CARDURA  (DOXAZOSIN MESYLATE):  Doxazosin is used alone or with other drugs to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. This medication works by relaxing blood vessels so blood can flow more easily. Doxazosin is also used in men to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia-BPH). It does not shrink the prostate, but it works by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and part of the bladder. This helps to relieve symptoms of BPH such as difficulty in beginning the flow of urine, weak stream, and the need to urinate frequently or urgently (including during the middle of the night). Doxazosin belongs to a class of drugs known as alpha blockers.   FDA Approval Date: 1990-11-02 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Hypertension Dizziness, fatigue, generally feeling lethargic. Loss of sensation in finger tips and nausea. Sinus tachycardia hasn't improved. My paediatrician suggested I take Doxazosin for grade 2 hypertension, in the hope that it would alleviate symptoms (double vision, headaches etc). It managed to bring my systolic down, but did not bring my diastolic down. I have been suffering intense fatigue and dizziness and I have found simple tasks rather difficult because of this fatigue. My fingers have also, at times, become numb with mild tingling sensations. I'll also note that I had been diagnosed with sinus tachycardia (prior to antihypertensive treatment) and my heart rate has become more problematic for me since being on Doxazosin. F 16 6 weeks

3  hypertension and BPH Developed retrograde ejaculation. Considering reducing or elimination this drug. Needed a third blood pressure drug, and thought I could kill two birds with one stone. This would also help with urine flow. It did drop my blood pressure enough. Helps somewhat with night time urine flow, and less trips to the bathroom, but very inconsistent night to night--not enough to put up with the ejaculator problem it has caused. Will stop taking if I can find another blood pressure med. M 66 6 months

1  BPH Within about 2 days of starting the drug, my urination frequency dropped to almost zero. Good. But I was so dizzy I had extreme difficulty driving. I stopped taking this after only 2 weeks and have had erection problems for the last 11 days, even with taking Cialis daily. This is a really bad drug. I thought I would try taking this because it was cheap ($20) and my Cialis I was using for BPH was $700 a month. That was a mistake. Now my sex life has ended. M 56 14 days

3  BPH and high blood pressure No problem for about 15 years. Then an additional medication (Sinemet) was added for Parkinson's symptoms. I immediately experienced severe nasal congestion and huge amounts of mucus discharge. These symptoms were so severe they kept me awake most the night. Symptoms included coughing, gagging on mucus, spitting, clearing my throat, and blowing my nose. Sleep problems were prominent for almost a year until I figured out the problem. I eventually learned that the Sinemet enhanced the action of Cardura, including the associated side effects. My GP was convinced it was an allergy. My neurologist insisted it could not be Sinemet. Neither considered the possibility of an interaction. M 72 15 years

5  BPH Initially I experienced occasional dizzy spells until my system stabilized to it. Possibly contributes to dry eyes, but age and other meds are more likely culprits. Started on 2mg and doubled dose each year until now at current 8mg which works well to control urination urges and increase flow M 58 12 years

4  BPH Feeling weak & tired. Disturbed sleep at nite. Somewhat depressed. Dizzy when getting up. Less side effects with lower dose. Better than Flomax on side effects. Maybe, I should go back down to 2 mg a day soon. M 70 1 years

3  high blood pressure much reduced sensation on ejaculation. one event of a lot of blood in urine. when on this drug i did not have to get up in the night to urinate. i stopped taking the drug when i had a lot of blood in the urine - my doctor did not think the drug caused this - it could have been too much exertion during exercise. however I have had no recurrence since stopping the drug.  2  for symptoms of BPH Side effects include shortness of breath, palpitations, dizziness, pre-syncope, fatigue. I continued taking Cardura for several years for relief of urinary symptoms, especially problems urinating at night. The side effects were bad to alarming, but other alpha blockers including Uroxatrol and Flomax were ineffective by comparison to Cardura. I found that between 1 and 2mg nightly were enough to improve urination while keeping the side effects to a barely tolerable level. I finally decided to go with surgery and had a TURP, and will thankfully say goodbye to Cardura. M 70 5 years
