CONTRAVE  (BUPROPION HYDROCHLORIDE; NALTREXONE HYDROCHLORIDE):  This medication is used with a doctor-approved exercise, behavior change, and reduced-calorie diet program to help you lose weight. It is used by certain overweight people, such as those who are obese or have weight-related medical problems. Losing weight and keeping it off can lessen the many health risks that come with obesity, including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and a shorter life. Naltrexone belongs to a class of drugs known as opiate antagonists, and bupropion is an antidepressant that may help restore the balance of certain natural chemicals (neurotransmitters) in your brain. These two medications work together on separate parts of the brain to reduce appetite and how much you eat. Most opiates should not be used for 7 to 10 days before starting naltrexone, but some opiate drugs (such as methadone) should not be used for 10 to 14 days before starting naltrexone. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details. Other forms of naltrexone or bupropion are used to treat a variety of conditions including depression, other mental/mood disorders, smoking cessation, addiction to narcotic medication, and alcohol abuse. This combination product is not approved for these other uses. Discuss the risks and benefits of this medication, as well as other ways to lose weight, with your doctor.   FDA Approval Date: 2014-09-10 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  weight loss dry mouth, intense sweating I was on Contrave for 3 months and honestly felt great. I progressed to 2 pills, twice a day. I said to several people, I haven't felt this good in awhile. I lost about 20 months and 11 pounds within the first week. Unfortunately, I had to stop at 3 months due to finding out that I had elevated liver enzymes, I had blood work done for an autoimmune disease and that doctor indicated the elevated levels. While taking Contrave, I never had blood work, which I find odd considering what I know now. I found out that less than 2% have elevated liver enzymes as a side effect to Contrave. I stopped taking it and my liver enzymes went back to normal. However, I have found it difficult to find another medication that my insurance will approve now. Also, my doctor dismissed the fact that I was concerned about the liver enzymes. I had intense sweating while taking Contrave and it got progressively worse ( not just because it was summer). When I brought it up to the doctor, I was told it was not a side effect to the medication (it is in fact a side effect). I did not have any major side effects, thus why I felt the medication was successful. My advice is to do your research, get multiple opinions, ask about the rare side effects.I hope this helps someone. F 37 3 months

4  Lose weight In beginning, mild headaches, pressure in head, slightly dizzy. Now minimal to no side effects. Just started 4th week and 4 tabs daily. So far no side effects. Lost 10 lbs. eating much less, get full quickly. Don't have evening cravings watching tv. Use to drink alcohol and completely stopped. Want to eat heathy or my stomach will cramp. Take fibers pills, so no constipation. Have to take more BP medicine due to BP rising slightly but not enough to be considered hypertension. M 50 4 weeks

5  Obesity I'Ēm almost morbidly obese. I eat a lot due to stress and biredom, have uncontrolled cravings and was also getting quite depressed (due to reasons other then weight). I had trouble sleeping, had a lot of anxiety over many things even less significant ones and also had feet pain due to excessive weight that prevented me from staying active. I'Ēve been taking contrave for about a week and felt the difference from day 1. I'Ēm finally at piece!. No disturbing thought or anxiety. Feel like a regilar person. Haven'Ēt had that feeling for I would say at least 15 years but last year was definitely the worst with suicidal thought. All of that is suddenly gone! I now fall asleep right after I go to bed with no problem at all!! Even my feet no longer hurt!!! It'Ēs magic! I haven'Ēt lost any notiacle weight yet, it'Ēs been just a week, but I sure needed a good antidepressant and contrave works magic! I no longer crave food and have no thoughts about food. I can eat healthy food, I feel when I'Ēm fool and can easily stop eating! I also feel when I'Ēm hungry, really hungry not cravings, and it'Ēs a completely different feeling!! I just have this calm thought I my head - I need some food please - not a panic scream and about to loosÐÂĩ consciousness if I don'Ēt get two pounds of noodle F 35

2  Weight loss Started out great! Lost almost 10 lbs in 3 weeks!. When I dialled it up to 4 pills a day, I began experiencing severe headaches, nausea lasting all day, ringing in ears, dizzy, excessive sweating (hot flashes). I could not figure out why I was feeling so sick! I even had to go to Emergency because of migraine like symptoms. Dropped down to one pill twice a day but still experienced low grade nausea for 8 hours after taking a pill. I wasted 2 weeks of holidays lying in bed, eating Pepto Bismol and Tylenol, when I could have been out walking, working out, or preparing healthy meals. I am weaning myself off and will follow up with my doctor. I feel I can have more willpower to choice healthy foods and have motivation to exercise without taking a pill that makes me feel sick and shaky! I really wish I could have been one of those success stories for Contrave! Good luck to all trying to lose weight. This was not a healthy choice for me. F 51 6 weeks

4  weight loss Persistent sore on the right side of tongue & white sores on the lips. It worked really well for me, but after taking Contrave for almost 2 years I had to stop. I could not figure out why I had these sores on my lip & tongue. I finally figured out it must be the Contrave, as they went away after I stopped taking this drug. I decided to try Contrave again 3 months later & within 3 days I started getting a sore on my lip again- so I stopped it for good. F 63 2 years

1  Weight loss Nausea started when I upped to 4 pills. Cannot function. I dialed it down to 3 tabs. Still nausea. Now I'm at 2 tabs. Still nausea. It's pretty miserable. Yesterday, I threw up everything I tried to eat or drink and stepped on the scale at 2 pounds heavier. Frustrated! F 46 40 days

5  Weight Loss I have not experienced any side effects, it has helped my moods a great deal. I have been taking Contrave for 2.5 weeks and I have lost 7lbs! It has increased my energy levels and I feel better emotionally. I noticed a slight headache when I didn't drink enough water one day. I recommend drinking 1/2 of your body weight in water. I also noticed that there were times when I felt hunger, but I was just thirsty, so when I feel that way now, I just grab a sugar-free popsicle. I don't do a lot of exercise because I am walking all day at work in the hospital. I have occasionally walked/jog 1.5 miles on my running pad. Overall I am extremely happy with Contrave and I am excited about the weeks to come. M 48 2 weeks

1  Wanted to loose 30 lbs All I wanted to do was sleep and eat. I get up at 7 am each morning. By 830 am I am falling asleep watching the news. I forced myself to stay awake. I actually lost 3 lbs the first two weeks. Then at a stand still. I tried so hard not to eat but I would give in. I need something to help me not to eat. F 74 30 days

5  Weight loss Only side effect I had was slight brain fog and trouble breathing when I reached 4 pills a day. When I cut back to 3, both side effects went away. I lost 35 lbs in 6 months. I have since continued to take 1 pill a day for maintenance, and only eat when I'm genuinely hungry. Very few days of cravings. I've occasionally had a glass of wine or a drink. For my body, alcohol negates the effects of contrave, and makes me want to eat. So I stopped the occasional glass of wine. Not worth it. Pill has been a godsend for me. F 42 1 years

1  Weightloss 90 Super nauseous with headache similar to car sickness or morning sickness that lasted alll long. Extreme tiredness and grogginess to the point of not being able to function and had to try and sleep it off. No matter how much I slept it was never enough and the sick feeling only got worse after increasing the dosage. This drug absolutely got rid of my appetite, but the side effects were not worth it.
