Couldn't sleep, couldn't think straight. Heart palpataions. Extreme cold. Irrational thoughts. Memory loss. You could visibly see his distress on his face. He felt like he was having a breakdown. Got progressively worse. Need to make stronger warnings about this drug. Toprol was the only medication he was taking. Does not drink, smoke or do drugs. Healthy eater and exerciser. Gained weight and had trouble functioning in life. Thought he was going insane. Effected his job. Started having anxiety attacks. But after that first month I realized that my pulse had finally lowered from about a constant 120+ to somewhere in the steady 60s. After a year the only problematic side effects I have noticed are hair loss (Anyone know if there's a way to fix that? Will it come back if I get off of it?), and now that I am exercising regularly my blood pressure and pulse have dropped even lower. I was told that if I stay on this exercise plan that I will eventually have to be taken off the dosage (25mg 2x daily)! | I know it's scary at first, not understanding why your body is reacting the way it does to the medication, but just stick with it and you'll probably feel much better very soon. I can deal with the side effects. It's a heck of a lot better than having chest pains, not being able to breath, or feel your arms or legs, or having a heart attack. However, over time, my dose was increased from 50mg 1X a day, to 50mg 2X a day. I am a stay at home mother of 2 small children, and let me tell you, I am exhausted. I have a need to nap almost every day. I can't get basic chores completed. Simple tasks that I used to breeze through are extreme challenges these days. I have been on the medicine over a year and I've gained about 20 lbs. The doctor is getting me off of the Toprol, and he's prescribed a calcium channel blocker. Does anyone have any info on these? Good or bad? I've read that a beta-blocker can react with a calcium channel blocker. My cardiologist wants me to take 25 mg of toprol at night, and the calcium channel blocker during the day. | I wish this medicine didn't have the side effects because it really did take care of my heart symptoms. By the way, I have terrible heartburn at night now too. Is this Toprol related? I've been struggling with depression too. | F | 34 | 1.5 years | 12/30/2004 | 3 | Heart Attack in Nov. 2003 | After my heart attack in 2003 (which was caused by a 50mg. Imitrex for migraines), my cardiologist put me on 150mg Toprol XL. Now I am on 100 mg. since they also put me on a channel blocker (verapamil 120mg) along with pravachol 80mg and zetia 10mg. The toprol is a beta blocker and causes tiredness, no libido, some memory loss, weight gain and HAIR LOSS. The hair loss is terrible for men, but try being a woman. Doctor is aware of all these side effects but insists I take the 100 mg. It is slowing my heartrate down to where it should be. He refuses to take me off or even lower the dosage. I also take an 81 mg. adult strength aspirin per day. Had many other reactions to other meds. These seem to be tolerated other than the side effects above. No rashes, no swelling, no heart pain, etc. | Everyone is different and should consult their physician on all side effects. I exercise 4x a week to simply maintain my weight since this drug can pack it on. OH....BEWARE OF IMITREX TOO. i never smoked, normal weight, controlled BP...but still had a heart attack at 55 after a 50 mg.
