CIPRO  (CIPROFLOXACIN HYDROCHLORIDE):  This medication is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Ciprofloxacin belongs to a class of drugs called quinolone antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for virus infections (such as common cold, flu). Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can cause it to not work for future infections.   FDA Approval Date: 1987-10-22 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  UTI joint pain, muscle pain, neuropathy, auditory hallucinations, brain fog, fatigue, anxiety, joint popping, TMJ pain, low body temperature i'm only 26 and this drug ruined my life. 4 pills into my regime, and i knew something was terribly wrong. i was in the worst pain i've ever experienced in my life. i was bedridden for 5 days and i attempted to go to work. i made it 45 minutes into my shift before breaking down, because the pain in my shoulders, spine, and hips was unbearable. i was healthy before this, and now i feel like i traded my body for an 80 year old body. i feel like i have arthritis, fibromyalgia, all of it. i've healed a little bit, but i still deal with symptoms and "flare ups." i've been from doctor to doctor and they can't specify what's going on, but they all agree it was an adverse reaction to cipro. i was cold intolerant before, but that's worse now. my body temperature is always 96-97 when i go to the doctor. i can't warm up. my body is always in pain. this reaction happened back in july, so it hasn't been long but i wish i would heal already. i want to feel normal again. i have days where i can barely move, it feels like lactic acid is building up in my muscles and my joints feel as though there are huge shards of glass in them. there are days i cry, because i worry i'm going to have to apply for disability. i worry what my body will be in 10, 15, 20 years. i can't exercise, i can't work, i can't socialize. i'm restricted to my house most days. i'm 26 and my life feels like it's already over. some days i struggle just to stand up from the couch, i struggle to lean, i struggle t F 26 10 days

1  Suspected prostatitis 1. Was barely able to walk due to tendon pain around my knees and behind for 2.5 years. 2. Heart palpitations which started 3 weeks after stopped taking cipro for 8 days. 3. Thyroid damage, lasting for 5 years. Took cipro in October 2009. Stopped after 8th tablet due to tendon pain, which started to occur briefly after 4th tablet. So, 2.5 years of my life was practically gone. After 2.5 year mark I could go practically anywhere, but let's say, if I was walking for something like 10k of steps, I had to take it easy on a next day, making less then 1k steps. Now about 95% recovered. I can't run continuously for more then 5 min, just getting tired too fast. No tendon pain, only getting feeling of being unusually tired making something unusual, like running for more then 5 min, carrying heavy weight, like 80lb concrete bags for short distances or carrying 10lb weight for long distances. I took bunch of supplements, including homeopathic cipro, instaflex, vitamin C injections, etc, but I am not sure what really helped me. I believe instaflex. It made inflammation to go away, but it was making it more difficulty to walk, because tendons were becoming kinda short. 1 pill was in effect for something like 2 weeks, so I took it 1 per too week. Thyroid got fixed after typical thyroid supplement, I've bought a Whole Foods brand, it was containing Tyrosine. I am not 100% sure if it all helped, maybe it was just a normal body recovery. The system, seeing such a horrific side effects, should develop some kind of test, detecting the reaction early, like a blood test, etc. So far I call this people's mutilation and CORRUPTION!  1  UTI 100% CRIPPLED Today marks NINE YEARS since I lost my entire life to this drug. It is unfathomable to me that I am still to this day bedridden and in agonizing pain because of a mere twelve FDA-approved antibiotic pills I took--as directed--over the course of six days all the way back in 2009. The person I was before ingesting this poison is now completely dead and gone. Anything and everything I ever had that constituted a life is now merely an extremely distant memory. I lie here in bed day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year, just waiting to clinically die. May every single Bayer employee suffer the same wrath they have forced upon me and so many countless others.  1  Travelers Diarrhea Tinnitus, joint pain, muscle pain, muscle twitching, severe abdominal pain, now gluten intolerant, now lactose intolerant, heart beat irregularity, chest pain, tendonitis (shoulder, hip, primarily Achilles tendon), pain in hands, peripheral neuropathy (hands felt like they were partially asleep for several weeks, feel a wet feeling sometimes in my ankle and foot). One morning my hand was asleep for over 45 min., blurry vision for several weeks, fatigue for several months. Cipro and all of it's cousins (Fluoroquinolons) are all poison. They should be reserved for the most serious, life threatening infections ONLY. The side effects are not uncommon. They seem unrelated so people don't report the. Do not take this drug. Do not. Terrible drug. Please FDA, restrict the usage! You will save lives. M 28 5 days

1  Uncomplicated Diverticulitis I had to stop this awful drug because on day 3, I felt like my entire body was electrocuted and was taken to ER. The problem with Cipro, which is a fluoroquinolone, is that it (and all fluoroquinolones such as Avelox and Levaquin, not only cause horrendous side effects, but the side effects can be PERMANENT. I am 10 mos out from taking this dangerous drug that I've since learned is NOT recommended for uncomplicated diverticulitis by the American Gastroenterological Association. My side effects remain: extreme chronic fatigue (bedridden 10 mos now), unrelenting insomnia, painful neuropathy, damage to both Achilles tendons and to knees, require a walker in the house and a wheel chair if we leave the house, loss of cognition, loss of hair (I am a 61 year-old-women, and half my hair fell out after stopping this horrible medication), and damage to teeth, fingernails, and skin. The FDA has just issued it's 4th black box warning about fluoroquinolones, the most dangerous warning it provides. Unfortunately, few doctors or pharmacists are aware of these black box warnings. I was not warned. The FDA specifically states that no one over 60 should be prescribed this drug; I was 61 (and not told about this warning, either). Cipro and all fluoroquinolones should be reserved for life and death situations when there are NO other options available. In most cases, antibiotics that are far less dangerous can be taken, instead. It is too late for me; I am disabled after taking just 7 pills over the course of 3 1/2 days. It is not too late for you if you are reading this. INSIST ON AN ALTERNATIVE THAT IS NOT A FLUOROQUINOLONE! F 61 3 days

1  Diverticulitis Pain/Stiffness in joints (knees, ankles, fingers, wrists, toes), numbness/tingling in legs, muscle weakness and pain, fatigue, insomnia, severe anxiety, heart palpitations, tightness in chest radiating to my back, etc On 7/4/18 I had a sudden onset of left-side abdominal pain which was diagnosed as diverticulitis. Prior to that, I had no history of medical conditions, rarely went to the doctor, was completely asymptomatic and considered myself active/healthy. I was prescribed Cipro. On day one of taking it I noticed cramping in my left leg, but brushed it off. On day two, I awoke with stiffness in my wrist and could not move it and pain in my Achilles tendon. I thought I slept wrong. On day three, I had weird shocking sensations in my teeth and my stomach. In the morning I called my doctor and explained the symptoms. He told me he had never heard of these symptoms being associated with Cipro and told me to keep taking it. I didn't listen. Went to a clinic and switched to a different antibiotic. Since being prescribed Cipro, I have unusual symptoms that come and go in waves. Along with those mentioned, I also experience right upper abdominal pain, severe pain in my lower back that causes it to lock up, neck pain, burning sensations in my hamstrings, and more recently left and right flank pain. My hair is also falling out and my skin is excessively dry. All symptoms occur at random and the onset is not attributed to any physical activity. Something as simple as brushing my ankle on a bed sheet can cause shooting pain. F 32 7 days

1  UTI Fever half an hour after taking it. Strange feeling in chest. Shortly after I was done taking the cipro my back started feeling stiff and my left mid back muscles kept threatening to spasm. It’s been a month since I took the cipro. My back is still stiff and some pain and still has been feeling like it wants to cramp up. I don’t get sore. I have excellent stamina and strength. And I heal very quickly. Health nut. Now I’ve had to walk slow and have been in pain at work and laid up at home on the weekends. This stuff is evil. I don’t know when I’m going to be able to work and when I’m going to have to miss work. I am the only income in our house. I support a wife and young kids. Don’t take it. There are many other medications that can be administered in replacement that don’t have these kinds of side effects. I am currently researching about how I might cleanse this trash out of my system. I’m also looking at seeking compensation. M 45 5 days

1  Cellulitis Everything listed under warning! I have finally (after 3 weeks) started being able feel somewhat normal. I still have a constant metallic/bitter taste in my mouth, even water is a struggle to drink because it tastes so bad and I still have "pins and needles" in my feet, hands and back when I walk. Considering where I was and where I am now, I am SO happy. I just wish I was how I was before I took cipro... Just please use caution when using cipro. Know the possible side effects and at the FIRST sign stop use. My mistake was that I didn't listen to my own body (I knew better:( ) Horrible, nasty, evil, definitely should not be given out easily.  5  UTI Some achy muscles, drowsiness, some anxiety I was absolutely terrified to try CIPRO after reading all of these reviews. So much so that I called my primary physician to make sure she thought I should (I was prescribed this by a walk in clinic after my second UTI in two months), and also asked several of my family members and friends if they had taken it. I finally decided to take it after realizing that virtually every antibiotic I had been given for UTIs in the past had equally as terrifying reviews and those were processed fine by my body. I felt some lethargy, muscle aches, and some mind anxiety/depression over the three days I took Cipro. However, these symptoms could have all been do to PMS and caffeine withdrawal as well. None of them were severe in the slightest. I would say the most inconvenient part of this process was not being able to the ibuprofen for a slight headache I had that wouldn't go away (again, likely due to a lack of caffeine intake). Overall, I didn't have any symptoms that have scared me away from this antibiotic. I will probably avoid caffeine for a bit longer, but that is honestly only because coffee tends to give me a bit of anxiety in general and I don't want to risk making that worse. F 27 3 days

I am pretty much housebound Extremely toxic side effects that don't show up 4 days weeks or months... mine showed up about a month after I took the drug so it took me 2 years to realize it was Cipro that was causing all the problems F 67 3 days

1  Ear infection I took cipro in 2008 for an ear infection. After a few days I felt some old athletic tendon injuries oddly return. I also had discomfort on my temporal area (temporal tendon as it turns out) I thought nothing of it and continued. I had spasms in my temporal tendon and feet. Then 2 weeks after stopping the drug, in a matter of 12 hrs my entire body flushed into tendonitis. Arms, legs, everything was inflamed and not functional. I was unable to do simple tasks like wash dishes and soon I was unable to walk farther than across the room. It felt like a burning tearing sensation in my upper legs when walking. At 3 weeks I woke one morning to loud tinnitus. It diminished slightly over a week, but has been with me ever since. After three months being house bound, taking baths every day and losing my mind on the internet, the problems were mainly limited to my legs (and tinnitus and temporal area). I began to walk and within days of walking most of the burning sensation in my legs went away. F Now, 10 years out, I'd say I am 90-95%. I still have tightness and discomfort in my right leg/knee, but it doesnt slow me down. I still have tinnitus, which goes through periods of being more or less intense. At times my temporal tendon bothers me. Physically I do whatever I want (climb mountains, trek, paddle) without discomfort. It's hard to know what other lingering effects I have and if they will affect me as I age. But I feel lucky to have largely resolved. I don't know what did it but it took months and years (depending on the symptom). I took lots of baths, some magnesium. 10 years ago there was much less information about it. I had doctors who dismissed me, and others who knew what I was dealing with, but had no remedy. I think it was mostly just time. Our bodies want to heal and function normally. I see from other people on this site, time has not helped them. This reaction affects people with similar symptoms, but widely varying degrees of intensity and duration. When I was in the thick of it, I drove myself into terrible fear and sadness reading the horror stories on the web. I am posting this 10-year update to remind others that if this is happening to you, it is very possible that you will come out of it largely unscathed. Clearly some do not, but I will tell you that some...maybe most, do. Be gentle on yourself. Make baby steps toward reclaiming your joys and body. M 40 10 days

1  Slight tonsil infection NEVER had any problems with antibiotics. This drug almost killed me! After the first dose I felt tingling in my fingertips but didn't connect the dots. I took another dose before going to sleep and woke to a different world: my fingers hurt, my fingertips had small razor-like scratches, the skin was completely dry and my joints hurt. I stopped taking the drug, called the doctor but he brushed me off and advised to finish the package. Luckily, I didn't listen to him. On the second day, in the evening, my toes started to hurt and I hardly could walk. I called another doctor and she advised to go to the hospital. Late at night I waited for 4h but didn't see any doctor. I went to another GP the next day, insisted on a full blood test, and spoke to a doctor who had heard of Cipro before. She sent me to a neurology specialist who said that my nerves might have taken a hit and that there wouldn't be a treatment. I'm no 5 days down the line since stopping Cipro after only two tablets... and Should be banned! Forever! M 47 1 days
