking it, and my symptoms are slowly subsiding, but it's been over a week now, and my symptoms returned after being in the sun, even with sunscreen protection. This drug is bad news, and I don't think the medical community is sufficiently aware of the wide range and frequency of the problems associated with it. F 65 30 days

1  prescribed for jaw inflammation I took one pill at dinnertime. I got unusually sleepy in the evening, and even started to feel some weakness. Went to bed and got to sleep no problem, but awoke with my heart racing about 1.5 hours later. Felt like a panic attack and actually caused one due to the racing heart rate. I also felt unusually warm and had to blot my face with a cold cloth...had to take Xanax to calm down to go back to sleep. I feel very fortunate to ONLY have had these symptoms from Aleve (Naproxen) after having read the symptoms of NEAR DEATH that some have reported on this site. I will never take Aleve again, and I would not recommend it to anyone. I have taken OTC ibuprophen for years with no problems, so I called my pharmacist to ask what dose of ibuprophen would be equivilent. He told me 2-3 200mg tablets every 6-8 hours. I will stick with what I know I can tolerate and stay away from Aleve (Naproxen). With all of these horrible side effects, this med should be taken off of the market! F 46 1 days

1  to reduce inflammation in my foot Facial swelling around my eyes and nose and a swollen bottom lip. I started taking Aleve at the recommendation of my doctor who said it could help the inflammation of my foot which randomly became swollen (must have pulled something b/c the pain gradually decreased but the swelling was still there.) She said to take 2 doses of 2 a day but this seemed high to me so I rarely did, up until this week when I was tired of looking at my swollen foot and also had a bit of a headache. I began to have a little rash and a swollen lip which I attributed to being out in the sun since I was on vacation. Maybe it was a mix of both but that night and the next am, I had facial swelling around my eyes, nose and bottom lip. I went to the ER and am taking hormoes and Zyrtec to hopefully get rid of it. So strange! I never had this reaction to Aleve before, but I also never took so much of it (though it was prescribed to me by my Dr.) Never again. I had to miss work today because it's just so uncomfortable, even to look at! F 27 3 days

1  car accident , inflammation I took just one aleve at bedtime, woke up at around 3 am hot and uncomfortable (strange feeling, similar to what people describe as a panic attack). The next day, my lower lip began swelling, and became irratated. The following day I could see small pin-size blisters forming on my lower lip. It has been three days and I am still suffering. This happened once before around the holidays this last year 07' ( Yes, I had taken aleve (for several days), I had the same symptoms, I am experiencing, now. Unfortunately, I had not put two and two together until this experience. I also went to the doctor ( when this happened around the holidays and he cleared me of any suspension of cold sores, etc...) I believe the I am experiencing an allergic reaction to Aleve. I will not use Aleve, again. F 30 1 days

1  Prevention of inflammation After 7 days of taking Aleve (2 x per day) I had sudden, painless, massive GI bleeding; was rushed to the emergency room, passed out, more blood, code blue. I required 4 units of blood transfusion. Fortunately I survived this near-death experience, but it has left some big emotional scars. I have diverticulosis, and the doctors all said the Aleve caused the massive bleeding. This is probably an ultra-sensitivity to Aleve (or possibly all NSAIDs) and such a dramatic side-effect is rare -- but well documented in the medical literature (as I have found out since). NEVER take Aleve or any other NSAIDs (or aspirin) if you have diverticulosos or have ever experienced any GI bleeding, whether upper or lower. F 62 7 days

1  Wrist injury/inflammation Had allergic reaction that included itching, severe nasal congestion, swelling to the throat which caused difficulty breathing, swelling to the face, face and neck turned red, and my ears felt plugged. I took Benadryl to treat the reaction, which helped but the symptoms didn't fully subside until about two hours later. M 29 1 times
